To be worried about coronavirus part 4

idontusuallypanic · 24/02/2020 12:40

I looked and couldn't see another 4th thread.

I'm personally worried this morning as I've heard that two students ds goes to school with have just returned from Milan where cases have just rocketed.

OP posts:
LarkDescending · 24/02/2020 23:52

A bit more on remdesivir from CNN.

NcFortuna · 25/02/2020 04:05

The cynic in me feels that the UK government will only list Italy as a potential risk on Tuesday because they want the majority of Brits returning from half term hols to already be back in the country.

No need to bother with all that costly expensive testing and paying for quarantine and staff wages. Keep calm and carry on!

jimmychooing · 25/02/2020 04:31

My boss arrived back from a month long trip to Malaysia and Indonesia yesterday, after multiple flight transfers. I'm due to meet her today and I'm considering cancelling - too much? Too soon? I'm more worried about passing anything on to vulnerable family members

HasaDigaEebowai · 25/02/2020 05:56

I think the government have been slow to add Italy and this could have serious consequences. At my DCs school for example a large group of teachers and pupils were at school yesterday returning from their half term ski trip in Italy (they cam back sunday). There's no way that in a group that size nobody has a cough, sore throat etc. So that's a day of potentially infecting many other people.

At least italy is added now though.

HasaDigaEebowai · 25/02/2020 05:57

I am going to be that parent contacting school this morning to ask its position.

KoalasandRabbit · 25/02/2020 06:10

Three of DDs friends have just been on school Italian ski trip though think Piedmont isn't in government advice which is where they weren't. On their school's twitter several mentions of ill children which is probably normal colds etc but if it gets into a UK school could spread quickly. Crazy not to have advice out a earlier, wondering if Dominic Cummings is incharge of response.

WaterSheep · 25/02/2020 07:24

So from tomorrow I assume if you telephone 111 you'd be taken seriously and might get tested. But not today cos officials were too busy working out the difference between arses and elbows...

Absolutely bonkers. It might only be one day, but that's 24 hours where it's been allowed to freely spread: in shops, schools, workplaces, public transport.

There's no way it's not in the UK at this point.

Ciwirocks · 25/02/2020 07:27

I can’t see that the advice has changed to include Italy yet. I have family returning from Milan later but as far as I can see that’s not one of the affected areas so far. It’s only a matter of time before we have a cluster here now, very worrying.

Matt Hancock on BBC shortly to discuss questions about coronavirus

Matt Hancock on BBC shortly to discuss questions about coronavirus

Predictions

We're well prepared
No need to panic

Anyone else want to guess what other bullshit he will come out with? Hmm

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 07:34

Matt Hancock won't say anything other than:
"We are low risk"
"The NHS is prepared"

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 07:36

Maybe Hancock will mention Italy?

HasaDigaEebowai · 25/02/2020 07:37

He's just confirmed. Come back from northern Italy with symptoms you need to self isolate.

HasaDigaEebowai · 25/02/2020 07:37

site being updated at 8am this morning.

RedToothBrush · 25/02/2020 07:39

1000 guests at hotel in Tenerife are quarantined due to the Italian doctor...

WaterSheep · 25/02/2020 07:43

Matt Hancock

"By Pandemic I mean it spreads all over the world"

"We're not sure it will become a pandemic"

I know it's early but... Confused

RedToothBrush · 25/02/2020 07:43

Rebecca Keating @rebeccakeating
Health Secretary Matt Hancock says people who have been to northern Italy (north of Pisa) should self-isolate if they have have symptoms of #coronavirus. If they have been to the quarantined areas, they should self-isolate regardless. #BBCBreakfast

But Matt Hancock says the government is not aware of any Briton in the quarantine zone in northern Italy. #coronavirus #BBCBreakfast

Cos Matt Hancock has special superhero powers and knows where all brits are and this is nothing to do with the travel advice fobbing off any brit who might be in that situation.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 07:46

Thank god the advice is changing. Hopefully 111 will update now.
I do worry that this advice doesn't get spread to everyone though. What if you don't watch TV or read the papers? How would you know? Most of my family have no idea about coronavirus risk.

RedToothBrush · 25/02/2020 07:49

I think loads of people won't have the news on and will turn up at school / work as usual tbh...

But don't worry

Matt Hancock knows where you live and where you went on holiday. So it's all going to be juuuuusssstttt finnnnnnneeeee.

HasaDigaEebowai · 25/02/2020 07:53

I watched it and he said the website and official advice will be updated at 8am

BrokenBrit · 25/02/2020 07:53

God hopefully can now get some proper advice for DF today. He is still self isolating of course and is about the same as yesterday.
For those not following he returned from N Italy at the weekend and now has a dry cough, mild fever and severe flu symptoms - 111 advised yesterday Italy wasn’t on their list so they didn’t have any advice Confused.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 07:53

NOW: Kuwait confirms 3 new cases, total of 8 t.co/eUoE2b20hL

HasaDigaEebowai · 25/02/2020 07:54

To be fair I think he meant they were not aware of anyone British in the 10 towns that are under official lockdown. Obviously there are thousands of British people who've been in Northern Italy

meredithgrey1 · 25/02/2020 07:57

I think loads of people won't have the news on and will turn up at school / work as usual tbh...

I think that while there is still a general sense that anyone worrying about this is being a bit "hysterical", even some people who've seen the news won't necessarily pay attention. If you've just come back from half term and you're child now has mild symptoms, how understanding are employers going to be to you taking time off so you can keep them off school?

WaterSheep · 25/02/2020 07:58

I think loads of people won't have the news on and will turn up at school / work as usual tbh...

Oh definitely. There will be plenty already on their way or currently at work who could easily have missed this update.
