Former HCP/pandemic lead (retired due to autoimmune disease) - thanks for the thread which I’m finding helpful. All the current pandemic government plans that the guardian is quoting from come from documents linked to this page. www.gov.uk/guidance/pandemic-flu#pandemic-flu-plans Obviously this is not an influenza virus so a vaccine is not going to appear in the time a new flu vaccine can be created and spread (RO) and fatality rates have to be reconsidered but it’s still useful to see what the government believes to be best practice in managing a pandemic.

When is it @AlexaShutUp?
I would be inclined to still attend if it's tomorrow or the next day, but be really hot on hand hygiene.
If news gets worse, they can always drop out at last minute.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 11:09

Spain confirms 2 new coronavirus cases in Madrid; preliminary information indicates both cases don't have travel history t.co/eUoE2b20hL

AlexaShutUp · 27/02/2020 11:11

Ofwarren, it starts tonight but they're due to watch on Saturday. Wondering whether I should try to get them tickets for tonight instead.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 11:15

That sounds like a good compromise @AlexaShutUp
It's so hard to know what to do for the best though.

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2020 11:15

No confirmed cases in our area as yet but we're only an hour's drive from Buxton. What do people think?

It's Buxton.

There is snow.

Risk is still currently minimal. It might not be in a few weeks.

See your parents.

UnitDare · 27/02/2020 11:15

I was just looking at a pic of people in hazmats disinfecting whole roads in South Korea. I cannot imagine that happening here for a second.

AlexaShutUp · 27/02/2020 11:17

RedToothBrush, it's not so much about seeing my parents as making them sit in a crowded theatre. My dad is in his eighties and has diabetes and COPD. My mum is a bit younger but has previously had a pulmonary embolism. I just don't want to put them at risk.

woodchuck99 · 27/02/2020 11:19

My dd is involved in a theatre production this week, and my elderly parents are supposed to be coming to watch. Not sure if I should tell them to stay at home instead? No confirmed cases in our area as yet but we're only an hour's drive from Buxton. What do people think?

I'm attending a theatre production this weekend despite being immunosuppressed. I think the risk is still low at the moment plus even if I do catch it at least I will get good medical treatment as the NHS is not yet overwhelmed by it..I suspect that I will have to start being much more careful in future so want to get out while I have the chance.

Mittens030869 · 27/02/2020 11:20

I've asked about my symptoms. They are only testing people right now if they have either been in an infected area or been in contact with someone who has tested positive.

But most of us would never know if we've been in contact with an infected person. There's a 2 week incubation period and we're not in the habit of asking strangers if they've been overseas, in an airport or been in contact with someone who has tested positive. Plus the fact that people often test negative several times before they test positive

It's a time bomb basically.

Time bomb is the word.
We just won't know until after half term people all back..

Of Warren, I'm very grateful for your updates and I'm a big girl and can understand the 'breaking' element of them. And also to choose not to read the thread if neccsary.

Balkinfly · 27/02/2020 11:25

@Ciwirocks I agree. I have taken my DS out of school (since Tuesday) after realising where the school trip was in Italy. I think it is irresponsible too.

I will reassess on Monday but the Head Teacher only sent a letter to pupils when we took our DS out of school and then subsequent news headlines that other schools had closed.

They were not going to pass on this information to parents as they told me on the phone, that only people who went on the trip would be sent relevant information. Hmm

I was just in the chemist picking up my inhalers and I overheard a member of staff on the phone arguing with suppliers about getting enough face masks

I think this is sensible and proportionate.

At this stage it is still a small risk. In the coming weeks this might well change. We don't know how long this will go on for.

It is important psychologically to have human contact, so until things change I'd encourage it within reason.

The Buxton case came from a parent who had returned from Tenerife. So you can probably assume that their return was recent and they acted promptly.

You should be more worried when cases start to pop up whether there isn't a travel link identified or isn't part of a known cluster.

We aren't there yet.

NathanNathan · 27/02/2020 11:33

Thanks @Dunlurking. Nice to hear from people with experience, appreciate you signposting the info on planning.

sundowners · 27/02/2020 11:33

Completely agree with this. For a country with a population that high to have controlled it- by such simple measures as taking everyone's temperature when flying in- so easy, why aren't we doing that?

Iknewyouwerewaitingforme Thu 27-Feb-20 09:19:39
For Pakistan with a population of near 200 Million people to only just get its first case is very telling. All main Pakistan airports have been screening all inbound passengers for temperature/other signs on landing for weeks now. I had my temperature taken last week when visiting Islamabad- then flew back into Heathrow- absolutely nothing/no checks. This is exactly what we and all other countries should have been doing from the start.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 11:35

I agree Red do these things sooner rather than later where we may be in a worse state of affairs. It's safer now than it possibly could be in a few weeks time.

AlexaShutUp · 27/02/2020 11:35

Thanks all for the reassurances re the theatre. Trying to keep all of this in proportion!

Dunlurking · 27/02/2020 11:35

NathanNathan thanks Blush You’re welcome!

comfypantsisme · 27/02/2020 11:37

awful thing to say, but I`m glad ds is home educated. I wonder if the numbers of home ed kids will suddenly go up??

comfypantsisme · 27/02/2020 11:39

I think ds online school (and other online school providers) may do well from this!

I`m watching as things go on. I think the shit WILL hit the fan at some point. I think the government know this and are fannying about!

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 11:39

I think they probably will comfy
I'm going to have to deregister mine because he can't just stay off school.

anywinewilldonow · 27/02/2020 11:41

Daily Mail have said the Buxton victim stayed at the quarantined Tenerife hotel
