Hello there! Would you care about what people would think if you are wearing fakes? i am an occasional replica purchaser myself, although i do have some real things, but some accessories and clothes are hugely overpriced (i feel like it is super stupid to pay £400 pounds for a gucci tshirt). I don't feel like my friends are noticing this, but still it worries me sometimes as people tend to think a lot of things. Especially if i constantly am in the environment where everyone wears real. Would you personally care about what people think? Would you continue to buy fakes?

I personally would rather buy high street items that have paid tax and fair wages to people. Counterfeits are a part of the criminal economy and have been shown to use child labour/sweatshop labour. Plus they take away jobs from legit businesses.
I can tell some brands when they're fake, but others like LV are so copied I have no idea.

mnthrowaway202020 · 02/03/2020 14:05

@magicfarawaytrees go on then, please explain why someone would want to wear a replica?

doolally1 · 02/03/2020 14:05

I do think social media really does push designer goods which wasn't there so much when I was a teen, everyone shows off all their buys which probably makes some feel inadequate.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 02/03/2020 14:06

I buy my dc what I can afford. Some of it will be cheaper stuff (eg primark) and some will be high street (eg topman or h&m) and some lower level or sports brands (eg Hollister / Levi’s / Nike). Ds2’s dad buys bad quality fake designer T-shirts and honestly? It does make me cringe a bit. I don’t stop ds wearing them - it’s his choice - but I really don’t like the fakes. I think I’d find it odd for an adult.

bingbangbing · 02/03/2020 14:07

Designer gear in itself, is generally bollox.

So, you're effectively wearing fake bollox. What do you expect people to think of that?

If you're broke, get stuff from supermarkets, charity shops and Facebook market place etc

Fake bollox is even more bollox than real bollox.

So, it's all a load of utter bollox when you think about it

No, a stranger might not. But people who know you well, know your circumstances? To be fair, passers by aren’t particularly invested in what a complete stranger is wearing, they’ll hardly get up close and personal.
If your friends ask, though, do you lie?

ChainsawBear · 02/03/2020 14:08

Do you know who actually makes fakes? Children who have their legs broken so they can't run away. Vulnerable people who are quite literally held prisoner. It's a vile, dirty, criminal, dangerous supply chain, and all so someone can flash a "brand name" on the cheap.

jackparlabane · 02/03/2020 14:09

DH and I went to buy leather jackets in Turkey. Long happy afternoon negotiating with lots of mint tea, in German and bits of English and a Turkish phrasebook, with a dozen shopkeepers and families. We agreed a fair price for the sort of thing we wanted, so they were all desperate to come up with the most flattering coats.

It was only when we got home we noticed DH's jacket says 'Versace' and mine was another designer. I'm guessing they aren't, but they are good quality items.

DH was in Turkey again recently and bought me a handbag to my specifications. Turned out all the low quality ones were unbranded, and all well-made ones had some designer name on. Again I'm assuming fake, or maybe they are the 'real' thing that gets diverted from the authorised supply chain? No idea, but I got two nice bags.

fashionistatoast · 02/03/2020 14:09

Oh and also i once actually purchased a designer item (small prada bag) from the store and you know what? the quality was actually terrible! i was very careful with it, but still the leather scratches so easily. i heard a lot of stories like this, when people say that real deals are now terrible and fakes are made in better quality. i sometimes feel like the luxury houses are involved in a fake business as well (maybe i am wrong, but based on decreasing quality and raising prices i feel like it might be true)

doolally1 · 02/03/2020 14:11

Why do you want fakes though?

I do have some designer handbags but also have some good quality unbranded ones

Thurmanmurman · 02/03/2020 14:11

I don't really see the point in fake designer gear. Surely if you buy these brands it's for the quality and status that comes with the price tag. I'd rather just keep it real and go to Next, until I'm in a position to buy the real thing.

fashionistatoast · 02/03/2020 14:11

@ChainsawBear well there were a lot of news stories that actually a lot of real items are made at the same places with same conditions. and lets not forget how fast fashion is made...

OP posts:
EmeraldShamrock · 02/03/2020 14:12

I don't see the point of wearing a fake item. I aim to please myself I'd only be trying to fool myself which is pointless.
Mind you I don't have any designer stuff these days, I'm speaking from memory. The day's I use to spend a month's wage on a handbag, it was for show mainly.

Hoppinggreen · 02/03/2020 14:12

So a complete stranger walks past you and thinks/notices you are wearing designer goods? How would you know that?
They would hardly stop you and say “I see you are wearing genuine designer clothes, well done”
So why would this be a good thing?

Extracurricularfatigue · 02/03/2020 14:12

why would you, you can just buy the real thing like me

Not really. Most of the answers are from people who don’t buy any designer stuff at all because they don’t care.

Thisismytimetoshine · 02/03/2020 14:12

The fakes will not be better quality than high end branded stuff, op, that’s pure baloney.

shinyredbus · 02/03/2020 14:15

Look op if you can’t afford the real thing - it would probably be wise to say away from the replicas because it looks tacky. Sorry but it is. I will I do know if you were using a fake - they are easy to spot.

Ninkanink · 02/03/2020 14:16

Leather scratches..that’s just what leather is like! Some leathers are more durable than others. Saffiano, for example, is extremely scratch resistant, grainy leathers lend themselves better to scratches, marks and patina, whilst lamb leather is very soft and quite fragile. You don’t necessarily buy a designer handbag with an expectation that it won’t scratch because it was very expensive. You’re paying for a design language that fits your preferred aesthetic, good quality leather and usually better quality workmanship and yes, also some cachet and/or signalling of belonging to a particular ‘tribe’.

fashionistatoast · 02/03/2020 14:18

@Nikanink The bag which i bought was in Saffiano leather( and my has other prada bag also in Saffiano bought in different prada shop and it also scratched after 3 times

This feels like a weird long-winded advert for a fake designer goods website.

DropYourSword · 02/03/2020 14:19

You’re paying for a design language that fits your preferred aesthetic, good quality leather and usually better quality workmanship and yes, also some cachet and/or signalling of belonging to a particular ‘tribe’.

And with the fakes, all you’re getting is the signalling of belonging to a particular tribe.

fashionistatoast · 02/03/2020 14:20

@hammeringinmyhead lol its totally not. i am definitely not from a fake website, i just asked for opinion and thoughts (i suppose this is what forums were made for)

ChainsawBear · 02/03/2020 14:21

well there were a lot of news stories that actually a lot of real items are made at the same places with same conditions. and lets not forget how fast fashion is made...

That's absolute garbage. Luxury houses spend huge effort to try and clamp down on/prevent the sale of fakes. Why would they participate? The point of a fake is that it's sold cheaply. So if their actual product were being sold under the table as a "fake", they'd lose on every count - lost margins and badly diluted brand value. They would not for a second tolerate fakes being made alongside their real product - their whole business depends on it. They work together cross-industry in a constant effort to combat the criminal supply chain producing fakes.

The fast fashion supply chain is not always pretty, but it is legal, monitored, and subject to some degree of checks and balances, not least because it is monitored by the press and shareholders. The sale of fakes is from start to finish illegal and criminal, with high stakes, which leads to outright brutality and cruelty. "Well fast fashion is just as bad" is a thin self-serving fantasy.

Arthritica · 02/03/2020 14:21

OP, you've been given the many reasons buying counterfeit goods is a bad move and you continue to deflect, move the goalposts or engage in whataboutery.

You asked, and so far 95% have told you YABU.

whatareyoucooking · 02/03/2020 14:22

OP if love to see an example of this replica stuff
