To worry about a sore throat?

I'm probably being ridiculous but in all my life I've never had a sore throat like this before.

I have absolutely no other symptoms, no cough, no runny nose, no fever etc...

I started with a sore dry throat a few nights ago and now I feel like my entire throat is swollen although it doesn't look it from the outside. Whenever I swallow it's as if there's a massive lump in my throat which is throbbing and sore.

I've been having to sleep upright pretty much as it's either very painful or impossible to swallow when I'm lay flat.

I feel fine in myself otherwise. Would this concern you? I've had dry sore throats before of course but I've never felt it tight and swollen like it feels now.

It just seems to have come on so quickly as well. I was sat watching TV and literally one minute I was fine and the next I had a sore throat. I can't usually pinpoint the minute it started but I could with this.

Then over the next couple of days it's gotten more swollen/sore.

I'll Google some of these as well before ringing the GP in the morning so I can ask.

Are your glands swollen? Check around under your jaw edge and behind your ears. You might have a troublesome gland blockage

keepingbees · 18/02/2020 21:06

Viral tonsillitis won't give you pus spots but can be very painful. Try gargling with salt water or aspirin dissolved in water.

Welshmaenad Gosh that sounds awful Flowers

I've never had tonsillitis before that I know of so admittedly I wouldn't know what it feels like so I couldn't rule that out.

I think my glands do seem a bit swollen to touch but not hugely so.

Sounds possibly like strep throat after reading. It says it often comes on quickly and has no other cold symptoms with it which is definitely what's going on with me. I'll definitely ring the GP tomorrow.

If you don't have a fever and feel well it's very unlikely to be tonsillitis or quinsy but visit the pharmacist and they can advise further. Often I get a sore throat a day or two before a nasty cold. I wouldn't be concerned enough to do anything tonight if you feel otherwise well though

shas19 · 18/02/2020 21:35

My partner had this a while back. Turns out he had ulcers in his throat!

JoyTurner · 18/02/2020 21:40

I’ve just had this exact same throat issue OP, it was tonsillitis in my case. But I did have other symptoms as well.
Hope you feel better soon!

Ilovewhippets · 18/02/2020 21:45

I can remember a sore throat I had 20 years ago as it was the most painful thing I’ve ever suffered including a broken arm.
I would go and see the doctor as it may need antibiotics and he/she may be give you something to help the pain.
Poor you!

ferretface · 18/02/2020 22:14

I had something similar to this at the end of January, it was viral rather than bacterial tonsillitis but the sore throat was the first sign. I found it hard to swallow with it. If you can't get any of the local anaesthetic sprays then honey and lemon mixture does help moisten it a bit, lemsip also, just be careful with the amount of paracetamol. I was maxed out on paracetamol and aspirin and still couldn't sleep for the pain!

Glitterblue · 18/02/2020 22:19

My daughter has had a very similar sounding sore throat. We had her at out of hours at the weekend because she couldn't even sip water, the pain was unbearable and she felt it was so swollen inside. She said it's far worse than when she had tonsillitis. The Dr said keep and eye out for a rash and a red tongue over the next few days as it could be scarlet fever but could just be viral. His face totally said he thought scarlet fever. Sure enough, when she was in the bath tonight she called me through because she'd found a rash on her tummy and chest and it's on her back too, and her tongue has gone bright red. Back to get seen again tomorrow, not sure where to go though as the Dr said if anything appeared yesterday take her back there but I don't know if we should go to the gp or back to the hospital, it feels a bit wrong going to the hospital but it's a small town and they do just see people straight away in there.

lilgreen · 18/02/2020 22:19

I found Tyrozets useful as they contain antibiotic and anaesthetic though probably need paracetamol too.

ineedaholidaynow · 18/02/2020 22:26

Don't you need antibiotics as soon as possible for scarlet fever?

Whatafustercluck · 18/02/2020 22:31

Highly unlikely to be tonsillitis - either viral or bacterial - without fever. I've had both kinds several times and the only giveaway symptom other than excruciating throat pain (and sounding like cotton wool was stuffed in my mouth) was fever and chills.

Youngatheart00 · 18/02/2020 22:33

Ask your pharmacist for an antiseptic numbing throat spray - can’t remember the name I’m afraid but it really works wonders. Tyrozets are a close second but as they’re lozenges they don’t get quite to the root of the pain in the same way the throat spray does.

Really123456 · 18/02/2020 22:36

Try the newest brand of strepsils. I'm starting to wonder if colds/coughs etc are bred by by Pharma to sell their latest stuff. Tbh I've had what you've had, it's crap but the newest brands of stuff work every time.

LemonTT · 18/02/2020 22:36

I had those symptoms with strep. Years ago. Bloody awful till I got treatment with GP. Don’t dilly dally with chemist.

Antibiotics sorted it out in days and it just became a spectacular hoarse voice. It was all one symptom and very little discomfort after that.

A few years later my now ex got it and went through the same thing. He did however max out a two week sick note with day trips around town. But I was wise to his man flu behaviour.

QueenOfPain · 18/02/2020 22:38

See the GP.

Not to alarm you but it could be epiglottitis, which is very serious, although usually presents with very rapid onset.

ABC123whatever · 18/02/2020 22:40

I doubt it would be tonsillitis without a fever. Don’t get me wrong, tonsillitis is horrendous but it’s usually accompanied by a fever - my temp was 40 degrees when I had it.

I’d go to out of hours.

ChilliesAndSpice · 19/02/2020 00:13

I had a severe sore throat 4 weeks ago. It was like swallowing glass, I have never had anything so painful before. I was alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen every 2 hours but still in pain. The pharmacy gave me ibuprofen with codeine which only had minimal effect.

I had no fever but felt very weak and slept a lot. After the sore throat went I developed an awful cough >>>>TMI

nimsem2 · 19/02/2020 00:45

I have had a sore throat for over 2 months. The front of my neck and glands are very sore. My doctor is sending me for a tube up my nose into my throat. I am on a 2 week wait and worried sick.

lborgia · 19/02/2020 03:03

Agree that my experienced sounds similar and I ended up in hospital on drips for 5 days.

Don't ignore.

Holdencaulfieldshomeboy · 19/02/2020 20:04

How are you doing OP?

NAFScamander · 19/02/2020 20:08

I could have written this post!!!! I’ve just been googling extremely painful sore throat. I’m going to book an appointment at the docs first thing tomorrow. The only time I’ve had a sore thrust this badly was when I had hand foot and mouth. Hope you saw a doctor today xx
