To think if you don't give your kids pancakes

Tomorrow that is really mean!

Unless you never partake in pancake /shrove Tuesday,

If you do, and just 'can't be bothered' you're a mean mum/dad..

Have seen people who can perfectly afford it saying nah won't be bothered making kids any pancakes or giving them something sweet.

I’m not too lazy to make the effort but I don’t usually bother. I only “do” Christmas as my mum guilt trips me otherwise and I have a toddler now sooooo. I still get away with not putting any xmas decorations up. Might not for much longer though if I have to acquiesce for the sake on my child.
I’m not religious so feel a bit hypocritical doing pancakes (and xmas and Easter. It’s all commercialised twaddle now). I think I can get away not doing Easter this year again as well, but next year I’m guessing my child will have been indoctrinated into Easter as well. He’s usually not routinely given chocolate. In fact he still has a chocolate bunny he was given last year (despite not even being weaned!).

Emmelina · 25/02/2020 09:17

We do scotch pancakes and crepes quite regularly, so I’m trying something new this year just for a change!

Anyone planning on getting Shriven, then? :-)

Valkadin · 25/02/2020 09:20

I always make pancakes, when DS was at the school round the corner he used to bring his friends with him after school for pancakes. I cooked a hundred pancakes one shrove Tuesday, two pans on the go at once.

Damntheman · 25/02/2020 09:20

@SquashedFlyBiscuit don't want to risk DH going all killjoy "but it's not pancake day". Can't have that! :o

Straycatstrut · 25/02/2020 09:40

I absolutely LOVED pancake day as a kid. Lemon juice and sugar and having about 4 hot pancakes one after the other. One of my best memories.

I made mine them last year - loads of mix. Different toppings. They picked at them and pulled faces. My eldest gagged (he's extremely fussy with texture)

They'll eat the more crispy ones you put under the grill/toaster with the toppings all melty inside, so I'm getting some of them, different flavours cut up pizza style for their suppers after whatever I cook. They'll go wild for that Grin

RightOnTheEdge · 25/02/2020 09:43

*Are all these people scoffing pancakes also partaking in the traditional Lenten fast?

No. Because pancake day is fun and giving stuff up for lent is not. I'm happy to just do the traditions that appeal to me*

100% this Grin

When I was young my mum used to make scotch pancakes (or dropped scones) for us and I do sometimes for my dc.
Is there difference between a scotch pancake and an American pancake?
They seem like the same thing to me.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 25/02/2020 09:48

As I won't be observing lent it seems pretty pointless to me.

So no - no pancakes here tonight.

MyDcAreMarvel · 25/02/2020 09:55

DH has just asked how we me are going to manage cooking the pancakes tomorrow. So that's a family of four, 3 pancakes each, cooked individually and carried up two flights of stairs then?
We are not having pancakes.

@Seasonalanxiety just buy scotch pancakes and carry your toaster upstairs instead of making excuses for laziness.

Mia1415 · 25/02/2020 09:55

YABVU

No pancakes in this house. I'm not a massive fan of them and DS would say he didn't like them so it would be a complete waste of time and effort.

And I am far from a mean Mum!

Oh do fuck off. She's not refusing to feed them vegetables, she's expressing reluctance to cook entirely optional pancakes.

Shrieks in horror and runs from the thread 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Bagofoldbones · 25/02/2020 10:08

Pancake day, Easter, Halloween Christmas all me fuck all to me religiously as I don’t believe in God. But it’s just an another excuse to have a good time with your family.

Some people are proper mood hooveres 👎🏻

Yesterdayforgotten · 25/02/2020 10:17

I don't understand if parents dont like a good they stop there dc from having it. I dont like salmon but I cook it for my dc.

Yesterdayforgotten · 25/02/2020 10:17

a food *

WikkiTikkiWoo · 25/02/2020 10:20

Tuesdays are super super busy in our house.. so we'll be having pancake Wednesday instead of Tuesday.

It's not a case of "can't be bothered"!

LaurieMarlow · 25/02/2020 10:20

My kids are so stoked for their pancakes tonight. Pancake Tuesday is one of our favourite days.

CrocodileFondue · 25/02/2020 10:22

I thought it would be nice to have pancakes but DS said "No. I don't like pancakes." Sad

Tbh fair, he's never liked them in all his 3 years. I pointed out that they were basically the same thing as Yorkshire puddings which he loves but nope.

I guess I'm a mean parent for not making them anyway and forcing him to eat them, OP?

OneOfManyDays · 25/02/2020 10:25

Had no idea it was pancake day until Alexa announced it to me this morning. I won't be making DD any pancakes after school...I don't have stuff in to make them and cba to go out and buy it specially. DD probably has no clue its pancake day anyway. I don't feel bad about it or think this amounts to some form of child abuse! It's a flipping pancake for god sake - could have it any day of the year if we really wanted to!

FizzyIce · 25/02/2020 10:25

Sod lent! I just like pancakes !

DowntonCrabby · 25/02/2020 10:30
Grin This thread has made my pancake day.
FlamingFreezing · 25/02/2020 10:37

I must say I hate the thin crepe pancakes commonly found in the UK as do DC. I never had the thick American style ones until we moved to the US.

Just add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of baking powder/bicarbonate of soda to a basic pancake batter. You can add choc chips, sliced blueberries, mashed banana, cinnamon, orange/lemon zest etc, to the batter.

elp30 · 25/02/2020 10:47

@YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer

I'm from southeast Texas and it's a FANTASTIC time of Mardi Gras!

When I had my first "Shrove Tuesday" in England, back in 1996, I was totally perplexed at everyone having debates about the "best" pancake toppings. I was used to going to Galveston Island and going to the parades, throwing and catching colorful beads, drinking alcohol to excess, eating amazing Cajun food and dancing the night away and feeling a bit worse for wear at Catholic Church on Wednesday.

Pancakes? Pfft
