Up to 155 cases in Italy now.

Suggests it's been around for a while.

Jenasaurus · 23/02/2020 18:49

Googling the virus latest updates I stumbled across this survivalist forum, they are talking about prepping for the pandemic with items like pistols and razor wire to stop their neighbours taking their supplies in the event of a lock down caused by a Pandemic, there is talk of home schooling their children and boarding up windows, is this just an overreaction?

Yes

Thats a bonkers US site though jena. We're a little more rational..

US has a problem...

Michael Mina @michaelmina_lab
Reminder: As of today (Feb 23), the US remains extremely limited in #COVID19 testing. Only 3 of ~100 public health labs have @CDC test kits working and CDC is not sharing what went wrong with the kits. How to know if COVID19 is spreading here if we are not looking for it. 1/7

Now >10 days since CDC recalled kits w still no explanation for failure. Failure to share what went wrong hinders progress by all labs nationwide. Expeditious sharing of information is a must during epidemics. We say this to China and CDC should practice as well. 2/7 ...

Without more information, public health labs & well resourced hospital labs setting up CDC published assay in-house are held at complete standstill, unable to prepare for what will inevitably be concern for local transmission. 3/7 ....

Without rapid diagnostics ready to go, healthcare infrastructure may become rapidly inundated, even if cases turn out all negative - an abundance of caution will require quarantines until test rules out a case. Any backlog can quickly hamper hospitals. 4/7...

Additionally, recommendations for testing continue to tie in to recent travel to China or some contact. With cases in at least 28 countries, and local transmission increasing, testing and surveillance nationally must move forward. 5/7 ...

We cannot know if there is coronavirus here in US if we are not testing. We must get the US up to speed for diagnostics and we need expeditious information sharing from @CDC to the lab testing community here and abroad. 6/7 ...

For a country with arguably the greatest resources - we are far behind in our surveillance efforts. Now that China has bought us some time w stringent quarantines, we should be using it wisely - beginning with an ability to properly diagnose cases if and when they come in. 7/7

As someone responsible for overseeing virology diagnostics at our hospital @harvardmed @BrighamWomens - the need for clarity and quick turnaround is paramount to keep the hospital running smoothly in event of local transmission. So far, process from CDC leaves much to be desired

At least this report is encouraging...

White House to ask Congress for emergency coronavirus funding
However, the amount could be significantly lower than some public health officials have argued is necessary.

Number is up to four public health labs. Here is some good coverage of this issue from @politico @davidalim.

Problems with CDC coronavirus test delay expanded U.S. screening

Problems with CDC coronavirus test delay expanded U.S. screening
The delay could impede the U.S. government’s ability to detect scattered cases before they snowball into larger outbreaks.

I bet if we had guns like the US we'd be bonkers. Thankfully we have narwhale tusks instead.

I hope they start the clock again on the quarantined people in Arrow Park.

NemophilistRebel · 23/02/2020 19:05

I’m starting to worry just about going to the airport and being on a plane.
27 weeks pregnant and with a 3 year old all the recent increase in cases in Italy seems like its out of control with people travelling between places right now

Jenasaurus · 23/02/2020 19:06

So no need to stock up on a months supply of loo rolls just yet :)

ChipotleBlessing · 23/02/2020 19:06

COV19 is trending number 1 in Italy. It’s easy to change your preferences to check this before spreading conspiracy theories.

I've seen several different variations of tags or words relating to coronavirus trending all day.

I have no idea why people think it's not!!!

Jenasaurus · 23/02/2020 19:09

I got excited for a minute..."new antivurus update" flashed up on my notifications...just realised it was about my PC health and not a reference to finding a cure for Covid-19

runninguphills · 23/02/2020 19:14

I'm actually thinking - is it just me? (and most of you lot on this thread). No-one else appears to be that concerned in real life or the media.

I've been watching the stats closely, it's obvious that Covid-19 has gone up another level in the last couple of days. There has been a huge number of UK residents travelling recently to Italy, either for Ski holidays (with mainland Italians also on holiday) or the very recent descent in Rome of Scottish and Italians for the Rugby game.

I think it's impossible that this isn't going to get much worse.

I'm neither a worrier or a prepper but even I am going to Aldi's to stock up tomorrow.

Grasspigeons · 23/02/2020 19:22

I've just had an ad on facebook from the NHS about how to stop the spread of the virus .
Thats a first for me. I've heard radio ads about not over using antibiotics before and seen public health posters on norovirus.

Seventyone72seventy3 · 23/02/2020 19:24

Rome isn't anywhere near the outbreak though and most Italians aren't on holiday!

HuntedUp · 23/02/2020 19:27

@runninguphills I agree. Even dh who is always up on current affairs doesn’t seem too concerned. I’ve no doubt there’s clusters in this country who aren’t getting tested as they haven’t been to Wuhan recently. Which is what happened in Italy

PotholeParadise · 23/02/2020 19:30

I had that yesterday I think.

HuntedUp · 23/02/2020 19:30

I was out with friends earlier for tea and dc and I used hand sanitizer before eating. Offered to friends and they refused. Saying they don’t bother. These friends also ignore the 48 d&v rule because “everyone does”

runninguphills · 23/02/2020 19:31

Seventyone
Clusters are in Northern Italy but large sporting events pull people from all parts of a country to a central point.

Seventyone72seventy3 · 23/02/2020 19:37

Yes. I guess you are right about sportingevents. I am in northern Italy but didn't understand what you meant about Italians being on holiday?

I don't think we need conspiracy theories about a trashy book written in the 1980s

mrshoho · 23/02/2020 19:44

I'm in North West London and hospitals and health centres here are setting up drive through testing areas so you stay in your car and avoid possible spread to the hospitals. it is clear that our hospitals just would not cope with sudden huge numbers of cases. It would seem that the advice will be to self isolate in our own homes if necessary. There has been issues with ambulances having to be taken off the road for deep cleaning following potential cases and this puts a massive strain on the Emergency Services. The Holiday Inn at Heathrow has been closed to make way for a centre for any travellers requiring isolation. I am surprised that the numbers in the UK are so small when you consider the amount of people coming and going.

Gammeldragz · 23/02/2020 19:44

Ooh, I love Dean Koontz, not sure I've read that though.
