To think if you don't give your kids pancakes

Tomorrow that is really mean!

Unless you never partake in pancake /shrove Tuesday,

If you do, and just 'can't be bothered' you're a mean mum/dad..

Have seen people who can perfectly afford it saying nah won't be bothered making kids any pancakes or giving them something sweet.

@AmelieTaylor I’ve never heard anyone talk about it/seen anyone do it until this year for some reason. I just assumed it wasn’t a thing here. I was rather taken aback by all the stuff I’ve witnessed this year but then again I may have just been very unibservant in the past?

Shockers · 25/02/2020 11:02

My kids wouldn’t let us get away with no pancakes- they’re 19 and 21 Grin.

They make them these days though.

FizzyIce · 25/02/2020 11:03

@FlamingFreezing I’m the opposite , the thick pancakes are just too stodgy for me

mrsBtheparker · 25/02/2020 11:04

Children be blowed, seafood pancakes baked in a mild cheese sauce, delicious, thanks for the remonder! For pud maybe pancake with ice cream and warm chocolate sauce.

AmelieTaylor · 25/02/2020 11:41

@Reginabambina
🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m almost 50 (not sure how the fuck that happened so fast?!) and all my life our family has done it and all our family and friends (or should I say have known about it- some have occasionally wriggled out if doing it ‘because it’s a faff’ - it’s really not!!) but not one single family member or friend wouldn’t know about it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Schools have sometimes made them, drawn them (with favourite topping etc) talked about the reason for it originally but that it’s ok just to make them because you like them (in later years because of such mixed religions in the schools)

Plus, yeah all the shops with bulk flour, eggs, lemons, sugar on display!

No idea how you missed it all, but then I’m not terribly observant either, so there’s probably plenty I’ve missed 🤣

MrsStrangerThing · 25/02/2020 11:51

Meh, I do it if the kids ask, which they have this year. I have no interest in the religious side of it, but the kids see it as a treat - even though they don't ask for pancakes any other day of the year! I also made a chinese dish and fortune cookies at Chinese new year. Just a bit of fun but its daft to criticise people who don't do it. Its expensive to buy the ingredients and toppings if you don't already have stuff in and are on a tight budget.

Natsku · 25/02/2020 11:55

I can't be bothered to make them but I did make eggy bread with jam and whipped cream, that's enough for today.

IronShame · 25/02/2020 12:11

It's a pancake, not neglect.

Reginabambina · 25/02/2020 12:15

@AmelieTaylor the weird thing is that I work opposite a shop that sells pancakes and goes all out with their pancake day decorating (the reason I noticed this year). God only knows what else I missed.

Gadgnkk · 25/02/2020 12:36

Both kids have stuff after school today and loads of homework, so no, dinner is quick and eaten on the go today. We did pancake day a few days ago. With nice chunky American pancakes and toppings the kids chose. Everyone happy.

Wixi · 25/02/2020 12:56

We have never taken part in pancake day, and my DD10 does not even like pancakes.

GinDrinker00 · 25/02/2020 12:58

YABU. It’s a bloody pancake, hardly neglecting their needs. I bought pancakes for my DCs, Sod making them and getting stuck to the roof like last year. Angry

Roselilly36 · 25/02/2020 13:02

I always make pancakes for my DS’s, I can remember always asking my mum to make pancakes on pancake day when I was little, she never did. No matter how I feel I make pancakes for my boys.

luckylavender · 25/02/2020 13:03

Ridiculous post.

BrokenMumTeenDD · 25/02/2020 13:05

DD has a form of pancakes every morning for her breakfast (Oats & seeds) so she's really not bothered

AmelieTaylor · 25/02/2020 13:06

@Reginabambina. 🤣🤣. As I said, I’m massively unobservant, so we can ignore the world going by together ☕️😊😊

ImNotWhoYouThinkIam · 25/02/2020 13:06

Another one here who cant make pancakes. And I dont care how 'easy' they are. Mine never work. I can make the batter, just can't cook them. Also cant make omelettes Confused

DS1 can make some at the weekend if he wants.
And I am religious, although don't 'do' Lent. Or buy Easter eggs.

I'll add failure to do these things to my list of things that make me a shit Mum/woman/partner (maybe that's why I'm single) Grin

Hobbesmanc · 25/02/2020 13:10

awww I'd never judge anyone for not bothering but I remember it being a really special day when I was a kid- like Bonfire Night or Easter. My mum always had two pans on the go and we'd be queuing up to eat them hot and crisp from the pan with our fingers. Sugar and jif lemon for tradition- but jam or golden syrup were popular.

There would always be some pancake related event on John Craven- the worlds biggest pancake, or seventies big haired mothers racing through fields with hot pans.

We actually had ours Sunday due to work- sweet and savoury. They make great fajitas or enchiladas

Happy tossing

whiskeylullaby2 · 25/02/2020 13:19

i thought pancake day way last tuesday. Blush beautiful spread of pancakes and a million toppings. feeling very smug, until my mum told me i have the wrong week!!

my children hated them, and just ate the toppings. I really wont be bothering today Grin

Fink · 25/02/2020 13:21

I don't think it's a big deal if you have them at other times, particularly if you're not doing Lent.

We rarely have pancakes except on Shrove Tuesday (possibly twice a year, maximum) and we are practising Catholics so we're giving stuff up for Lent and this will be our last sugar rush before the fast. So yes, we doubly love pancake day. But if you're not religious and can have pancakes any time, I can't see what's so important about the day before a religious celebration you don't partake in.

Strugglingtodomybest · 25/02/2020 13:48

We have pancakes regularly, so I may or may not make them tonight. The kids are free to make their own if they really want some too.

Parsley65 · 25/02/2020 13:56

We're not at all religious, but that doesn't stop us loving pancakes, Easter eggs and a big, fat roast dinner at Christmas as well as lots of traditional events like bonfire night.

Some real killjoys giving religion a bad name on here today 🙄

Lighten up.

Oh, and we just have pancakes for the whole meal: savoury, sweet, whatever you want. I'm looking forward to it!

lazylinguist · 25/02/2020 13:56

YABU.
Have seen people who can perfectly afford it saying nah won't be bothered making kids any pancakes or giving them something sweet.

Surely the vast majority of children get 'something sweet' very regularly. We have pancakes pretty often too, so there's nothing particularly special about them tbh. Surely affording it isn't an issue- pancakes are very very cheap to make!

BeyondMyWits · 25/02/2020 14:09

@SwearyMcSwearySwear

BeyondMyWits - so you don’t do anything for Xmas or Easter either Your house sounds fun

My house is fun - we have winter and spring feasting and excess like lots of people in the world. Would not find Lent to be much fun to be honest - fasting for 40 days... or tomorrow having ashes smeared on your forehead, or do you pick and choose your religious festivals too...

We have pancakes whenever we want - like most people.

Bagofoldbones · 25/02/2020 14:13

BeyondMyWits

So you celebrate/feast spring = Easter

Celebrate/feast winter = Christmas

Grin

Definitely no fasting for 40 days or forehead ashing here!
