To ask would you rather move house at 9 months pregnant or with a newborn?

We have to wait till September to move house (150 miles north) as we’ll pay a lower early repayment charge on our fixed rate mortgage and I’m due at the end of that month. But we also have to move before Jan 2021 (the deadline for DD’s school application) so we’ve either got to move when I’m 9 months pregnant or with 1/2 month old.
WWYD?

Pregnant. I did move with a newborn and a toddler and it was stressful.

FanSpamTastic · 04/03/2020 12:09

We completed on our house when dc3 was 3 days old - I would not recommend this!!!

We were in rented accommodation so did not actually move in until he was 6 weeks old - but even so was still exhausting. There was loads of work needed to the house which we were able to have done while it was still empty but trying to organise it while dealing with a 4 yr old, 3 yr old and a baby was hard.

I'm not sure it would have been any better at 9 months though - at that stage I would have wanted to nest and not be in the midst of packing boxes etc.

I'd probably go for moving with small baby rather than when 9 months pregnant.

MyDcAreMarvel · 04/03/2020 12:10

Definitely pregnant !

billy1966 · 04/03/2020 12:11

Pregnant, will loads of help.

lalaloopyhead · 04/03/2020 12:15

As long as you have some help, either should be fine. We were due to exchange on the day I had dd1 (OH had to bring documents to hospital for me to sign) and we ended up moving in when she was a week or so old.

I just went to MIL's though and drank tea while all the work was done in my absence...I had a CS so even had to be transported. Thinking about it, it was possibly easiest move I have ever done...not sure OH would have said the same though.

Whyareyouallcallingmemum · 04/03/2020 12:16

Pregnant for sure

LizzieMacQueen · 04/03/2020 12:21

I saw your thread yesterday and thought how difficult a choice you have.

But how close are those dates? I'd have to look at another (rental) option so that you've moved before you're too big.

No, in fact I think I'd take the finances out of the equation and accept the mortgage penalty clause. Such is life.

So sell and buy before you get to about 7.5 months - is what I would do.

OldEvilOwl · 04/03/2020 12:21

Pregnant! I moved house pregnant with a broken ankle, it was fine. Accept all offers of help

user1471592953 · 04/03/2020 12:26

I moved with an 8 week old. Don’t do it.

RoseGoldEagle · 04/03/2020 12:29

I moved with a 6 week old, it actually was the easiest move I ever did as everyone bent over backwards to help! But then unpacking and sorting the new house wasn’t fun. I’d go for moving heavily pregnant over moving with a newborn

lanthanum · 04/03/2020 12:33

We intended to move before birth, baby was prem, ended up moving with 3.5 week old who had only come out of hospital a few days earlier. It worked okay, but we weren't moving far so didn't have the journey to contend with.
If you're aiming for before the birth, bear in mind that you might need a contingency plan for early arrival.
Have you got help available at either end? That might make a difference, especially if there's timing differences on that.

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 04/03/2020 12:34

Pregnant. I've done it. It's hard. It's not fun and I'd generally rather not.

But I'd chose that over a newborn every day.

WTFsMyUserName · 04/03/2020 12:35

Pregnant definitely

Deux · 04/03/2020 12:35

Pregnant, definitely as you’ll have a chance to feel a little bit settled. I moved 6 weeks before my due date and that was fine.

I have a friend who was due to move house before her DD's due date but ended up with a prolonged stay in hospital. She left her flat pregnant, her DH had to move house and she returned to a new house with a new baby. It really affected her badly.

AwkwardAsAllGetout · 04/03/2020 12:37

Pregnant, no question. We did this last year, I was 36 weeks and in a bad way physically, serious back and hip problems and dh wasn’t around to help. I paid extra for the movers to pack and it’s the best money I’ve spent. Dd was late as it turns out, but she was (and remains) a nightmare, can’t be put down baby. If I’d moved when she was already here half of it would all still be packed as I’d simply not have had chance to do it.

Damntheman · 04/03/2020 12:40

I moved house at 36 weeks pregnant. I would 100% do that again rather than move with a newborn!

Robuns · 04/03/2020 12:41

Pregnant. Any day of the week!

Zombiemum1946 · 04/03/2020 12:42

I moved when 9 months and preferred it. The movers we used packed and unpacked everything so there was minimal to do. Our new furniture arrived 2 days before dc was born (a week late) . The delivery guts put it together where I wanted. Till the furniture arrived I had a single bed in the living room where I had my nap and the remote control. Good luck

Zombiemum1946 · 04/03/2020 12:43

Argh that should say delivery guys.

ThePolishWombat · 04/03/2020 12:44

Pregnant.
I’ve done 2 house moves (military postings) while pregnant and would rather do that than do it with a newborn 100%

Whichoneofyoudidthat · 04/03/2020 12:45

Pregnant. Then I’d pretend I was having mild contractions so I could get out of doing anything.

steppemum · 04/03/2020 12:47

pregnant

but I moved countries with an 8 week old - 3 times!
It is possible.

justtheonethen · 04/03/2020 12:47

I moved with a 6 week old. Was a nightmare. Definitely would choose to move pregnant if I could.

BrimfulofSasha · 04/03/2020 12:48

pregnant. I moved at 7 months pregnant, I could do organising and putting away, family helped with heavy lifting. Newborns turn the world upside-down. My sister had her 2nd 3 weeks ago, her eldest is 3 this month, the baby screams if she puts her down. No way could she be moving house now.

octoberfarm · 04/03/2020 12:48

I moved at 38 weeks pregnant and would choose that over moving with a newborn by a country mile. Didn't do any of the heavy lifting, but at least LO was contained Grin Congrats!
