People using lifts

I’m actually a bit annoyed at myself for being petty enough to post this.
But this really got under my skin today!! I have an 11 month old who isn’t keen on the pram, will sit in there for 15 minutes or so but as soon as I stop moving she has a meltdown.
So we were waiting for the lift as we were parked on floor 5 in the local shopping mall today and I was stood behind a queue of people waiting to use the lift. People with no shopping, no kids, just didn’t want to use the stairs. And it took 20 minutes for me to get in the lift because each time it would come to my floor it was full of people with no kids, no wheelchairs, no walking sticks so then we’d wait for the next one then one of the people in front of me with nothing to carry would get in it. I know every disability isn’t visible either but FFS I’m talking a load of people here. By the time some of them had eventually got in the lift it would’ve been quicker for them to have walked up and down the whole place! Meanwhile DD is having a meltdown because we’d been stood around for ages. Is it unreasonable to expect people to just use the stairs and free up the lifts for people who actually need them? If I have no pram with me I always use the stairs

I think anyone can use a lift. So I think YABU.

cardibach · 29/02/2020 19:02

People are allowed to use lifts. I wouldn’t use stairs for 5 floors either up or down. I have a dodgy knee which would hurt, though I don’t consider it a disability. Nobody has to walk just to make it more convenient for you. Especially so as you are moaning because you don’t want to use a pram.

bruce43mydog · 29/02/2020 19:03

They could of let you in fist seeing that you were struggling. But if they don't want to use the stairs they are just as entitled as anyone else to use the lift.

WalkingDeadTrainee · 29/02/2020 19:04

Yabu. If I want to use a lift for any reason, I will use a lift. Unless it's marked disabled or families only.
🤷
I can be tired from running up and down the stairs at work. Have new shoes which I am trying to walk into. Just simply not be in a mood for x flights of stairs. Recovering from chest infection... Endless possibilities why someone wants to take a lift instead

I have vertigo and dont use escalators, I use stairs. You are going unreasonable you cant tell what medical conditions people have. They could have a heart condition etc.

bruce43mydog · 29/02/2020 19:05

First spell check error

Doodlesquah1 · 29/02/2020 19:06

Tough luck I’m afraid

SprinklesMcDoodles · 29/02/2020 19:06

YABU, the lifts are for everyone.

Bunbunbunny · 29/02/2020 19:06

Yabu you have no idea why they are using the lift

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 29/02/2020 19:07

Lifts are for anyone. And it's not other people's problem that your child hates the pushchair.

Could you get a back carrier then you can take the stairs and ease dds tantrums.

adaline · 29/02/2020 19:07

First come, first served.

Aquarius1619 · 29/02/2020 19:08

Ok to be fair you’re making some very valid points... getting the feeling I may be being petty as I suggested in the first place.
I suppose I’m taking my frustration in that moment out on other people? I shall take it on board. Perhaps I need to get a grip!

YANBU OP.

Completely agree, I was unusually in the same position last week as I had a buggy (usually have the carrier on) and I was beside a family who had a lad in a very compact wheelchair. The people in the loft shuffled a bit to try let them in but there was no chance. So instead of about 2/3 people having the common decency to get out and walk the (heaven forfend) maximum 5 floors these guys had to abandon that set of lifts and head off to another set across the street.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 29/02/2020 19:08

YABU. You can't own the lifts because your child can't sit in a pushchair - nobody's child/DH/whoever gets to take precedent.

However, I will often tell my DC to use the stairs if the lifts are busy in shopping centres because they're able to, despite the fact that they love to use lifts and sing to the poor folk trapped inside with them.

TeetotalKoala · 29/02/2020 19:09

My step mum has breathing difficulties. She can't walk for long without needing a break, and she really struggled with even one flight of stairs.

You were in a long queue. You had no right to jump it or to expect other people to walk up the stairs just so you could get in. Having a pram doesn't entitle you to the space. If you want to be able to squeeze in like that, get a sling. Then you'll be able to get in there like everyone else. Otherwise make your peace with the fact thay prams can be a pain.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 29/02/2020 19:09

Ps I completely get that - in principle - lifts are for everyone but it’s being a good citizen to make way for those more in need than yourself.

APatchyTomCat · 29/02/2020 19:10

I wouldn't wait for a very long time, but if I had the chance, I'd nip in the lift.

I'm not lazy, I walk about 10 miles a day- I'll walk 4 miles to work and then get the lift two floors to my office. I have reduced lung function so stairs absolutely kill me.

HappentoHappen · 29/02/2020 19:11

@Cora1942 fist bump! I’m the same. Love a good staircase, but a down escalator is a terrifying experience for me.

WalkingDeadTrainee · 29/02/2020 19:12

My late DF used to get the snide comments from mums and elderly in these situations.
His heart was just above the " transplant waiting list" threshold. But he looked really ok. Some were really nasty.

MitziK · 29/02/2020 19:14

I don't use a stick. I'm not a little silverhaired old lady. I still need to use a lift.

I'd far rather be bouncing down multiple flights of stairs than stuck in a lift with three buggies with screaming toddlers in them. But I'm lumbered, too. even before you allow for buggies being rammed into you because some people have no concept of 'vehicle' size or that a limping adult isn't able to leap out the way at a moment's notice

RogueV · 29/02/2020 19:17

I agree. Pisses me off too

BarbedBloom · 29/02/2020 19:19

I have rheumatoid arthritis, some days I have a walking stick and some days I don't. I cannot go up or down stairs at all now as my knees don't work properly and can give way at any moment.

I had a horrible woman recently who was saying to her friend about lazy people always taking the lift when they should be using the stairs. I had a letter in my pocket as I was on the way to my rheumatologist which I showed to them. It really annoys me. Anyone can use the lift anyway.

Alsohuman · 29/02/2020 19:20

I don’t have a disability but I do have arthritis in my knees and they hurt like buggery on stairs. Of course YABU but you know that anyway.

BumbleBeee69 · 29/02/2020 19:21

it’s a Lift.. there is no specific criteria for using it... so you are being unreasonable...
