to wonder why I can’t find a cheapo squash drink that tastes as good as Robinson’s?

DH and I are trying to cut back on our food bill, and something that consistently comes up as a silly cost is the amount of orange squash we all drink (and yes, I know it’s not good for us). I don’t drink any alcohol or fizzy drinks so I rely on enjoying some nice tasting squash, but none of the cheaper ones we’ve tried taste good. Some of them taste really strange and a couple have given me headaches. AIBU to think that whilst most supermarket own brand products are cheap AND delicious, they are massively failing in the orange squash department? Why do they taste so shit?

I get the 'Jucee' 3L bottles from Ocado for £2. Kids both the Orange and the Apple & Blackcurrant. I think Tesco sell it as well.

Asda orange and pineapple! Love the stuff.

I bought some of the Aldi one recently, it was orange barley and I bought it in a moment of nostalgia for my childhood and my grandparents house where we always had Robinson's Barley water. It was nothing like my memories! And I didn't like it.

The best one I've found is in M&S and it Scottish Raspberry and we dilute it with sparkling water - it's really lovely but expensive for a tiny bottle so it's a treat!

We mainly drink sparkling water and add a slice of lemon / lime to it.

Weirdly, I hate Robinson's squash as it's too strong for me! I like Sainsburys sugar free squash.

stayathomer · 02/03/2020 12:30

There must be something wrong with our taste buds here. We all hate all the branded stuff and love the aldi and Tesco versions more!!!

itsabitofamess · 02/03/2020 14:26

I only buy fruit and barley. Everything else tastes like crap.

FruityWidow · 02/03/2020 15:16

I don't understand the point of squash. Why wouldn't you just buy a carton of actual juice and dilute it down with water?

stayathomer · 02/03/2020 16:11

Fruitywidow I'd say itd taste very different!

bobstersmum · 02/03/2020 16:32

Fruit and barley ones from absolutely anywhere are lovely. Cheap too.

Nowayorhighway · 02/03/2020 16:38

We like Aldi’s fruit and barley.

piefacedClique · 02/03/2020 16:40

I only used to drink Robinson’s and for the same reasons as you swapped to Aldi. We prefer it now and the kids won’t drink Robinson’s anymore

millymoo1202 · 02/03/2020 16:44

Have you tried home bargains or farm foods as I got huge Robinson’s bottles on offer 2 for maybe £2, can’t remember exact amount but much cheaper than Tesco

annamie · 04/03/2020 12:59

I can’t stand juice anymore, ever since I heard orange juice is boiled in huge vats and then cooled.

I’m too lazy to squeeze oranges for juice though.

annamie · 04/03/2020 13:04

‘Most commercial orange juice is so heavily processed that it would be undrinkable if not for the addition of something called flavor packs. This is the latest technological innovation in the industry’s perpetual quest to mimic the simplicity of fresh juice. Oils and essences are extracted from the oranges and then sold to a flavor manufacturer who concocts a carefully composed flavor pack customized to the company’s flavor specifications. The juice, which has been patiently sitting in storage sometimes for more than a year, is then pumped with these packs to restore its aroma and taste, which by this point have been thoroughly annihilated. You’re welcome.’

Tesco High Juice is how I remember Ribena tasting before they messed around with it.
