To think if you don't give your kids pancakes

Tomorrow that is really mean!

Unless you never partake in pancake /shrove Tuesday,

If you do, and just 'can't be bothered' you're a mean mum/dad..

Have seen people who can perfectly afford it saying nah won't be bothered making kids any pancakes or giving them something sweet.

No pancakes but the DC have had a lesson in Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and Lent.

wineandtoastfortea · 25/02/2020 19:03

Nope. Can’t be bothered. I’ve been at work. They've done it at school. Reckon they’ll grow up in to reasonably stable adults.

ToftyAC · 25/02/2020 19:09

DS had pancakes at school. He’s had a proper tea at home. Jesus, call SS! Obvs we’re neglectful 🙄

FaveNumberIs2 · 25/02/2020 19:15

I think you are being a bit judgemental. So what if it’s pancake day. Do you insist on valentines cards for everyone on Valentine’s Day, eggs and simnel cake on Easter Day, stockings on Christmas Day, flags on St George’s day, etc?

Figgygal · 25/02/2020 19:17

We had pancakes on Sunday

Got in at 6 went straight into dinner prep, are and then bath night

It’s not a “thing in our house” tbh

Offendedofsurrey · 25/02/2020 19:27

I’d love to know what those who don’t have time /can’t be arsed to cook pancakes make instead? As one of the easiest meals ever, we frequently have them because I don’t get home until 6pm. If there are easier things I could be making, enlighten me

Arrrkid · 25/02/2020 19:32

I'm a cook in a primary school. We had SO many disappointed kids today, as it seems a lot of parents, who couldn't be assed making their own kids pancakes, pacified the kids with the promise they'd get pancakes at school. (A school feeding 450 kids cant possibly make fresh pancakes, as much as we would really love to have).

Geekynzmum · 25/02/2020 19:36

Yabu. Shrove Tuesday is a religious day and is traditionally a day to use up all the items being given up for Lent, so it's not just about pancakes.
I am not religious so I do not celebrate it. My DD has however had pancakes at after school club tonight so hasn't missed out.

flirtygirl · 25/02/2020 19:37

Well I'm mean then...
I have never given my kids pancakes on pancake day and never will.

I see no reason to pander to holidays/days at all.

Genzymoo · 25/02/2020 19:37

My 3 year old has yet to express any religious affiliation, let alone commit to giving up eggs, flour and milk for Lent. When she does, I will make sure that she eats her pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. Until then, she can continue to eat them when I make them at weekends, or on random nights during the year,

Goatinthegarden · 25/02/2020 19:46

I spent my morning supervising small children make pancake batter and chop up soft fruit. Then, tidied all that crap up and then spent one and a half continuous hours flipping pancakes for the whole class whilst simultaneously teaching them and keeping order.

I thought I was teaching them practical weighing and measuring skills. I hadn’t realised I was buffering the little treasures from potential child cruelty at the hands of their ‘mean’ parents.... eyeroll.

Runnerduck34 · 25/02/2020 19:52

DC are always keen for pancakes particularly on pancake Day, it's a big deal for them and they like making them. I think pancakes are overated myself but always make sure I do them on pancake day ,it's tradition and I would feel mean not making an effort

Illstartexercisingtomorrow · 25/02/2020 19:53

What a ridiculous post.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 25/02/2020 19:58

Brian Bilston's poem for today made me laugh!

To think if you don't give your kids pancakes
Frazzledstar1 · 25/02/2020 20:02

We usually do but didn’t have time this year as I worked late tonight and didn’t get home until 6pm: Kids both had some at school/nursery anyway. They are not deprived children in the slightest:

OP you are making it sound like people decided not to bother with Christmas or something: very dramatic.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 25/02/2020 20:13

We did pancakes because DS2 had his friend over and they asked so sweetly I couldn't say no. If his mate hadn't been here he probably wouldn't have been bothered at all as we have them most weekends.

You're being ridiculous to use words such as "mean" to describe parents who don't cook pancakes on one arbitrary day.

HandsDownRoundTheTown · 25/02/2020 20:15

I know what you mean OP ...

Theukisgreatt · 25/02/2020 20:23

Last year DH was playing sport until 21:30 and I was raging.. yes we still had them! Grin fully paid up adult with no children. We also have pancakes at the weekend sometimes but it's not the same as PANCAKE DAY!!

MyHeartIsInCornwall · 25/02/2020 20:25

I’m usually the crap mum that forgets but I pulled through this year and brought the goods! 😂 I have 3 boys, they’d never let this one pass without a word! 😬 All happy here. But tbh, even as I stood at the till in Aldi I said to myself, ‘we can have pancakes any day of the year!’ I felt like such an adult! 🤣

HenHarrier · 25/02/2020 20:37

It’s about 2 mins to make pancake batter and about 90 seconds to cook a pancake. Not sure why it’s a thing to be “too busy” to make pancakes?

Parker231 · 25/02/2020 20:38

I never have in the ingredients for pancakes but the ready made ones from Tesco’s are lovely - 30 seconds in the microwave.

Harls1969 · 25/02/2020 20:38

I always make pancakes on shrove Tuesday (it's about the only time I can be arsed!). Not because we're religious (certainly won't be giving anything up for Lent!) but just because it's a bit of a habit. It doesn't bother me that other parents don't, it's not that big a deal

HenHarrier · 25/02/2020 20:42

@Parker231

An egg, plain flour, milk and a pinch of salt? What are you missing?

Parker231 · 25/02/2020 20:44

DT’s are away at Uni and neither DH or I drink milk so only remember to get it when I need it for visitors. I rarely bake so don’t need flour. Ready made ones are easier.

glennamy · 25/02/2020 20:53

Kids get gruel and they better be grateful for it!
