I would be really upset if my loved ones won't get the burial they asked for. When you can't get their ashes as there's been a mass cremation.

If things are as bad as to need mass cremation, no one is going to want to attend a normal funeral out of fear of infection... At this stage I think people are going to be losing multiple loves ones and friends.

Its not worth thinking about, but I think our 'normal' reactions will be different simply because our sense of 'normal' will be suspended and altered. Our expectations and needs will be quite different.

You have to see things through the lens of extraordinary circumstances changing what we prioritise and think important.

bellinisurge · 27/02/2020 17:19

Just because the authorities have grim things like mass burial plans doesn't mean they expect to use them. I would be disappointed in any local authorities that don't have worst case scenario emergency planning. During the Cold War when I was a teenager, they must have had this.
I strongly recommend against upsetting yourself over this.
Speaking as a general prepper.

@Redpriestandmozart that's a great short video, thanks. As is the one about ARDS that followed.

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2020 17:24

I think my overall point here is about communication and how - if this gets really bad - we will all need to be prepared psychologically for this.

The messages that we will get will be about that.

In terms of things, its also worth thinking that the population of Hubei province is not much difference to the UK.

So the number of deaths there have been there, might give you a better sense numbers and risk. (Not forgetting that those deaths have been stacked up in the most elderly in the population).

The idea of mass cremations therefore doesn't seem to be a likely one.

The risk is far more about the capacity of the health care system as a whole and how that might have knock on effects (including indirect deaths) and the economic impact (particularly supply shock and a massive drop in demand in some areas).

This is liable to have a political influence too. Such as a desire for more nationalism and less globalism.

With Tokyo Marathon cancelled wonder what will happen with London Marathon....its in 59 days time with international runners from all over coming in to run

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 17:29

650 cases of #Coronavirus in #italy

DominicCummingsForehead · 27/02/2020 17:30

@Lycidas exactly.

eeeyoresmiles · 27/02/2020 17:30

I'm sure someone will argue with me on this, but I don't see it as necessarily denying treatment. More being realistic about how much can be done to help people anyway.

I think the decisions are easier once people are already critical and I agree that this will happen and that it's appropriate for it to happen (it already happens).

What's less straightforward and a bit more unsettling is if simpler interventions that might stop people from becoming critical cases in the first place might also be rationed, and if so what the criteria would be.

Gammeldragz · 27/02/2020 17:31

@FourTeaFallOut thanks. That's a short clip of it, not the whole thing, and as I found from this Snopes article www.snopes.com/fact-check/coronavirus-graph-spreading-faster/ the clip alone is quite misleading. I wanted to see how our current numbers compare to other pandemics at a similar point, that video only had data up until early Feb and 40k cases. We are at double that now...

orangepepper · 27/02/2020 17:31

Anyone else feel like they are just waiting for the rest of the UK cases to be announced??
Would be interesting to know what exposure the tenerife case had ... ie how they caught it! Were they friends with the people from Italy??

Snowdropdelight · 27/02/2020 17:31

Our school is closed tomorrow for cleaning.

orangepepper · 27/02/2020 17:32

Thanks for your updates ofwarren

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 17:33

No problem. It's been quiet this afternoon really

YoursTunbridgeWells · 27/02/2020 17:45

@RedToothBrush YOu are very good at putting things into a wider perspective.

Ciwirocks · 27/02/2020 17:48

I have just read in a local paper that 5 primary schools are going ahead with their skiing trips to north Italy next week. That is just madness in my opinion.

LittleRen · 27/02/2020 17:50

@orangepepper The Tenerife cases are Italian, all four of them.

MrsStrangerThing · 27/02/2020 17:52

Redtoothbrush, you come across as very knowledgeable and intelligent. I enjoy reading your posts. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

wheresmymojo · 27/02/2020 17:59

What is interesting is that if the Govt and local councils prepare for the reasonable worst case outcome it is sensible and prudent.

If individuals prepare for the reasonable worst case outcome you are a tin foil hat wearer and have mental health issues Hmm

orangepepper · 27/02/2020 18:00

@LittleRen I was referring the the UK case that was positive and had stayed at the same hotel in Tenerife as the 4 Italian cases.

Juancornetto · 27/02/2020 18:01

I find it very strange that there's been no mention of Cobra convening. Is that not a thing any more?

CoCoPops55 · 27/02/2020 18:04

So they are allowing 130 people out of the Tenerife hotel at least 50 are coming back to the uk, will they keep these people in isolation once they return?

They should do!

MissPoldark · 27/02/2020 18:06

Yes, there are still Cobra meetings and I’m sure they’ve held these about CV

Delatron · 27/02/2020 18:06

They’ll probably just say ‘go about your business unless you show symptoms’. Seems like the current government crap plan.
