to wonder why I can’t find a cheapo squash drink that tastes as good as Robinson’s?

DH and I are trying to cut back on our food bill, and something that consistently comes up as a silly cost is the amount of orange squash we all drink (and yes, I know it’s not good for us). I don’t drink any alcohol or fizzy drinks so I rely on enjoying some nice tasting squash, but none of the cheaper ones we’ve tried taste good. Some of them taste really strange and a couple have given me headaches. AIBU to think that whilst most supermarket own brand products are cheap AND delicious, they are massively failing in the orange squash department? Why do they taste so shit?

I have no idea op but I completely agree.

Dp drinks asdas own blackcurrant squash and it's foul.

Ribena, vimto or Robinsons all the way here.

MrEzraGoldberg · 01/03/2020 22:26

I agree. Have tried loads of cheaper ones, they're all horrid. And I only have the double strength Robinson.s one as that's the only one I like!

Clevs · 01/03/2020 22:29

They all taste so shit because they've removed the sugar from them all!

Ruralretreating · 01/03/2020 22:30

We swapped from Robinson’s to Tesco High Juice - much prefer it!

Lunafortheloveogod · 01/03/2020 22:31

The only cheap one I’m ok with is Tesco’s double strength orange n mango? The rest taste rotten.

If ribena was cheaper I don’t think I’d touch anything else.

SuddenArborealStop · 01/03/2020 22:32

All squash not just orange... Miwadi is OK too but no supermarket brand comes close

RoseMartha · 01/03/2020 22:34

I buy tesco's. Either the orange and pineapple type one or blackcurrant or lemon or orange. Not keen on their other flavours.

WTF12345 · 01/03/2020 22:36

Aldi fruit and barley. 👌. X

Anthilda · 01/03/2020 22:37

We like the Aldi ones in our house, I think they're the barley ones.

TheQueef · 01/03/2020 22:38

Aldi is nice.
Not summer fruits though I think that's petrol.

copperoliver · 01/03/2020 22:39

Morrisons own is nice. Haven't tried them all but ones I've tried are good. X

Bombaybunty · 01/03/2020 22:43

Tesco's pink grapefruit high juice is nice.

chockaholic72 · 01/03/2020 22:43

I don’t like tea or coffee and only do fizzy stuff as a treat so it’s squash or water my entire life for me. I drink Vimeo or own brand high juice - Lidl’s high juice is miles cheaper than the Sainsbury’s/Tesco/Asda versions and doesn’t taste any different.

BoldRoo · 01/03/2020 22:49

Oh god, I love Ribena! So expensive though.

I’ve tried a few different high juices but always find them a bit sharp and tangy compared to Robinson’s. But the bog standard squashes (especially the double strength ones) always taste like a bottle full of chemicals to me. I’ll give the Aldi barley ones a go, they sound promising!

Tescos is OK- not the orange in particular but some of the range is fine.

Coulddowithanap · 01/03/2020 22:52

Tesco squash used to be nice, till they stopped selling the one with the added sugar.

Pineappletree33 · 01/03/2020 22:54

Agree.
Well, I used to love Robinson’s until they changed the recipe a few years back. I was devastated. I still can’t find anything to replace it. I’ve tried most squashes out there.

BoldRoo · 01/03/2020 22:54

For anyone who doesn’t care about cost, Rocky’s squashes are really nice. But they’re way more expensive than Robinson’s, and I think that’s too expensive, so they have no place on this thread really!

DH and I had this conversation only yesterday. We go through a double strength bottle of Robinson's summer fruits every 7-10 days but there is genuinely no decent alternative.

BertieBotts · 01/03/2020 22:55

Squash is much much cheaper than anything else you'd drink apart from plain water of course.

We can't get squash where we live (not UK) and we use syrups that they sell for soda stream users instead. Don't know if those would work out cheaper? Probably not, but worth a suggestion. Also grenadine syrup in the cocktail ingredients section is worth a try as a squash! I always get that when we go to the French supermarket!

Vellichor · 01/03/2020 22:56

I really like Tesco or Asda’s own lemon diluting juice, more so than Robinson’s lemon.

anon2020202020 · 01/03/2020 23:04

Asda orange and pineapple double strength tastes the exact same as Robinson's.

The summer fruits one is lovely too.

RB68 · 01/03/2020 23:04

The nicest orange sugar free I have found is Sainsburys double concentrate - I like quite a few of their flavours currently on apple

BubblyBarbara · 01/03/2020 23:18

I drink Rocks and that tastes fine

LtJudyHopps · 01/03/2020 23:35

Morrison’s is crap. Tesco double concentrate orange is the winner for me. But then I can’t stand Robinson’s so it may not be for you!
