To ask if you can work from home?

Given the spread of COVID 19, are you able to work from home and will you? Are your employers encouraging you to work from home or playing it down?

Yep. I wfh 4 days a week anyway so an extra day isn't going to make much difference.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 03/03/2020 17:10

I could. But I hate WFH. So I won't be unless it's absolutely necessary.

lastqueenofscotland · 03/03/2020 17:12

I could easily work from home but as a general rule the company I work for don’t like it.

lastqueenofscotland · 03/03/2020 17:12

I mean there are no barriers to me doing my role from home at all role wise. Our company is big on team spirit and that so they don’t like WFH

PontiacBandit · 03/03/2020 17:14

I could if needed to but I work in a very small office of 5 staff and not customer facing so very low chance of catching / passing anything on, none of us use public transport either. There's more risk for me to go to the supermarket.

LoveBeingAMum555 · 03/03/2020 17:14

I can work from home but prefer not to, but my adult son is living with us and he has cancer so I won't be taking any chances. A concern for us is that DH is self employed and can't do his job from home, and we can't afford to lose his wages for long.

Mia1415 · 03/03/2020 17:15

Yes, I can sometimes. I'm HR so I can do some stuff from home, but need to go in to see staff etc.

My main concern is that 90% of my workforce can't work from home (food manufacturing).

user1497207191 · 03/03/2020 17:22

I'm self employed, but have diabetes and respiratory problems already so I am spending a lot more time at home rather than going in the office and avoiding client meetings like the plague. There's a lot I can do at home, so only need to go into the office for printing/post opening etc. I think the Coronavirus may well be the shove I need to ditch the office completely and do everything from home and really cut down on meetings etc., most of which aren't even remotely necessary but clients seem to like them, so that's an area I'll have to work on.

motherrunner · 03/03/2020 17:27

Teacher here so nope, unless BJ creates a rule which means I’ll be expected to teach all my classes in my own home!

BookWitch · 03/03/2020 17:33

I teach online, so obviously yes, but seeing as I go a bit stir crazy and have to get out once a day to speak to someone "real", 14 days of self-isolation does worry me a bit (Though I know I am better off than others on this - ie still get paid, I'm used to being at home etc)

LGY1 · 03/03/2020 17:35

I can work from home and tend to only go in for meetings. That said all meetings can be conducted over Skype so we could all self isolate.
I’m in facilities management

PinkiOcelot · 03/03/2020 17:36

Unfortunately, no I can’t work from home. Wish I could though. Not just for Coronavirus, just in general.

PlugUgly1980 · 03/03/2020 17:36

Yes and I do work from home regularly. However the more users trying to access the network remotely, the greater strain and lack of stability.

WyfOfBathe · 03/03/2020 17:41

Not on my own initiative, as I'm a teacher.

DD's primary school closed for deep cleaning recently and they sent some vague work home (eg "read books"). I imagine if my secondary school closed we would be expected to send home slightly more detailed work than this!

TheMammothHunters · 03/03/2020 17:42

I can’t WFH because I teach at a University and work in general dental practice.
The University will close if there’s a risk to public health.
If DS school closes I won’t be in practice or University because I will have look after him.
I won’t get paid, but can manage without for a while, we can stop overpaying our mortgage.
DH works for Lloyds banking group and so far isn’t WFH but can and will as soon as the bank raise the risk level up a notch. I guess this will coincide with when the government move theirs up a notch.

CouldBeOuting · 03/03/2020 17:43

I can’t work from home. I work in school... there really is practically nothing I could do at home.

DH already works from home two days per week and could feasibly do a lot more from home if necessary. At the moment his employer (the government) is playing it down.

shinyredbus · 03/03/2020 17:44

I work from home when I want but I’m going I to the office

Beamur · 03/03/2020 17:44

I can.
I quite like going into work though. But if asked I can do most of my job from home. Big employer supportive of home working so unlikely to be a problem if it would be helpful for me to do so.

maddy68 · 03/03/2020 17:45

No I'm a teacher can't do that remotely (well not effectively anyway )

ActualHornist · 03/03/2020 17:53

I can and often do work remotely. I work out of a contact centre but not contact centre work, so I’m not tied to the systems there.

I’m awaiting the guidance which I was told would be published today or tomorrow.

NeedAUsernameGenerator · 03/03/2020 17:53

I work with people so no. A small amount of my job is admin which I could do from home but probably no point if I have to go in for everything else.

Lindy2 · 03/03/2020 17:58

I'm a childminder so I already work from my own home. Unfortunately working from home won't save me from the germs as the little darlings bring their germ in to me.

When I can get hold of some I think I might put an antibacterial dispenser at the door for the children to use when they come in. We're already doing lots of handwashing.

gwenneh · 03/03/2020 18:06

Yes; I've just brought up the issue today as some of the team are still flying to a conference in a few days against my advice. I can work from home, so can my team.

Jellykat · 03/03/2020 18:07

No, not in my main jobs in retail and 2 cleaning jobs..
I however also sew, supplying 2 outlets, so that is done at home, but do have to be delivered...

Am self employed, so have no sick / holiday pay if i am ill.

madcatladyforever · 03/03/2020 18:08

i can't look after sick people at home, I have to go into the hospital.
