Italy reports 127 new cases and 3 new deaths, raising country's total to 655 cases and 17 dead t.co/eUoE2b20hL

HasaDigaEebowai · 27/02/2020 18:52

34% of the italian diagnosed cases are hospitalized according to worldometer. So much for it being mainly "mild"

Random18 · 27/02/2020 18:55

I think there are a lot more cases in Italy than been tested.

Many people probably have mild symptoms. Same in Iran. The death toll to number of cases doesn't stack up.

Reallybadidea · 27/02/2020 18:56

Seeing as the Italy outbreak appears to have originated in a hospital I don't think that means that the virus is necessarily more dangerous than previously thought. At least some of the people who died were already receiving hospital treatment.

Interesting snippet...

In China when people test positive but have mild symptoms they are given a choice about whether to go into one of the quarantine centres or to stay in their apartment for a specific length of time.

If they choose the latter some kind of paper tape is put across their doors that breaks if they leave.

The people you see on Twitter being forcibly removed from their apartment buildings are people who have already purposefully violated their quarantine.

I thought that was quite interesting context to the videos being seen...

Moomin8 · 27/02/2020 19:00

A lot of Italians are heavy smokers so they are likely to have more complications imo.

No wonder Matt Hancock didn’t answer the question as to how many ECMO beds there are. From the Guardian:

“England has only 15 available beds for adults to treat the most severe respiratory failure and will struggle to cope if there are more than 28 patients who need them if the number of coronavirus cases rises, according to the government and NHS documents.

Ministers have revealed in parliamentary answers that there are 15 available beds for adult extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment at five centres across England. The government said this could be increased in an emergency. There were 30 such beds in total available during the 2018-19 winter flu season.

But an NHS England document prepared in November 2017 reveals the system will struggle to cope if more than 28 patients need the treatment”

I'm not particularly worried as I'm sure my DS has an unrelated virus, however at what point do we start to be concerned about symptoms in line with corona virus? My DS8 has come home from school today with a fever that won't go down, a sore throat, very drowsy, aching muscles, can't walk very far and his "lungs hurt" (his words) he has no cough, and as far as I know has had no contact with anyone with the virus. But at what point do we need to worry about mentioning symptoms to 111 etc?
Surely we don't know exactly where this virus is with the long incubation period?

my son has been doing school deep cleans with a zero hours job he was dabbling with

ive told him no more. he agrees and won't be doing it, all they were given was a pair of gloves, why should he get infected on a minimum wage job?!

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 19:04

Snowdropdelight · 27/02/2020 19:05

VERY I would be concerned , our school has shut because some one is showing symptoms and has been sent home, school needs a deep clean.

Your dc could very easily have been mixing with dc from infected areas or from those already infected.

France reports 20 new cases of coronavirus t.co/eUoE2b20hL

FelicityFebruary · 27/02/2020 19:06

The Chinese experience is of few cases in little kids.

HasaDigaEebowai · 27/02/2020 19:06

Italy has apparently announced that it is going to stop testing the contacts of those who test positive and will now only test them if they have symptoms. Which seems like an attempt to slow the figures to me.

NettleTea · 27/02/2020 19:07

Im slightly concerned about my mother. went down with a terrible flu like thing on Tuesday. Came back from Seville on Sunday
she is having chex=st and breathing problems before she went and has told us to keep away, as daughter has cystic fibrosis
School 300 yards away from us had a half term ski trip to Italy, not isolating any of the kids at all as far as I can see.

My son at a different school where they are doing 100% exclusion from school from any affected area.

But Im worrying about my mum

130 holiday makers from the hotel in Tenerife have all been cleared to come home, but will all be put in quarantine once back? How do they ensure that they don’t infect anyone on the way back?

MrsStrangerThing · 27/02/2020 19:12

Warren, I beat you for once, already posted Grin I am a frontline HCP in NI so will be interesting to see what advice we are given over the next few days!
