To ask if you can work from home?

Given the spread of COVID 19, are you able to work from home and will you? Are your employers encouraging you to work from home or playing it down?

I am one of the lucky ones who already does work from home. Everyone at work works remotely. DP could also work from home if he had to, but he works mostly with physical computers so not actually sure how that would work!

threemilesupthreemilesdown · 03/03/2020 19:15

With a laptop and a mobile phone there's absolutely no aspect of my job that couldn't be done from home, but the workplace culture is very much against and it wouldn't be allowed in any circumstance.

Head office have issued clear guidelines on the circumstances in which they will pay staff who need to self-isolate.

Squirrelblanket · 03/03/2020 19:17

I work from home two days a week. I could do more and I would LOVE IT if they let me move to 100% home, even just for a short while.

RaininSummer · 03/03/2020 19:18

Only for about 1 day a week and that is only if I have seen students on the orher days as without them, I dont really have much to do.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 03/03/2020 19:19

I could set and mark work via the google classroom platform, so could provide some sort of learning opportunities for my class, but it's not the same as the majority of the day to day teaching - so no.

Ivebeentohellanditscalledikea · 03/03/2020 19:19

No I work in a school.

MedSchoolRat · 03/03/2020 19:20

I can but... with about 20% of efficiency compared to what I achieve in the office, with full fast access to physical and electronic files (auto-backed up), 2 big screens, colleagues to collaborate with, ISDN line for media interviews, fast email, fast data downloads, etc. I'm technically part of the emergency response to covid19 so would have to accept that folk like me end up with 20% reduction in what we manage to achieve.

I personally am definitely not that important, but imagine all the scientists like me scaled up to achieving 20-50% of what we could in actual office. Maybe fine if employer wants to buy me a complete desktop setup & fast broadland line and full server/journal access from home... - with IT support too, of course.

purpleme12 · 03/03/2020 19:21

No we can't work from home in our job :-(

joffreyscoffees · 03/03/2020 19:27

I work from home every Friday and adhoc days as and when I need them - for example, tomorrow I'll be WFH as I've been off with a sickness bug today and although the sickness has stopped, I don't feel great and I'm applying the '48-hour' rule so I don't infect a whole office.

I work for the NHS but not in a clinical role (obviously!).

Donkeykong20 · 03/03/2020 19:27

I'm in Ireland, we had our first confirmed case at the weekend.
On Monday, work were making sure everyone's work from home access is working and that we will be able to work from home if required. I'm glad they are preparing.

NoddyMcPintsAlot · 03/03/2020 19:28

I can and at times do WFH. I work for a large multinational which is currently hashing out a mass WFH strategy plan should they see the need for it however I suspect there will be no need given the very low infection rate in our area to date ( Republic of Ireland)

joffreyscoffees · 03/03/2020 19:29

We've also been told that we have to take our laptops home every night now and not leave them in lockers.

passthetequila · 03/03/2020 19:30

No ☹️ I'm a driving instructor. Dreading all the lesson cancellations and/or getting sick myself if this virus spreads. Read a news report this morning about one fifth of the workforce being off at the same time. If I don't teach I don't earn.

73Sunglasslover · 03/03/2020 19:39

I work for the NHS so no option of working from home.

Bluetrews25 · 03/03/2020 19:41

NHS frontline staff working with very new admissions via emergency dept. That would be a no, then!

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 03/03/2020 19:41

Im a SAHM so always wfh Wink my partner is self emoyed though and works in security so cant work from home and we wouldnt survive long with the loss of his wages so it is a worry

chuck7 · 03/03/2020 19:41

I can WFH in the unlikely scenario of a huge UK breakout.

Survey99 · 03/03/2020 19:46

One of our offices closed today as someone has been in close contact with someone (outside of work) who has tested positive. They are being tested now, no result yet but the office has been closed for a deep clean as a precaution. All office staff in that office have been told to WFH until further notice. We now have a UK travel ban (last week or was international only).

We have also been told today everyone must take their laptops home at night and have their contact details up to date incase they shut the office.

Crunchymum · 03/03/2020 19:49

Logistically I can work from home and occasionally do.

However if C.V gets so bad I have to WFH then I'd assume my kids will all be off school / out of childcare and there is no way I can WFH with 3 kids?

In general WFH is for occasional use. Although I know a few people have a WFH day written into their contracts.

I work in software / finance.

Neoflex · 03/03/2020 19:50

We received a company wide email saying that anyone with even a cold should not come into the office and should work from home.

Pppppickupapenguin · 03/03/2020 19:50

I'm front line NHS so will no doubt be there for the duration.

Darbs76 · 03/03/2020 19:52

Yes, we work at home already one day per week, but have been told today to find out who doesn’t have a laptop and get them one. If they refuse they might have to use AL if forced quarantine. I’m not sure they could do that but we will see. I think we would be ok with everyone working at home for short term. As we mainly work off emails etc. However depends if others also quarantined as we rely on systems and reports which are done manually

Heatherjayne1972 · 03/03/2020 19:52

I work in a dental practice
So no. I can’t work from home

MrsMigginsPie · 03/03/2020 19:53

I WFH 2 days a week anyway. As part of out contingency planning everyone’s been asked to take their laptops home with them every night (I do anyway) to make it easier to work from home quickly in case of changing government advice. I’ll be glad not to use the Tube (or packed trains)....but that’s the case with or without Covid!

mrbob · 03/03/2020 19:55

Nope. HCP. More likely that I would be moving into the hospital and sleeping on a floor for 2 weeks than isolating at home for 2 weeks
