To ask if you can work from home?

Given the spread of COVID 19, are you able to work from home and will you? Are your employers encouraging you to work from home or playing it down?

Scbchl · 03/03/2020 18:08

Yeah I work from home 80% of the time anyway.

BritWifeinUSA · 03/03/2020 18:09

I already do. I am full-time at home and have been for years.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 03/03/2020 18:12

I work in a factory so no. Office based staff have been told they can, we have been told that unless we have a dr's note saying we have to stay at home we will be subject to a disciplinary if we don't go in. We have been provided with hand gel though.

HRH2020 · 03/03/2020 18:15

I'm based in gp surgeries so no, although i doubt I'd get many referrals if everyone else was at home!

RedPanda2 · 03/03/2020 18:16

Yes i wfh in the morning and evenings, the thought of self isolating completely for 2 weeks is awful. I need interaction with peope!

FrenchyQ · 03/03/2020 18:20

I work in a lab so no I can't work from home (dont think id want to bring my job home anyway :-p)

DH works from home as standard

InconvenientPeg · 03/03/2020 18:22

DH and I both work from home. I am supposed to be going to the London office next week for a day, but will just take a view on whether I should go the night before, and take hand gel! I think where people can, they should be allowed/encouraged to. It would make public transport less risky for those that can't. My Italian teammate was saying today that she thought the virus had changed attitudes over there to working from home, as previously it's been very frowned upon.

iklboo · 03/03/2020 18:22

Yes. I work from home three days a week anyway. None of my job is paper based, no customers to speak to and colleagues can be contacted remotely or by Skype. I'd WFH permanently if they'd let me.

okiedokieme · 03/03/2020 18:24

If I dumped all the office pc onto a cloud storage site and diverted calls I can work from home mostly but as I work alone anyway what's the point

Undecided91 · 03/03/2020 18:24

I can do absolutely 100% of my job from home as I am using the same laptop (taking it home every night anyway) & using company mobile so its virtually no difference where I do it from - the office, home or North Pole!! But my boss is very against WFH and just "needs" someone being at the office all the time. Never mind that he works from home majority of the time! Time to change a job I guess....

Silvergreen · 03/03/2020 18:25

I work in finance in the NHS. It's possible that events will force me to work from home.

okiedokieme · 03/03/2020 18:26

@bengalcat

Surely you could set up on the kitchen tableGrin

Actually it's interesting that so many can't, and they are the people doing the important critical jobs often eg if I'm stuck at home, Ocado become an essential service!

Gogolego · 03/03/2020 18:28

Would love to see how my role could possibly be wfh. Aside from one small part which still involves being physically at work and answering emails.

Kirkman · 03/03/2020 18:32

Bit complicated for me.

Me and my team can definitely work from home. We do internal reporting for a large business.

The operational teams can work from home, technically, though it would be harder.

But then non of us have any work to do, if our engineers cant do their work. We would have just do work where the engineer can work alone, in the field and have no/minimal contact with the customer on site.

Gogolego · 03/03/2020 18:32

Technician in a school

Tumbleweed101 · 03/03/2020 18:36

The bulk of my job it isn’t possible to but there are bits I could do if it became necessary.

SueEllenMishke · 03/03/2020 18:38

Yes.i work at a university and we are being encouraged to have plans in place if we need to close. I'm an academic so WFH regularly anyway. Not sure how it will work for professional support staff though.

mindutopia · 03/03/2020 18:46

I already work from home 1, sometimes 2 days a week. So yes, it would be fine.

We are not currently being encouraged to do anything differently, but it would be up to my discretion, unless and until an organisation wide decision is made. At the moment, I’m taking it week by week. I work in a research setting with NHS patients. I plan to continue as normal this week and will decide next week what I do.

If I needed to work from home for a month or two, it could be arranged. We will also be paid for any time where we need to self isolate or for any other reason can’t come to work.

It’s a rapidly changing situation though.

Drogonssmile · 03/03/2020 18:53

I can't WFH although I'd love to have the option. DH can which is handy in a childcare crisis but not sure he would long term unless forced to.

stargirl1701 · 03/03/2020 18:59

No, as a teacher I cannot work from home.

I read in the press that the pupil teacher ratio may be relaxed if there are lots of teachers absent.

BillywigSting · 03/03/2020 18:59

I'm a hca so no. Bit tricky to do catheter care remotely Grin

Dp could do some of his job from home (in fact he does occasionally bring it home with him) but as he is in the chemical industry and needs to be in the lab and on plant quite a bit, he couldn't really.

I'm far more likely to catch corona than him though, there are only about 50 people employed in his place, quite a few of which could work from home. Some of the processes could be shut down too which would reduce numbers. Skeleton crew over Christmas is 20.

Kahlua4me · 03/03/2020 19:04

I run a business with dh and I work at home all the time.

Dh is at home 40-50% of the week and our employees are in customers houses/offices all the time so they can’t work at home. However if in lockdown or virus in our town I would have no hesitation in giving them the time off, paid that is.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 03/03/2020 19:08

Can and do, usually do 3 days at home and 2 in the office but could easily do 5 days at home instead I just like having the option to speak to people face to face.

TotesGodsWill · 03/03/2020 19:09

Can’t work from home currently but contingency plans are in place for it to be enabled to cover business critical functions if the office has to close.

Bargebill19 · 03/03/2020 19:12

Nope. I work in a care home. Not a chance to work from MY home.
