I feel really sorry for people on Strictly when the audience starts clapping. The poor sods have only been learning the dance for less than a week, they must be really dependent on the music to remind them what they should be doing, and chunks of it suddenly get drowned out by idiots clapping.

If I were a musician in those circumstances, I would make it my rule to introduce changes of tempo to put them off.

MrOnionsBumperRoller · 28/02/2020 08:30

DD6 has always refused point blank to be any part of 'Happy Birthday to You, wether it's aimed at her or not. At 5 years old she said it's too embarrassing, hence her refusal. I'd always dreaded it too, but it took a 5 year old to make me realise why! Clapping along is horrendous stuff, as I's audience participation of any form.

Bluetrews25 · 28/02/2020 09:11

I also cringe at all these American stylee choirs that are clapping, swaying, doing actions and looking like complete tits.
Could you just not?

DontTellThemYourNamePike · 28/02/2020 09:34

I took my mum to see the 'Dancing on Ice' tour for her birthday, many years ago. This really annoying man appeared before the show as a warm up. He was very upbeat and excitable and 'encouraged' the audience to clap along to music and, worse, wave their arms in the air while he sang and generally arsed about. It was excruciating and I wanted to hide under the seat (I tried - there was no roomGrin).

Not for me. YANBU.

Devlesko · 28/02/2020 14:00

it can be really annoying but as a musician you learn to switch off to this stuff, especially if you are a jazz musician. The worst does have to be clapping on two and four, but I just stand and clap my hands and for a few bars, get those on the front row/ near the front clapping on one and three then the rest get on the right beat and the music can swing.

TheNoodlesIncident · 28/02/2020 14:28

@TightPants - It was a weird yodelling noise too, she sounded a right lemon. It's so odd that I remember it like it was yesterday, yet was over 30 years ago. I wonder why some people like this sort of stuff and don't get the cringe? Also people who do Coo-eeee and Yeehaw; I could die for them.

@BoudoirPink - Actions?! It's a slippery slope. Hopefully not to singalongs...

Blackandgreenteas · 28/02/2020 14:38

Agree completely. So cringey. And most of them are out of time/ out of any time worth being in iyswim.

Imagine aliens arrived and saw us all flapping our hands against each other. Ridiculous

^^also this

crapette · 28/02/2020 15:19

Never move to France OP.
The French looooove clapping along.

OH sometimes has to give me a swift nudge to remind me not to make the seal noises out loud having already confiscated my bucket of fish before we get in the car

Lovingcup · 28/02/2020 15:44

This thread has made me laugh more than I’ve laughed at any other 😂 I’m afraid I’m one of those who’s guilty of clapping along out of time; my intentions are good but I can never seem to keep the rhythm going. Doesn’t stop me having a go though!

PumpkinPie2016 · 28/02/2020 16:02

I thought it was just me who hated this!

It absolutely makes me cringe. I can't stand it on TV shows like strictly, X factor etc. Or in the theatre. Or anywhere else for that matter.

No idea why but I just find it so cringey.

Hingeandbracket · 28/02/2020 16:05

It depends if they're doing it right - are they on the 1 and the 3 or the 2 and 4?
It's always a mixture - that's half of the horror of it.

ElderAve · 28/02/2020 16:13

It makes me feel uncomfortable because I can't keep in time so don't join in and look like the only person who doesn't know how to enjoy themselves Grin

Rafflesway · 28/02/2020 16:24

OP, YADDDNBU!

Gawd I hate anything remotely like this and my particular pet cringe is when performers try to get the crowd going by saying, "Come on" halfway through a song as per Roman Keating in that fake American accent. MEGA CRINGE!

Don't even get me started on Saturday Night Takeaway! TV is definitely turned over when that cringefest appears. I'm a miserable, over 60 😹

Rafflesway · 28/02/2020 16:24

Ronan - flaming auto correct!

APatchyTomCat · 28/02/2020 16:25

the singer stops singing and points the mic to the crowd so they can sing a verse. Look, pal, I didn't spent £50 on a ticket to hear 5000 tuneless drunks

Pisses me right off too

‘Everybody sing it!!’

Fuck right off, how about YOU frickin sing it, seeing as we’ve spaffed our over a hundred quid Hmm

The clapping thing is awful. Why DO performers do that walking sideways encouraging the clapping thing? Don’t they know how excruciating it is, do they not carry the gene?!

I refuse now anyway, the absolute most I will give up is three taps on the arm of my seat. That’s my limit.

TightPants · 28/02/2020 16:55

The whooping and shrieking on American chat shows and comedies filmed with live audiences make my insides shrivel too.
Confused

Rafflesway · 28/02/2020 17:07

You have just reminded me Tightpants.

I went to a live taping of an episode of "Family Feuds" at the Burbank Studios, California in the late 70's.

Don't know if they still do it but a man stood in front of the audience and kept holding up huge placards telling the audience to laugh, clap, whoop etc. during the show.

Gawd, it was dire! The Americans there loved it!🙄

WaggleWiggle · 28/02/2020 20:56

YANBU. I hate the idiots that clap. They totally ruin the music. I feel like shouting, ‘Shut up - nobody came here and paid to hear your hands smacking together.’

dustibooks · 28/02/2020 23:40

Aaaaargghhhhhh........ It's 2 & 4. Two and Four. The backbeats.

TWO AND FOUR.

please
Smile

CrocodileFrock · 29/02/2020 00:58

It's the whole 'doing things in unison' concept that I can't stand.

Clapping, dancing, singing...

katy1213 · 29/02/2020 01:04

I hate it! Nothing would induce me to join in!
But why are audiences so over-the-top these days? It's a standing ovation and whooping and hollering everytime you go to the theatre. What do they do when they see anything that's actually good?
Sometimes I feel I'm being mean and people don't get out much!

Theroigne · 29/02/2020 03:24

Always thought it was just me but YANBU op!

Theroigne · 29/02/2020 03:26

I’m going to feel so much better now about not clapping in public! Thanks for starting this Op. I agree about the whole cringing inside thing... sitting there clapping like a fucking seal is so not what I’m about!

WhatShe5aid · 29/02/2020 04:28

I can't stand watching the women's floor routine in gymnastics because of this, especially as the tempo often changes you get the awkward change of straggling claps.

It must be distracting for the other gymnasts doing their beam routine.

Soapytoad · 29/02/2020 07:31

I hate it. Anyone who watches Mrs Browns Boys and enjoys it would do this.
