Hello there! Would you care about what people would think if you are wearing fakes? i am an occasional replica purchaser myself, although i do have some real things, but some accessories and clothes are hugely overpriced (i feel like it is super stupid to pay £400 pounds for a gucci tshirt). I don't feel like my friends are noticing this, but still it worries me sometimes as people tend to think a lot of things. Especially if i constantly am in the environment where everyone wears real. Would you personally care about what people think? Would you continue to buy fakes?

My teenager and her mates wouldn’t touch fakes, it’s Social suicide

AlternativePerspective · 02/03/2020 13:18

don't you feel like the media (especially the bloggers and celebrities) kind of make us buy more clothes and bags and shoes in order to "fit in” fit in where? If not wearing designer brands and the like means I don’t fit in then clearly I don’t given I have no interest in such things.

And truth is that if people know more or less what your financial situation is and you appear in what on face value seems to be a branded t-shirt with branded shoes/handbag, then people will just assume it’s a fake anyway.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 02/03/2020 13:19

Replicas are an integral part of organised crime - do you want to fund terrorists?

HoffiCoffi13 · 02/03/2020 13:19

So do you just mean things like a t-shirt from Zara that has been designed in the style of a Gucci t-shirt, not something with fake logos? If so, surely that’s what the vast majority of people do?
I’ve never bought a ‘designer’ clothing item. All the clothes I buy are from the high street, and obviously the way the high street works is that it observes catwalk trends and replicates the styles that are in fashion. Is this what you mean?

Babyshine2020 · 02/03/2020 13:19

When I go on holiday to Turkey I'll often pick up some fakes, for example Nike trainers. The styles that I like in Nike have very high arches and they hurt my feet, whereas the fakes don't (probably shows quality but Oh well).

They look real, they're comfortable and they work out at about £10/£12 (my current pair I've been wearing for 13 months!).

It's all down to personal choice and I know people will jump on the fact I got fakes from turkey so the world is going to end, but theres thousands upon thousands of shops over there that all do fakes, their quality/appearance is good & im financially better for it so in my opinion it is what it is.

HoffiCoffi13 · 02/03/2020 13:22

If you mean actual ‘fakes’ then I just think it’s a bit odd, I guess.

Bluntness100 · 02/03/2020 13:23

I also find it tacky like you’re trying to pretend you have the real deal, but often clearly couldn’t afford it.

Just buy good clothing you can afford, not cheap knock off replicas.

fashionistatoast · 02/03/2020 13:23

@HoffiCoffi13 i mean more like chanel 255 bag which dies not have chanel logos etc or like alexander mcqueen trainers that don't say alexnader mcqueen. As for fast fashion, they all emulate the styles of luxury or high end fashion, but Primark is a whole different kind of story (and not the good one)

I like the odd designer thing but I would never ever by a fake! I’d massively judge sorry.

There are amazing, elegant clothes on the high street that look so much better than a knock off.

Justgorgeous · 02/03/2020 13:25

A fake is a fake and probably looks fake.

BarkandCheese · 02/03/2020 13:26

Ignore celebrities and bloggers and find your own style. The famous and photographed get sent things for free by the big designers in the hopes that they’ll wear them and get others to rush out and buy their stuff. I used to work with famous people and the bags and bags of freebies these already rich people got given were obscene. Stop buying into the scam, you don’t need all the latest stuff, this obsession with keeping up with influencers is bad for our mental health and terrible for the planet.

QueenofallIsee · 02/03/2020 13:26

Ok so buying a lookalike is different. I have 3 handbags that are ‘Stella inspired’ - I love the shape and design but wouldn’t pay over a £1000 for a Stella McCartney. These do not pretend to be designer, no pretend labels or hint of being a fake designer handbag. Just a similar shape. That’s different

DropYourSword · 02/03/2020 13:28

You’ve just reminded me of something that happened to me once.

I complimented a colleague at work once on her handbag. It was really cute and I’d noticed it a couple of times. She had the same version in two colours.
Came into my office one day to see the back on my desk with a post-it note saying “I’m coming home with you Drop“. Was a lovely gesture.

I really loved that handbag.
A woman came up to me in a shop once when I was carrying it and said very gleefully to me “I know it’s not real, you know” - pointing to it.

I...hadn’t thought it was anything other than a cute, cheap handbag. Not a fucking clue what she thought I thought it was even supposed to be a copy of!

Not sure why I’m sharing here. Maybe just to let you know that people spot “fakes” when it’s not even intended to BE a fake. Confused

fashionistatoast · 02/03/2020 13:28

@WickedlyPetite but what if it was like a very good copy that was hard to detect? Because i actually know there's a lot of people would buy AAA quality and not even authentication team could not see that it is fake

OP posts:
RestaurantoffBroadway · 02/03/2020 13:29

The media and the bloggers do want to make you do this. But they don't have your best interests at heart. You need to find a value system that supports your best interests and that of wider society if you want to be happy.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 02/03/2020 13:30

I wouldn't spend a fortune just to have something branded, absolute waste of money. I also wouldn't wear fakes, just tacky.

Extracurricularfatigue · 02/03/2020 13:31

Then it’s coming straight out of organised crime.

puds11 · 02/03/2020 13:32

I generally find obvious branding tacky. I’ll wear branded gym clothing as it’s fit for purpose but other than that I don’t have anything.

I find fakes/replicas whatever, to be tacky. I’d rather not have it at all than have a fake.

fashionistatoast · 02/03/2020 13:33

@Iminaglasscaseofemotion what would you wear then (if i may ask) because i feel like fast fashion industry itself is an orginized crime and tbh we don't know whats going on behind the closed doors

OP posts:
Ginfilledcats · 02/03/2020 13:35

I don't understand why people want to pay obscene amounts for "designer stuff". I understand even less why people feel the need to buy fakes. And I saw that as a 30 year old fashion conscious woman who could probably afford the odd item.
Certainly feel no pressure from social media or influencers to have x item by x brand.

Extracurricularfatigue · 02/03/2020 13:37

Just buy and wear clothes you feel and look good in. And wear them as long as they last. Pay as much as you can afford for as high quality as you can if that means the clothes are more durable.

My understanding is that even mass market designer is produced in less than ideal conditions, so minimise your consumption whatever you buy.

Noconceptofnormal · 02/03/2020 13:37

It depends, the high street copies high fashion brands which is why magazines like Heat always have those articles with what's on the catwalk then a similar version from h&m or whatever. That's fine, as it's not trying to pretend to be that brand.

But if you're wearing a t shirt that says gucci on it then I think that's a bit sad, sorry. It reminds me of when you see in poor African countries young men with t shirts that say gucci, versace etc on them, which are obviously fakes.

Extracurricularfatigue · 02/03/2020 13:38

Or even better buy second hand. Apart from anything else you can get much more expensive stuff that way than buying new.

Butchyrestingface · 02/03/2020 13:42

No.

I’ve vaporised quarter of a million brain cells reading this thread.

mnthrowaway202020 · 02/03/2020 13:45

OP, you come across as insecure. Maybe you should deactivate insta for a bit?

Instagram isn’t real life. Influencers buy trendy designer items because it’s a worthwhile expenditure for them (fashion influencers need to stay on top of trends and have varied content etc to stay relevant.) In turn it gets them more engagement and therefore more money as social media is their job - the bag (etc) pays for itself. You shouldn’t be trying to “fit in” with them.

Do you not have many actual friends? Do your friends make you feel inadequate about your lack of designer items? If so, you need better friends instead of counterfeit clothes/accessories.
