I looked and couldn't see another 4th thread.

I'm personally worried this morning as I've heard that two students ds goes to school with have just returned from Milan where cases have just rocketed.

OP posts:

*In France, the government urged anyone who has visited Lombardy or Veneto – the two most affected regions in Italy – to wear face masks if they go outside, limit non-essential activities and take their temperatures twice a day.

The French health ministry issued the same advice for anyone who had traveled to China, South Korea, Singapore or Macao. France has had 12 cases of the virus overall, and one death*

Why doesn’t the U.K. advise the same??

I agree, our government is really failing to face up to this.

okiedokieme · 24/02/2020 17:28

Whilst it is obviously worrying for those who have caught it - please have perspective - nobody knows the true infection rate as those with mild cases may not have been tested as they haven't come to the attention of health care authorities. 200 cases in northern Italy, with 5 deaths all with preexisting conditions is similar to flu. Take precautions but don't overly worry. I flew through the Middle East so I'm being careful not to share glasses etc with my family

Canada reports 1 new case of coronavirus in B,C. t.co/eUoE2b20hL

BrokenBrit · 24/02/2020 17:37

So to update everyone on DF.
He did ring 111 as he has developed a frequent and dry cough on top of his flu symptoms.
They said Italy isn’t on their advice list so they couldn’t help and said to continue to watch for further updates?!!

Mittens030869 · 24/02/2020 17:40

@okiedokieme

I hear what you're saying. Most people don't realise how dangerous flu can be; I only really understood this this myself last year when a very bad bout of flu turned into pneumonia and I was nearly hospitalised.

But there's a flu jab available, and the medical profession understands it, as it's been around for a long time. That isn't the case with coronavirus, no one really knows enough about it as yet to know how much damage it can cause.

KoalasandRabbit · 24/02/2020 17:40

That seems silly Italy isn't on their list when countries with less infected are on it. Would be surprised if its changes and NHS are just being slow.

KoalasandRabbit · 24/02/2020 17:42

Wouldn't

ofwarren · 24/02/2020 17:44

Omg @BrokenBrit! That is exactly why it's important they update the info!

ofwarren · 24/02/2020 17:47

NEW: Another 18 Americans who were passengers on the Diamond Princess cruise ship test positive for coronavirus after being evacuated to the U.S.; they are all in quarantine t.co/eUoE2b20hL

GorkyMcPorky · 24/02/2020 17:47

They said Italy isn’t on their advice list so they couldn’t help and said to continue to watch for further updates?!!

How bloody ridiculous. PHE is not fit for purpose if it can't keep up with, never mind ahead of developments.

ConstancetheGardener · 24/02/2020 17:51

DD is booked to go to Venice next week on a package break .Airport hotel, train to airport and day trips in Venice are all paid for and hotel/train is non refundable . She is 28 and a grown up ! but I am really worried about her going . As the FO has not issued any adverse travel advice (yet) for Venice what is she supposed to do as she will be very out of pocket if she cancels and presumably her travel insurance won't cover it . She lives with us so although she may not be too badly affected IF she caught it I have asthma and had pneumonia twice in the last two years so am very at risk . I don't know what to advise her to do - any advice/thoughts gratefully received.

meredithgrey1 · 24/02/2020 17:53

They said Italy isn’t on their advice list so they couldn’t help and said to continue to watch for further updates?!!

How very "computer says no" of them.

I'm not blaming the individual call handler, (they presumably have a set of yes/no questions and it Italy isn't listed then it isn't listed) but the rigidity and slowness of the system as a whole.

Glittercandle · 24/02/2020 17:54

Broken that’s so unhelpful!

AvocadoOwl · 24/02/2020 18:03

A lot can change in a week @ConstancetheGardener. I'd sit tight for now and make a decision nearer the time. If things worsen enough to validate an insurance claim then no money lost and if they don't then you can decide up to the last minute as the money will be gone either way.

I really feel for those with holidays booked in places which are clearly unsafe but not unsafe enough to satisfy insurers. I think I'd sooner write the money off than take risks that I wasn't comfortable with.

KoalasandRabbit · 24/02/2020 18:05

Constance Look up terms of her travel insurance but ours covers if FCO advice don't travel 48 hours before departure otherwise won't help. Sometimes insurance covers medical reasons but usually not pre-existing. I don't think credit cards cover either, most people seem to be trying to get refunds even if non-refundable and some get them and if not have lost money. We have same issue with summer holiday, got £2.4k non-refundable. In future am booking fully refundable things where possible.

Seventh person dies in coronavirus outbreak in Italy: ANSA news agency

KoalasandRabbit · 24/02/2020 18:08

It can be worth waiting, saw one couple cancelled a cruise to Asia, cruise refused to refund though airline did in full, week later cruise cancelled. It's quite fast moving in Italy though could try for refund and if say no wait it out.

nibdedibble · 24/02/2020 18:12

Went out today, couple of meetings and public transport. Felt like I’d worn myself out. (Unrealistic.) Can’t get warm now and nose is running.

LOGICALLY I know I’m fine/got a sniffle. It doesn’t half get to you though, all this detailed minute-by-minute analysis. Confused

KoalasandRabbit · 24/02/2020 18:21

BBC says Ireland has advised against travel to affected regions on Italy and says FCO has updated its Italy advice, says very little just follow local advice.

NaturalBornWoman · 24/02/2020 18:22

Just saw an update on BBC news. It's all fine, flu is a far bigger threat! Hmm

NathanNathan · 24/02/2020 18:23

I'm a sceptic at the best of times, but I really don't feel like the government are taking this seriously enough or providing enough information when so many others are.

Why haven't they updated the advice to include Italy??

I get they are trying not panic people but it just seems stupid.

BrokenBrit · 24/02/2020 18:35

I am shocked at the lack of help from PHE and am worried about DF being alone, I am beginning to think our advice is being deliberately not updated to avoid panic/ economic issues/ I don’t really know why.
But to not test people coming back from N. Italy with symptoms of it seems crazy.
I wish I was closer/ he would let me visit, but I know that wouldn’t be a good idea.
Or government maybe doesn’t want the numbers going up? After all if you don’t test people you don’t diagnose them so UK case numbers will be low, right Hmm.

yolofish · 24/02/2020 18:36

Everything xd for those of you who are experiencing real difficulties with this at the moment.

PP on previous thread asked after DD1 in an alpine village - she seems to be fine as managing to meet a friend for apres tonight, and did actually get some sleep last night with effective french meds.
