To worry about a sore throat?

JustWearThePants · 18/02/2020 20:05

I'm probably being ridiculous but in all my life I've never had a sore throat like this before.

I have absolutely no other symptoms, no cough, no runny nose, no fever etc...

I started with a sore dry throat a few nights ago and now I feel like my entire throat is swollen although it doesn't look it from the outside. Whenever I swallow it's as if there's a massive lump in my throat which is throbbing and sore.

I've been having to sleep upright pretty much as it's either very painful or impossible to swallow when I'm lay flat.

I feel fine in myself otherwise. Would this concern you? I've had dry sore throats before of course but I've never felt it tight and swollen like it feels now.

I would ask a pharmacist for advice, or a doctor. Only because it's affecting you to the level you're sleeping upright, and difficulty swallowing seems like it should be checked out.

GenevaMaybe · 18/02/2020 20:08

Have you looked inside with an torch or the light on your phone?

Bubblemonkey · 18/02/2020 20:09

If you’ve got pus on your throat, I’m willing to bet tonsillitis

dalmatianmad · 18/02/2020 20:10

Are you swallowing your saliva?
If its causing an airway issue you need to make sure you don't have a quinsy Confused

JustWearThePants · 18/02/2020 20:14

I've looked as much as I can but there's no pus/white spots or anything.

Even when I just move my head up and down I can feel the lump it's as if there actually is a literal lump in my throat.

I'm just swallowing saliva, I seem to keep swallowing more than usual but I find it hard. I'm not struggling breathing or anything. It's just swallowing. Including food etc...

I may drop into the pharmacy tomorrow.

Oh and I did have a little panic as I was on a flight recently (not from China!) But I've heard of all sorts being passed around on planes.

Definitely go to the pharmacy. Best place for first port of call for this kind of thing...

I know you said you hadn't been to China but I'm just checking you also weren't coming from Thailand, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, etc either?

Alyic · 18/02/2020 20:19

I had a sore throat for 5 years, the only time I was ok when I was on antibiotics.

It was a nightmare trying to convince drs to remove my tonsils, eventually they did, I've never had a sore throat since.

The reason they didn't want to remove them was I was too old, I was 32 !!

Drum2018 · 18/02/2020 20:19

I'd be going to the gp if I were you.

JustWearThePants · 18/02/2020 20:20

Wheres, no none of those or anywhere near. It was a European city.

I had the most awful sore throat recently and I was off work for 6 days and on antibiotics for 15 days. It was the most pain I have ever been in and I felt like I had a lump and it was so painful to swallow. I did have a raging temp.

I had my tonsils removed when I was 8 so it wasn't them!

Elliesmommy · 18/02/2020 20:23

I had the exact symptoms you describe last year. it was Quincy. The pain was unbearable. Even painkillers didnt work. My abscess burst luckily otherwise they were going to lance it. I was hospitalised. Please get yourself checked out. They can do a scan on your neck to see if its quincy

Elliesmommy · 18/02/2020 20:24

Quincy - Quinsy. Sorry auto correct

JustWearThePants · 18/02/2020 20:24

Thanks. I've taken my temperature and it's normal at the moment. As I say I don't feel unwell other than a really painful swollen throat!

Could something like Quincy manifest with no other symptoms/fever? I feel completely normal other than this, not lethargic etc...

OP posts:
JustWearThePants · 18/02/2020 20:25

Quinsy*

wheresmymojo · 18/02/2020 20:28

How coincidentally weird - this is the second thread I've read in 2 mins that mentions Quinsy (having never heard of it before). I'm going to have to google it now!

Elliesmommy · 18/02/2020 20:30

I had no temp either. But the pain. I will never forget the pain.

JustWearThePants · 18/02/2020 20:32

Okay I'll either go to pharmacy or ring GP in the morning. I've not been able to eat my tea tonight it was that sore. That's not like me!

I would see your gp, my dh had similar symptoms it was some sort of ongoing reflux. Tablets sorted it.

Evilspiritgin · 18/02/2020 20:39

I Once when I was living in the us has strep throat, that was the most painful throat I’ve ever had.

Hope you feel better soon op

Itwasntme1 · 18/02/2020 20:49

I had a persistent cough for three weeks, went to see the chemist on so day and they wouldn’t sell me anything, told me to go to out of hours doctor.

Got a doctors appointment this morning and have antibiotics. Chemist is a good place for advice but it sounds like you need a doctor

lilgreen · 18/02/2020 20:55

DD 19 recently had tonsillitis. Extremely sore throat, neck glands bulging, pus on tonsils and felt rubbish. Antibiotics x2 courses sorted it.

Welshmaenad · 18/02/2020 20:58

Please go to a doctor. I had this - it was strep throat and now exH told me not to go to the dentist for antibiotics as I was just being a baby.

I developed rheumatic fever which triggered an autoimmune disease and am now significantly disabled.

Get seen, get abx if you need them.

JustWearThePants · 18/02/2020 21:00

DH just got his phone torch right in there... He said it looks quite closed up and swollen to him but definitely no pus that he can see. The lump feels quite low down in my throat. Like just where you'd expect an Adams apple to me (in a bloke obviously Grin )

I'll ring GP tomorrow and see if they'll see me.
