I looked and couldn't see another 4th thread.

I'm personally worried this morning as I've heard that two students ds goes to school with have just returned from Milan where cases have just rocketed.

Penair School in #Truro says it's sent home all children and staff who attended a ski trip, to self-quarantine for 14 days over #coronavirus fears. #HeartNews t.co/o906Q2y9vr

Did they start back at school today or were they all in school yesterday?

HasaDigaEebowai · 25/02/2020 10:52

An employer can never force anyone to work. They can potentially sack them if they don't work and if the employee has qualifying service they can potentially bring a claim about that and may (depending on the circumstances) be successful.

An employer can't be forced to pay an employee in full if they are self isolating unless they are signed off as sick and have a contractual right to full pay during sickness absence (in which case they would in most circumstances have a breach of contract/unlawful deductions case if they were not paid).

WaterSheep · 25/02/2020 10:53

Perhaps that will happen if matters develop in the UK to the point where it becomes a big problem.

Without wanting to sound all doom and gloom, surely if it gets to that point it would only help for future pandemics. As the spread of Covid19 would be beyond the point of benefiting from emergency measures.

WaterSheep · 25/02/2020 10:55

Did they start back at school today or were they all in school yesterday?

Spring Term 2020 (55 days) 6th January - 27th March. (Half Term 17th - 21st February)

Seems like the school re-opened yesterday after half term

Skyejuly · 25/02/2020 10:57

I think I would have to isolate us all. We do have a loft room with bathroom but I imagine we would all get it anyway!

Our school also had a Italy trip. Mine didn't go but have been at schop now so Confused

ACAS guidance for employers and employees.

woodencoffeetable · 25/02/2020 10:57

there probably is something about self isolation & employment in the pandemic preparedness dossier.

FourTeaFallOut · 25/02/2020 11:00

Great Hmm

Carryonnursie · 25/02/2020 11:02

The school teachers opened yesterday. Some teachers and pupils that went skiing came in to school went home shortly after. The school have been very open about it and were allowing children to be collected through out the day.

FourTeaFallOut · 25/02/2020 11:04

We can easily isolate one room with an en-suite and then seal them in Wuhan style contain them but obviously that's only going to be useful if they can be isolated before they become infectious...so, if they become a known contact and caught early I suppose but given the speed at which the tests are talking I can't imagine there's much chance of that.

Mittens030869 · 25/02/2020 11:06

I know that the law is limited on unfair dismissal. But chances are that some of these employees have been there for longer than 2 years. And if it's all about profit, this employer won't want to incur legal costs to contest several cases of this kind.

Another option is to name and shame in the media.

But ultimately there needs to be legislation on this. But I have an awful fear that it will be a case of closing the stable door after the horse has bolted.

copperstrike76 · 25/02/2020 11:12

My boss went to northern Italy at half term (and he saw people in face masks as they were close to the affected region). We don't work in the same office but a colleague (who I see regularly - we have kids in the same school) has an in-person meeting with him next week. I'm a bit worried about that. Also, my DH is going to the 6 Music festival in London in a couple of weeks. I expect I am being unreasonable to worry about it but I really wish he wasn't going!

FloatingCloudz · 25/02/2020 11:16

An employer can never force anyone to work
But they can threaten to sack them if they don’t. Most people can’t afford to lose their jobs, they have bills to pay and families to support.

An employer can't be forced to pay an employee in full if they are self isolating unless they are signed off as sick and have a contractual right to full pay during sickness absence
Then you can fully expect people who won’t get sick pay to refuse to self isolate because they can’t afford to lose the money.

A patient has finally tested positive for the #coronavirus after being previously tested as negative 8 times. The patient is being treated in a hospital in Anyue county, Sichuan province. #COVID19 t.co/GkYzHOGOik

  1. Yes I said that
  1. That assumes employers are short sighted and want their entire workforce to go down. I've advised various clients on this already and without exception so far they're all willing to treat it in the same way as sick leave (but without impacting the sickness record) if it's verified that the employee should be self isolating due to the government guidelines. Yes you will get some poor employers but most are more worried about large scale infection closing down their entire businesses.

Schools & universities in #Kirkuk #Iraq will be closed for 15 days due to #Coronavirius with ban on public gatherings during this period

Knockalockin · 25/02/2020 11:23

Hi.

Sorry I haven't rtft, just having a think about what to do.

Like a lot of other children, my DD went to northern Italy skiing over half term. Came back Sunday and has been off school since.

Bit of a cough snivels, runs, stomach ache. No fever or chest complaints. Probably just run down from the trip.

If feels a bit overkill to self isolate as she's not particularly ill. I'll ring the school and 111 for advice, but anyone had a similar situation? What about the rest of us if he does self isolate, do we all?

HasaDigaEebowai · 25/02/2020 11:24

knockalockin that is a situation where you should be notifying 111

GrapefruitGin · 25/02/2020 11:27

I’m cabin crew, have been concerned since the outbreak but more so in recent days my worries have increased - we’ve made a few changes to help protect ourselves but I have a really strong urge not to keep flying at the moment. I’m not sure what to do.

SlayB · 25/02/2020 11:32

It can manifest as d/v in some people without a cough. It is very wise that people who may have other symptoms but not a cough know this.

KoalasandRabbit · 25/02/2020 11:33

I would call 111 and hopefully they will do a coronavirus test - those are the symptoms and it starts off mild. It's very probably not it but at the start it is same symptoms as cold / flu and can start with stomach bug. If she's positive you'll almost certainly need to all self-isolate, other scenarios ask NHS, would have thought if negative you won't. Hope she's fine and gets better soon. Think there's lots in same situation.

HasaDigaEebowai · 25/02/2020 11:35

If you look on the worldometers website there is a useful section that lists symptoms. Its interesting that different countries list different key symptoms. The UK government doesn't for example list a sore throat as a key symptom to watch out for but it's a common one and other governments have been highlighting it. Similarly muscle ache and general fatigue.

KoalasandRabbit · 25/02/2020 11:36

I watched David Abel and wife, both seemed to have a cough, no temp and just he had a bad stomach before tested positive. Not obvious at all.

eeeyoresmiles · 25/02/2020 11:40

If your child has diarrhoea she should be off school anyway, but yes she should stay off based on where she's been, too, and you should ring 111.

Being "not particularly ill" is irrelevant right now, because we know lots of cases of cv can be mild but 20% can be severe. She won't be passing on a milder version just because she's not badly affected herself, if that's what she's got. She'll be passing on the same potentially deadly virus regardless of how ill it made her personally.

If she came from near the locked down area then I think the rest of you should be preparing to stay at home too, like any other potentially exposed people. You're in the same position as someone whose family member might have travelled back from Wuhan three weeks ago and then showed symptoms, and it would have been a no-brainer to keep the whole family out of circulation for a while then. That bit of Northern Italy is a mini Wuhan on our doorstep now.

I hope she feels better soon and the rest of you can avoid it.
