Sorry if there is already a thread about this, I couldn’t find one.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-us-canada-51638871/six-year-old-girl-arrested-at-florida-school

AIBU to think this is totally unacceptable and the US police are heartless and cruel?

It’s things like this, that put me off ever living in America 😢😡

OP posts:

She certainly won't misbehave in class again

Oh yawn. She’ll probably have terrifying nightmares at the thought of even going to class again. Hmm

Papergirl1968 · 26/02/2020 22:14

I don’t know. Yes, it’s an extreme measure. But we don’t know just how awful her behaviour had been.
And I wonder how her behaviour has been since as I think this happened in September.
If it turned things around, it might just have done that kid a favour.
I speak as a parent whose daughters (adopted, lots of issues) have been hell at school.

Chilver · 26/02/2020 22:14

To clarify, I don’t think anything a 6yo could do in a school setting warrants calling the police, ever!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 26/02/2020 22:15

Restrained with zip ties?

A SIX YEAR OLD CHILD?

WTF?????

KatherineJaneway · 26/02/2020 22:16

What could she have possibly done at six years old that would lead to her being arrested over so many other courses of action.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 26/02/2020 22:16

speak as a parent whose daughters (adopted, lots of issues) have been hell at school.

Are you saying you’d support your children being cable tied and lead crying into a police car aged 6?

SinkGirl · 26/02/2020 22:17

I can’t watch it.

I read in a social media post earlier that the child has behavioural issues related to sleep apnoea, which have led to police involvement previously. Not sure if that’s the case but even more disturbing if true - a six year old with additional needs being arrested and restrained with zip ties? Absolutely disgusting.

chomalungma · 26/02/2020 22:18

But we don’t know just how awful her behaviour had been

Young children's behaviour can be awful. I've seen it myself in schools as a teacher.

But I can see no justification for putting zip tie handcuffs on a child.

None whatsoever.

It is certainly not going to help any situation. She didn't seem to be misbehaving when the police arrested her. She seemed quite calm until the police turned up.

EmmiJay · 26/02/2020 22:21

The little girl has behavioral issues I read last week. The school are totally washing their hands of the situation and are blaming the US equivalent of SENCO for calling the police. Disgusting and infuriating!

Papergirl1968 · 26/02/2020 22:22

Juan if they’d attacked a teacher, yes. As it happens dd1 wasn’t with me ages six and dd2 wasn’t aggressive at that age.
Both have attacked teachers and myself plenty of times since, and have been arrested and handcuffed as juveniles.
I see the seven year old boy had attacked a teacher too. Teachers should not have to put up with being assaulted even by young children.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 26/02/2020 22:24

The fact that he was sacked suggests that Americans are every bit as horrified by this as we are.

Or it's damage limitation because it was made public and they know what a load of bullying scum it makes them look like.

YakkityYakYakYak · 26/02/2020 22:24

The worst thing about this is that I didn’t even need to click on the link to know she was black. Absolutely shameful.

chomalungma · 26/02/2020 22:25

I see the seven year old boy had attacked a teacher too. Teachers should not have to put up with being assaulted even by young children

They should not have to put up with being assaulted by young children.
That's true.

At the same time, young children should not be being put in handcuffs and arrested.

Because that will not help them at all.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 26/02/2020 22:25

and have been arrested and handcuffed as juveniles.

And did that do the trick? They’ve behaved ever since?

millymoo1202 · 26/02/2020 22:28

Truly disturbing, I only watched half!

Papergirl1968 · 26/02/2020 22:30

No, they haven’t but they have very complex emotional and behavioural problems and mental health issues as a result of their early childhood.
I don’t think the numerous temporary exclusions they had from school did them any good at all.

KillingEvenings · 26/02/2020 22:34

Why have 20% voted for YABU
because the question is about whether the actions in the video should put the OP off wanting to live in america. Yes it's horrific, but there have been a lot of worse things in America (like the actual killing of children by police/security who are later acquitted) in recent years.

Pavlova31 · 26/02/2020 22:36

Horrendous.Poor little girl Sad

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 26/02/2020 22:36

No, they haven’t but they have very complex emotional and behavioural problems and mental health issues as a result of their early childhood.

So what on Earth makes you think it will do the trick for this child, who you have zero background information on? Confused

Leaannb · 26/02/2020 22:37

@Sleepover1 No more than you guys. At least I didn’t have to wait 6 months for a gall bladder removal. Not to mention I arrested a 12 yo today myself and is sitting in Juvenile Detention until his court date next week. Did I feel bad when I tased him? Nope. Did I feel bad when I arrested and put him in my squad car? Nope. Did I feel bad bad for the teacher who will have to have reconstruction surgery on her face. Most definitely

Papergirl1968 · 26/02/2020 22:41

I don’t know, Juan. I just said it might do the trick.
Neither you nor I know the full facts.

outherealone · 26/02/2020 22:41

Fucking hell. Scares me to death that we are following the US like lemmings. That poor girl. Of course she is black Sad

GreyishDays · 26/02/2020 22:42

I presume it would never be used, but -
The age of criminal responsibility in Scotland is 8 years old.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 26/02/2020 22:43

At least I didn’t have to wait 6 months for a gall bladder removal

😂😂😂

Wtaf?

America is fine to cable tie ) year olds because you can get quicker surgery than in the U.K. ? Confused

chomalungma · 26/02/2020 22:44

Neither you nor I know the full facts

No matter what the child has done, it is wrong to put a 6 year old child in handcuffs and arrest them.

I can't believe that sentence has to be said.
