'Disturbing' film of child being involved in drag queen performance

Not sure of context but doesn't seem right to have a child being surrounded by adults cheering on a drag artist with arse handing out crawling on all fours towards a scared/overwhelmed looking child.

I think it speaks of a culture where parents are so afraid of not looking open minded that they don't consider the child's feelings.

Yanbu = yes it appears like bad parenting choices
Yabu = it's fine, I'd be happy if this was my child

The look of discomfort on little girls face says it all..fkn disgraceful..this is a sexualised performance directed to a child..and in todays society..object and your homophobic! How anyone can justify this is beyond me! And the jeering adults..they should all be put on a register and never allowed near children againAngry

faracrossthepond · 01/03/2020 10:07

Utterly grim. The child looks uncomfortable and perplexed. What kind of twat of a parent does this to their YOUNG child?

YANBU.

Iggypoppie · 01/03/2020 10:07

For the avoidance of doubt I would also object if the dancer was:

A) beyonce
B) a priest
C) mr tumble

It's not homophobic to be disgusted by it either.

Just like with race and gender, people pull this bullshit card out, to try and shut you down and win the argument.

Iggypoppie · 01/03/2020 10:09

@Wallowinginfilth that's why my AIBU is directed at the parents

Drag Queen or not, adults crawling about with their private bits out towards children?

I'd have been very upset and uncomfortable with this at her age too.

Louise91417 · 01/03/2020 10:12

I really would love to hear the "yabu"s argument to justify this! WtafAngry

FamilyOfAliens · 01/03/2020 10:14

That said, the drag queen does come across as kind and gentle as she approaches the child at the end.

If I took a child’s face in my hands like that without their consent, I would expect my head teacher to be having a word with me about inappropriate touching.

LemonGingerCakes · 01/03/2020 10:16

You realise that you’re in danger of being branded a TERF. And don’t go misgendering —him— her.

People have been warning of stuff like this for ages (but it would never happen).

People are so scared of not being woke enough.

It’s very worrying.

DuLANGMondeFOREVER · 01/03/2020 10:17

The way they’ve sat her down like that makes it seem like she’s the Hen or Stag watching a stripper.

It’s clearly inappropriate and would be whatever the sex or sexuality of the performer.

Have her parents have been sniffing glue?

I think I might vomit.

We've had warnings about this TIK TOK app at my DCs school and how parents should be aware it's not suitable for primary aged kids. There's a lot of disturbing stuff on there apparently.

TheVanguardSix · 01/03/2020 10:20

I understand completely. And you are absolutely right. I worked with children in a special school myself and I get the protocols. I'm not saying the guy's reasonable, but it just seems that he may have had a mild moment of awareness (given the poor child's expression) that this was way too much. I think he made an effort- even if it wasn't right- to soothe the child... I don't know. It's all fucked up, isn't it? It's sort of a "Let me undo the trauma I've just inflicted on you by gently stroking your face." I think he was attempting to say, "It's ok. I'm a nice person." But at the end of the day, that poor child should never have been there.

AutumnRose1 · 01/03/2020 10:21

“ The way they’ve sat her down like that makes it seem like she’s the Hen or Stag watching a stripper.”

Also makes me think/hope it’s fake.

TheVanguardSix · 01/03/2020 10:23

Sorry Iggie I am not trying to defend the guy wholly. But shit, it's really messed up and I guess I was trying to see some nice angle to a very dark situation. I think the guy was making a weird effort but yeah, it is creepy and dark and in no way, shape,or form am I saying that there is an ok angle to this really, really twisted situation. I'll keep on pounding the drum: the child should never have been there. And that is on the parents, entirely! I certainly am not going to start a bunfight over this. I'm on your side here, believe me.

SarahTancredi · 01/03/2020 10:24

Theres already a thread about this in feminism chat. But good idea to put it in aibu too, the powers that be prefer us to all be in some hidden dark corne.

This is grooming in plain sight. If it was a woman stripper dressed in the same outfit dancing about there would be outrage .

If anyone needs proof that if you add lgbt/queer for things you can get away with anything then here you go. Even though this is not representative of the majority if people who are equally outraged at what is being sneaked in, in their name.

Drag queens are adult entertainment. These parents are ridiculous and abusive . That poor girl

Wallowinginfilth · 01/03/2020 10:25

Iggypoppie

Is that why your linking to a very right-wing 'news' site? Is that why you are agreeing with posters who say the performer was in knickers? Is that why posters on this thread aee talking about the woke police? Is that why you sai this:

I think I might vomit.

I see the argument you are making at a surface level, and I think you have a point. But I also see dog whistles which make me deeply uncomfortable.

TheVanguardSix · 01/03/2020 10:26

I'd have to be sick if I saw Aunt Polly twerk.

BovaryX · 01/03/2020 10:27

It is quite incredible that a little girl is being subjected to this. How much kool aid is required to think this is okay?

So very true. See also Drag Queen Story Times...

The event is billed as ‘Family friendly’

This might be breaking news to you, but this bankrupt, manipulative tactic isn't working. Anymore.

Iggypoppie · 01/03/2020 10:29

@TheVanguardSix no probs at all, you've articulated the nuances very well. It's obviously not the most overtly sexualised performance that the drag queen could have done and they have clearly toned it down a bit.

However it's still clear to me that:

  • the child is seated akin to someone getting a lap dance
  • the adults around don't care about the child
  • the parents think they are being open minded but are just being cruel, dumb and irresponsible

koshkatt · 01/03/2020 10:29

Dog whistles? Calling out inapporpriate sexualised behaviour of a grown man towards a little girl when we see it is now a dog whistle? Ok then...Hmm
