Link about the four new cases: www.gov.uk/government/news/cmo-for-england-announces-four-new-cases-of-novel-coronavirus

Liz Sly @lizsly (Washington Post's bureau chief covering Iran, Iraq and Syria)
^Turkey's Anadolu news agency says Iraq has confirmed its first coronavirus case, in a woman who traveled from Iran. Iraq has suspended travel to and from Iran after coronavirus was detected there on Wednesday.

I'm also seeing rumours that there are suspected cases now appearing in Turkey (hence why they are closing the border)

Al Arabiya are apparently quoting Turkey’s Health Minister as saying "We didn’t let 8 Iranians enter Turkey because they had Coronavirus symptoms."

It seems that Iraq have not yet received coronavirus testing kits from WHO yet from what I'm reading too.

This isn't a part of the world with much open journalism and certainly these governments are less than reliable but there does appear to be a developing story in the whole region which isn't getting much attention.

FelicityFebruary · 23/02/2020 16:11

See the EU, like the Guardian live feed yesterday assumes panic to be the go to reaction.

"No need to panic", or " Is there a need to panic?" is a poor introductory gambit!

tallah · 23/02/2020 16:11

@lemonjumper I don't feel like they count as "new" if they we on the ship?

FelicityFebruary · 23/02/2020 16:12

Its the Corporal Jones approach!

lemonjumper · 23/02/2020 16:15

@tallah it's the Chief Medical Officer's wording, not mine

"CMO for England announces four new cases of novel coronavirus"

KoalasandRabbit · 23/02/2020 16:15

BBC has finally moved Italy to its first story online

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-51602007

RedToothBrush · 23/02/2020 16:16

Its the Corporal Jones approach!

Unfortunately I think we are much more Corporal Jones than Winston Churchill as a nation in 2020.

KoalasandRabbit · 23/02/2020 16:16

Thanks for posting link Lemon

meredithgrey1 · 23/02/2020 16:16

My DH is not even paying vague attention. I just said to him, "four new coronavirus cases" and he says "oh really, where?" I tell him that they're quarantined from the cruise ship and he says "oh they're all British!!".

He initially thought I meant four new cases in the world today Hmm
It's a nice state of blissful ignorance he lives in sometimes.

HairyFloppins · 23/02/2020 16:18

Hope them coach drivers are going into quarantine and that plane gets a good clean.

tallah · 23/02/2020 16:19

@lemonjumper ah yes I realise that. I just mean that's not the worrying news I was expecting once I opened it. I know it's gonna happen tho waaaaaa

HasaDigaEebowai · 23/02/2020 16:22

Italy story gets moved up to distract from the four new uk cases..

RedToothBrush · 23/02/2020 16:24

Also another point about the South Korean outbreak:

The cult at the centre of it, is largely quite closed to the outside community. Members spend most of their time within the group or trying to recruit new members at the expense of work and family members outside the organisation.

This should, to a certain extent, mean that its easier to identify those at risk and contains it within that community.

Downside is, if they are a cult then they may believe that God has chosen them to be infected... Yeah best not to follow that particular train of thought too much.

lemonjumper · 23/02/2020 16:25

@tallah Yes, I know what you mean! It'd be more worrying if it was new cases that had spread within the UK.

Italy story gets moved up to distract from the four new uk cases..

@HasaDigaEebowai - yes, spot on.

ofwarren · 23/02/2020 16:36

Hasa you are on the money there I think. I was trying to rationalise why Italy is only headline news now but what you said totally makes sense.
I bet they have known about the diagnosis for the 4 at least since last night.

SubordinateThatClause · 23/02/2020 16:48

Much as I loved 2012... this fills me with horror. Why not cancel? Seems highly irresponsible to welcome teams from all over the world, given current situation...

Seventyone72seventy3 · 23/02/2020 16:52

Our schools and nurseries are now closed for the whole of next week.

ClientQueen · 23/02/2020 16:58

@ofwarren yep. We have a manager off as she's been to Ireland....
Paid working from home (which we never do!)

tallah · 23/02/2020 17:03

@SubordinateThatClause I doubt that very much. I worked on 2012, it takes way more than the amount of time we have left to plan it.

WaterSheep · 23/02/2020 17:03

57 new cases, 55 crew members and 2 passengers, of which 52 asymptomatic from the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan.

Well that's reassuring... Shock

Ciwirocks · 23/02/2020 17:08

My in laws are all in Milan at the moment and due back on tue, they are meant to be picking my kids up from school I honestly want to stay away from them for 2 weeks but my dh will think I am being daft and so will the in laws. They are so blasé about everything I doubt they would self quarantine. I am so worried now, it’s only a matter of time before cases increase here and we end up on lockdown as well.

Delatron · 23/02/2020 17:12

So most of the news outlets have moved the Italy story up to the headlines at the same time..! Coincidence?

ofwarren · 23/02/2020 17:14

The new UK cases are hardly being reported. They aren't even trending on twitter. Such manipulation.

Lycidas · 23/02/2020 17:15

I wish they would stop asking experts the question ‘Should we panic?’ because the sane response to that is always ‘no’. Since when is panic helpful? I’d prefer ‘Do we need to be taking any action or measures’ etc..
