esp.when it starts full on then gradually peters out until there are a few left clapping out of tune, i just want to crawl into a hole and never come out it's so cringy.
everyone to their own and as much as i love seeing people having fun, this is really..urgh.
flameproof hat on Grin

It's not clapping along that really bugs me, it's the person who refuses to stop clapping (my mum) when everybody else has stopped, so then others feel obliged to join in again to be polite and you get sorry little waves of half-hearted, arrhythmic noise.

iheartislesofwight · 27/02/2020 20:44

ahoy yep, totally agree our good old mums still embarrass us even when we're all grown up Grin

It's not just that some clap on the 2 and 4 and some on the 1 and the 3, it's the ones that clap on the 2 and 7/19ths and 4 and 4 thirds.

It's about as in time as tipping a bottle of coke over a bowl of space rocks.

Charlottejbt · 27/02/2020 20:47

Yes, this is really cringey. It's one reason why I like classical concerts better than pop: even if you could clap along to the music or whistle the tune, hopefully nobody is going to. Well, except for the Last Night of thd Proms, which is unrivalled for cringiness!

marmitepasta · 27/02/2020 20:48

Oh god I am a clap-alonger!!!
I had no idea this was cringe!!!!

mummyofthreemunchkins · 27/02/2020 20:49

Oh my god... I thought I was on my own!!! I went to a concert last year and the lady behind me clapped away through the whole thing!! It drove me absolutely mental 😣😣

AgeLikeWine · 27/02/2020 20:49

YANBU. At all.

I recently saw an Andre Rieu concert on the telly. Everyone in the audience was over 60 and everyone was clapping along enthusiastically.
It was super cheesy and Uber cringe. I had to turn it off, it was that toe-curlingly grim.

Blackbirdblue30 · 27/02/2020 20:53

Found my tribe! Also: Mexican Waves make me die inside.

chilimartini · 27/02/2020 20:56

Makes me shiver-cringe!!!!!

Bluetrews25 · 27/02/2020 20:56

Yep, cringey.

BoudoirPink · 27/02/2020 20:59

Cringeorama. It reminds me of a terrible afternoon show called Live At Three on Irish TV in the 1980s which was full of terrible ‘musical acts’ with compulsory clap-along from the audience.

Charlottejbt · 27/02/2020 20:59

@marmitepasta It's one of those totally subjective things. I probably hate it because it exposes my complete lack of rhythm!

Flixsfoilball · 27/02/2020 21:03

Clapping I can deal with, singing I can't! I have a friend that insists on singing along in my car, I want to throw her out of the moving vehicle but instead gradually increase the volume to drown out the awful wailing.....

Devlesko · 27/02/2020 21:03

I'm interested in how they clap out of tune Grin
As long as they are clapping on one and three then that's fine, two and four and I have to lead them or we'd be all over the place. (musicians)

maddiemookins16mum · 27/02/2020 21:06

It ruins Strictly. Plus I’d get bored clapping for a solid 2 minutes.

Imonlymoominafterall · 27/02/2020 21:06

I hate it too. And I feel homicidal when people sing along to music in shops. But I'm a miserable fucker. Grin

lidoshuffle · 27/02/2020 21:10

Oh god, and at the theatre when the actors come on for a bow, fair enough people applaud. But then they come on again, and people's claps are a bit more half-hearted cos they want to make their train. But some divvy poseur in the audience stands up and starts a bit of a competative ovation stand-off. By the third time the cast troops on it's just embarrassing for everyone, with a scant half dozen people clapping counterpointing the pounding of seats snapping up and the stampeding to the exits.

AhoyMrBeaver · 27/02/2020 21:14

Ugh, yeah, the encore showoff. They loved it more than everybody else because they understood it.

thepeopleversuswork · 27/02/2020 21:16

God I totally agree it’s awful!

Makes me think about Christian rock festivals in the 80s 😂

SamSeabornforPresident · 27/02/2020 21:18

It's the bloody BBC. They always have the audience clapping along on their 'light entertainment' programming. It's horrible. Nothing is immune. You can imagine Lewis Capaldi warbling away and the audience gamely clapping along. Urgh.

ManonBlackbeak · 27/02/2020 21:18

OMG yes. Remember Paul O'Grady's teatime chatshow? The audience used to clap a long to everything on that. Used to make me cringe like mad!

ElderAve · 27/02/2020 21:21

I love it when it's done properly with enthusiasm and joy, think gospel choir, rock concert. Most English people seated in theatres etc don't do it like that though Grin

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 27/02/2020 21:22

Oh god, yes, clapping along to the Blickbusters music at the end Confused

I am waaaay more miserable as I have the same reaction to musicals and when people start randomly singing while they play their geetar!

ALongHardWinter · 27/02/2020 21:24

Not too bothered about people clapping, but what I really do not like is when someone sings without any musical accompaniment. It has irritated me for years and up until a few years ago,I couldn't put my finger on what it was that I didn't like about it. I realise now that I just don't like the human singing voice on it's own.

AhoyMrBeaver · 27/02/2020 21:24

Does anybody fancy going to Last Night of the Proms this year? Relentless flag-waving and enthusiastic clapping all night. Looks brilliant.
