esp.when it starts full on then gradually peters out until there are a few left clapping out of tune, i just want to crawl into a hole and never come out it's so cringy.
everyone to their own and as much as i love seeing people having fun, this is really..urgh.

Ibloodylovewomen · 27/02/2020 22:36

You are not being unreasonable, it makes me cringe too....but I still do it Grin

SamSeabornforPresident · 27/02/2020 22:37

the contestants tap their feet or 'dance' along

Once I caught a bit of the Strictly 'analysis' show in the early evening, and the judges 'danced' onto the set. I nearly died there, on the spot.

Wildthyme · 27/02/2020 22:42

I hate it too. Fucking live shows where you'd be really lost in the music but for the frontman encouraging the clappy fuckers by clapping away with hands aloft to get them going. That is NOT what I went to see. Or hear. Shut the bloody fuck up. It tires out my arms too.

It's not about you.

TheNoodlesIncident · 27/02/2020 22:59

I absolutely cannot do this, because a) it's so cringey and b) I am dyspraxic and couldn't keep time if you held a gun to my head. I can't march in time either. So I refuse to do it and just start making compensating movements like adjusting my clothing. So it looks like I'm just about to join in, when I've fixed my pocket properly.

See also: Singing "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow" and responding to that Oggy Oggy Oggy thing, whatever that was about.

There was a bluecoat at Pontin's who had a trademark whoop and she would do it whenever she was walking amongst all the chalets, so people would pop their heads out and wave (cringe) or whoop back (cringe cringe). I died for her every time.

DressesWithPocketsRockMyWorld · 27/02/2020 23:09

YANBU!!!! I go see a lot of live music but I will not clap along not even one bit. Makes my teeth itch.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 27/02/2020 23:10

I used to feel like thst OP, however, now my DCs are teens it gives me enormous pleasure to enthusiastically join in whilst loudly encouraging them to do similar. Because I'm a twat and small things amuse me.

It's strangely liberating though. Try it, you might enjoy it!

cricketmum84 · 27/02/2020 23:10

Nope you are so not being U. Clapping along to music actually makes me want to stab people. I have to turn the tv over if they start doing it! cringe cringe cringe!!!

Tessie87 · 27/02/2020 23:15

@DesLynamsMoustache completely agree with this...I think this is a cover-up when they're crap live.

My pet hates are when people sing along to Sex on Fire and all throw their arms in the air - usually accompanied by a break in the music when the DJ wants everybody to sing loudly and off-key, and also, what I hate more than anything is toe-tapping. People standing holding a pint, whilst tapping their toes in time to the music. I can't stand it. Oh, and people insisting on singing along when they don't know the words.

I just avoid gigs for all of the above reasons.

TheNoodlesIncident · 27/02/2020 23:17

Cringeorama. It reminds me of a terrible afternoon show called Live At Three on Irish TV in the 1980s which was full of terrible ‘musical acts’ with compulsory clap-along from the audience.

Scotland had something similar called Thingummyjig. Live country-style music and artfully arranged people sitting around the set looking enthusiastic. According to family legend, my gran appeared in one episode, sitting on one of the carefully arranged haybales and clapping along.

They also do the swaying from side to side Shock the horror never ends

BreconBeBuggered · 27/02/2020 23:27

It's not about you
My opinion on clappers is exactly about me, and everyone else's post on this thread is about theirs. What exactly are you objecting to, @Wildthyme?

FlamingoAndJohn · 27/02/2020 23:36

I’d like to see a Venn diagram of clap-along audiences and people who like Mrs Brown’s Boys. I expect there is a large overlap.

DingleberryRose · 27/02/2020 23:47

It makes me DIE inside!!!

maddiemookins16mum · 28/02/2020 06:35

@3rdNamechange. Yes, I see it on Pointless and it just looks so awkward.

ShriekingBansheela · 28/02/2020 06:43

You would hate a cruise when they salute the staff buy twirling a napkin over their heads

Launch the torpedo.

BoudoirPink · 28/02/2020 07:02

Exactly, @TheNoodlesIncident. Yes, ‘Dead At Three’ also featured swaying in seats and —sometimes — actions.

YoTheGinPussyOfStMawesOnThigh · 28/02/2020 07:16

Rows of mindless clappers look like penguins waiting for their next meal to me. The temptation to throw a bucket of herrings at them.........

Hingeandbracket · 28/02/2020 07:17

YANBU it is wank

Katisha · 28/02/2020 07:24

Clapping on 2 and 4 gives it more swing depending on the music. But this leads me on to a pet rant which is why is pretty much all pop music in 4? Can nobody think in 3?

BedraggledBlitz · 28/02/2020 07:31

There was actually a blockbusters hand jive dance. Haha.

I dislike the pressure of a group clap. At school when we hand to applaud in assemblies we'd all try to clap in time, that was weirdly fun!

Runnerduck34 · 28/02/2020 07:48

I hate it too! Spoils the music , so yanbu. I also like singing along!

Wilkolampshade · 28/02/2020 07:51

@ShriekingBansheela

🤣👍

PineappleDanish · 28/02/2020 07:54

Clapping along should be reserved for toddlers. It's horrendous. Clap to show appreciation by all means.

Clapping like a group of seals, just don't. Awful.

TightPants · 28/02/2020 07:56

‘Trademark whoop’ Grin Thanks @TheNoodlesIncident, I’m cringing so badly right now!
Best thread in ages.

HeronLanyon · 28/02/2020 08:04

Oh totally agree. Really embarrassing and often is so badly out of time with whatever is going on in stage I just feel sorry for the performers. Even when they have egged it on by mad over the top/over head clapping to ‘get is all going’.

I also find chants on marches/demos excruciating at times. I absolutely hate it when I join in and then suddenly everyone else just stops and I’m left like a Wally shouting ‘shame on you’ randomly at Downing Street. It’s just awful. I love a good full throated full on chant - miners’ strike and Iraq war demos were good for this but have been on a few recently which have been so achingly middle class (I am too) that it’s just embarrassed/self conscious and tails off.

What do we want? No clapping! When do we want it? NOW!!

Damntheman · 28/02/2020 08:08

Musician and I kind of hate it ;) Mostly.. It's usually not in time, a lot of the times it's slightly ahead of the beat, or slightly behind it, which is a massive headfuck for anyone attempting to keep the tune at the correct tempo.

What I hate most though is applause at the end that's uniformly together. I like applause to be smattered chaos noise that turns into one smooth blanket of sound. In Norway they all clap in time and it makes me weirdly uncomfortable.
