would you care what people think about you wearing fakes?

Hello there! Would you care about what people would think if you are wearing fakes? i am an occasional replica purchaser myself, although i do have some real things, but some accessories and clothes are hugely overpriced (i feel like it is super stupid to pay £400 pounds for a gucci tshirt). I don't feel like my friends are noticing this, but still it worries me sometimes as people tend to think a lot of things. Especially if i constantly am in the environment where everyone wears real. Would you personally care about what people think? Would you continue to buy fakes?

Blubelle7 · 03/03/2020 02:07

I love brand names. When my budget was tighter, although I lusted after certain items I preferred to spend what I had on unknown or typical high street brands than buy "replicas"

FrockFrockFrockityFrock · 03/03/2020 02:09

yeah i agree with that, but don't you feel like the media (especially the bloggers and celebrities) kind of make us buy more clothes and bags and shoes in order to "fit in"

I am totally comfortable within myself that I do not need to read such blogs and therefore do not get led astray by bloggers and celebrities. Plus they get freebies to promote their blog/themselves/get followers. I am just not at all into that scene. They're brainwashing you into following a herd. It's silly. I hope one day you see it for what it is.

==Posts I like==

Believe me, if you're walking around with replica Chanel bags and Alexander McQueen sneakers without the logo on them nobody, I said NOBODY, is considering even for a moment that any of what you're wearing is real.

and this:

You can spot a fake a mile off. The nearest shopping centre to me is in the middle of a town that is not at all affluent. Virtually all of the young women I see there have very obviously fake LV Neverfull bags over their shoulders, they’re not fooling anybody.

as well as this:

If you don’t earn a huge salary and you wear fakes... everyone will know that you couldn’t afford the real deal.

I think all in all there are other things in life to focus on, aim for, love, get happy about. I tend to not keep up with the Joneses, as it is a game I find to be unfulfilling, expensive, unrewarding, boring, and plain dumb.

showmewhatyougot · 03/03/2020 07:16

YABU.

The majority agree, and your still trying to make excuses. I think fake is so tacky, and don't understand why people feel the need to buy it.

Anyone who has the real items will 100% know it's fake. Only people with fakes say "it's such a good copy even the authenticity team can't detect" because that's how the item was sold to them. Anyone with any experience with the real items and half their brain cells items will be able to see the difference in quality. A £30 plastic belt from China will never look the same as a £500 one made in Italy. No matter what you tell yourself .

I know this is going to sound sanctimonious but what a strange, sad society where this is an issue, where brands matter more than functionality.
End stage capitalism, our society and planet both fucked.

Ethelfleda · 03/03/2020 08:07

I couldn’t give a shiny shit what anybody else wears to be honest. I personally think being plastered in branding like you’re a walking advertisement for a ‘high end’ label is a strange thing to do but... horses for courses and all that.

Ethelfleda · 03/03/2020 08:07

Hear, hear!
What a vacuous society we live in.

MimiLaRue · 03/03/2020 08:11

I dont "care" about it for others but I'd never do it. Fakes always look cheap and tacky no matter how good. You can always, always tell. The stitching always looks rough, the logo looks wrong, and most importantly, a good quality bag will last for years. Fake bags will fall to bits in a month or so. Its just not worth it- i'd rather save up and buy a better quality

Ethelfleda · 03/03/2020 08:15

By the way, OP - I wouldn’t have a clue whether someone was wearing ‘real’ or ‘fake’
I would question the ethics behind how you purchase clothes - if you have the means to do so... but other than that, where whatever the hell you want!

PineappleDanish · 03/03/2020 08:15

Also a lot of high end designer brands don't have a logo at all. Visible logos are so tacky.

An expensive designer item is usually sewn beautifully, with high quality fabrics. Buy a sweatshirt with Gucci, Chanel or whatever emblazoned over the front and it's quite obviously a cheap fake from a European market stall.

Ethelfleda · 03/03/2020 08:17

Sorry to keep posting but I suspect that one of the reasons people are so pissed off about you wearing ‘fakes’ will be that they’ve paid out hundreds or thousands of pounds to prove to their peers how much money they have, and don’t take kindly to someone cutting corners. After all, ‘this mainly a display of wealth, is it not?

I hope the emperor enjoys his new clothes...

PineappleDanish · 03/03/2020 08:22

The emperor is free to spend his money in whatever way he chooses. Personally i'm not a designer fan, but can appreciate that the quality control and the fabrics used are much better than most high street.

Trying to get the designer look but by choosing fake goods which are made with cheap materials and shoddy processes is never going to work.

Louise91417 · 03/03/2020 08:43

I think if i was in a social circle where people around me were judging me on what i was wearing id be removing myself from that circleHmm really life is too short..wear what you want and sod the snobs of this world..

Peapod29 · 03/03/2020 09:23

‘An expensive designer item is usually sewn beautifully, with high quality fabrics’

VERY high end, yes. But those won’t be the items mass market fakers can produce, it’s the ready to wear stuff like t shirts. Having worked with lots of designer brands in my old job I can confirm that a lot of the ‘ready to wear’ they produce is often only slightly better quality than many high street items. (I would exclude bags and shoes from this as you can easily tell if these items are well made or going to fall apart ). If people don’t want to pay 100x more for an item that is definitely not vastly better quality and certainly not more ethically produced in most cases I wouldn’t judge them to harshly. OP, wear what makes you happy and feel good. Everyone should really be moving towards buying less and wearing more of what they already have. You don’t need to change your whole style every season, so maybe it would be better to invest in some truly great quality classic pieces from the labels you love rather than buying fakes several x per year.

Bluntness100 · 03/03/2020 09:55

To be fair to lottie, there are some excellent replicas out there where you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference between that and the real deal.

However on saying that, that’s not the kind of stuff the op is purchasing, based on the link she posted.

Hannah9176 · 03/03/2020 10:27

Haven't RTFT but people who are invested in fashion will spot a fake easy. Initiation styles from top shop etc are different. I'd rather have a plain bag than a fake designer. Another thing is if you had a noticeably fake say Gucci bag but other genuine designer items, I would then doubt that any your stuff is actually 'real', so one fake designer item would devalue all of your genuine items.

I didn’t notice the link..... what page is it on?

myusernamewastakenbyme · 03/03/2020 11:00

I go out of my way to buy clothes and bags with no logos or brand names splashed all over them...I hate obvious branding....its tacky.

PerfidiousAlbion · 03/03/2020 11:02

Anyone who is familiar with high-end goods or who works in fashion will be able to tell you're wearing a knock-off. You can spot quality at a thousand paces if you know what to look for and likewise, low quality goods stand out, especially when placed next to high quality items. It's jarring.

Also, people will know your spending power from your background, job, house, car (if you have one) and other markers so it's pointless to pretend you're better off than you are.

I think you'd be better going for mid-range items that are more low key but well made and timeless. Also, try second hand shops and websites as a lot specialise in designer goods. Spend your money on things that last, like bags, shoes and coats. If you have high quality basics, you can then keep your wardrobe up to date by buying this seasons dress from Zara.

Try not to get caught up in the type of thinking that says your clothes and accessories determine your worth as a person.

Do not agree. Material status - what something cost, how rare it is, where its from - has always been important to humans, right from the first archaeological evidence we have of personal posessions.
They collected their treasures, wore them, were buried with them - pre-history is littered with it.
Trade routes opened up because of it, the world was opened up and discovered because of it.
Pre capitalism, of course it was mainly the rulers and those in great power. With our 'egalitarian' ideals, of course it opens up to everyone.
And if you can fake the goods, that is a natural extension particular when it's so simple as putting a name on an object.
It's not new. Its human.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 03/03/2020 11:36

I only wear designer clothes. They are all designed by George Grin

firesong · 03/03/2020 11:37

Don't like fakes or "proper" designer, not my style.

But I don't think you should worry what people think about your clothing. If it makes you uncomfortable, don't wear it

CandiceSucksCandy · 03/03/2020 12:18

sweeneytoddsrazor
I think you'll find that's Sergio Georgini
I have a few key pieces from Primarni myself.

YABU
Purely for the ethics of it. Yes, high street shops clothes are generally produced in sweat shops. But designer fakes are produced in conditions far worse and you are funding crime and slave labour.

Itsmybirthday19 · 03/03/2020 12:47

I'm laughing because I'm the dick who actually did spend £400 on that Gucci t-shirt (well it was a few years ago so it was £320 back then I think, but you know what I mean).

But, you know what, I was able to afford it (had just got my bonus) and I liked it. I still like it now, but it's a bit passe and I mostly wear it in bed or round the house these days.

Let other people enjoy things, I say. But don't buy fakes because, as mentioned, the supply chain isn't pretty.

As for cheap 'inspired by' handbags, I wouldn't, just because they generally look a bit plasticky, which undermines anything gained from the design element. Save up for the real deal or buy one of the many, lovely bags out there made by independent designers. The big brands don't have a monopoly on talent.

Eh, you’d have to scroll back yourself there, I’m not going to do it for you. 😂
