to wonder why I can’t find a cheapo squash drink that tastes as good as Robinson’s?

DH and I are trying to cut back on our food bill, and something that consistently comes up as a silly cost is the amount of orange squash we all drink (and yes, I know it’s not good for us). I don’t drink any alcohol or fizzy drinks so I rely on enjoying some nice tasting squash, but none of the cheaper ones we’ve tried taste good. Some of them taste really strange and a couple have given me headaches. AIBU to think that whilst most supermarket own brand products are cheap AND delicious, they are massively failing in the orange squash department? Why do they taste so shit?

Morrisons cheapest apple and blackcurrant, it's only about 38p and so much nicer than Robinson's.

CasperGutman · 02/03/2020 07:01

Obviously "posh" squashes like Rock or Bottlegreen and a different matter, but for basic double concentrate squash' in big standard flavours like orange/apple and blackcurrant/summer fruits I don't think there's much to choose between Robinson's and the supermarket own labels. Tesco, Aldi and Asda at least are all on a level for me.

I can believe you can taste the difference between them, a d it would be reasonable to say you preferred any one of them over another, but I think that saying Robinson's is "nicer" or "better" is confusing familiarity with quality. On that basis, YABU.

My DP will only drink the squash from the Cooperative. It does taste slightly less synthetic although my most recent bottle has a chemicals aftertaste, I hope they didn't change the recipe.

Deliqueen · 02/03/2020 07:07

We drink actual pure fruit juice diluted with sparkling or still water as I can't bear sweeteners. My kids have never had squash at home. They are not keen on it either. They only drink water, milk or the diluted juice. Much better health wise than sweeteners.

Can’t help with your actual question OP, but blimey, how judgey do you need to get Barbara?

A bottle of squash won’t last a family long if four people are having 3-4 cups a day. So two days seems reasonable hence OP’s question. And when is squash a treat? It’s a perfectly acceptable source of fluid.

Beautiful3 · 02/03/2020 07:29

Would you ever give it up in the week for water and drink it at the weekends?

ArtemisOfOrtygia · 02/03/2020 07:46

Just buy regular sparkling water and add orange concentrate to it.

Franticbutterfly · 02/03/2020 07:50

I like Tescos double concentrates.

Cinderemma · 02/03/2020 07:55

I can't find a nice cheap dilute juice either.
We go through a LOT of Vimto and I love this cordial that is raspberry and lemon (can't remember the brand) but it's like £2.50 a bottle and it doesn't last long.

ACautionaryTale · 02/03/2020 08:05

Sainsbury orange lemon and pineapple here.

Only one I’ll touch. And I drink litres of the stuff

BoldRoo · 02/03/2020 09:18

If you're drinking a bottle of squash in 2 days you need to cut down, that's insane

I’m not personally drinking an entire bottle that quickly, the whole family are (plus I WFH so I’m here all day and we have quite a few family members and visitors popping in and out regularly so they often have a glass or two!). We’re not massively into hot drinks so it’s the main thing that everyone drinks here. I’ve tried switching to just water but end up dehydrated because I hate it.

Thanks for all the suggestions though, I’ll give some of them a try!

Don’t think I can dilute down much more, I already do half measures of the recommended amount! I think that’s why I like Robinson’s so much, it tastes fairly weak anyway. Might give making my own a go though.

The 2 litre Robinson’s Double Strength ones are half price (£1.50) at the moment.

Why not buy like a hundred bottles if they don’t expire too quickly?

annamie · 02/03/2020 09:30

In Tesco

Our house is quite small and we struggle for storage as it is. No garage or anything and every cupboard is full!

Waitrose Hi Juice no added sugar is much the nicest imo
Also Robinson's Lemon Barley , Rose's Lime Juice

rumandbiscuits · 02/03/2020 10:00

Aldi Apple and black current one is lovely I actually prefer it to Robinson's Grin

AlanRickmanFanClub · 02/03/2020 10:03

Waitrose juice squash contains sugar, not sweeteners, there are a few flavours and costs £1.50. They also do a lemonade with sugar instead of sweeteners.

cloudydaysinfebruary · 02/03/2020 10:05

If you haven't tried waitrose essential might be worth a try, they're double strength and taste good as far as I can tell.
(Although I'm not a squash drinker, just taste it to make sure I haven't made it too strong for dc!)

BertieBotts · 02/03/2020 11:03

Honestly I wouldn't feel guilty about drinking squash! It's so so cheap when you compare it to other things you could be drinking.

LtJudyHopps · 02/03/2020 11:07

I was like that, I hate drinking water out of a glass. I’ve bought myself one of those big refillable bottles and I drink it constantly!

MerryDeath · 02/03/2020 11:20

if you drink water and just keep drinking it and don't go anywhere near any of that shit you will get used to it and come to love it and even crave it

SistemaAddict · 02/03/2020 11:38

It's all pretty rank these days but I do like the Belvoir raspberry one. I used to drink vimto all the time and we often had own brand squash too but I've weaned us all off them and onto water. I can't stand the sweeteners and not many brands don't use them.

x2boys · 02/03/2020 11:45

I don't drink tea and coffee at all I find squash very hit and miss ,I don't mind aldi,s high juice ,I drink sparkling flavoured water ,I always have a bottle on the go .
