Two concerning things for me about this mornings updates. Firstly the fact that the WHOis saying that Italy made a serious mistake in not quarantining people arriving from China. Presumably that also applies to every other country in the world! Nobody is doing that as far as I am aware unless they are showing symptoms.

Secondly reports of general cold symptoms in those who are diagnosed eg sniffly, runny noses etc. Meaning that it’s less easily distinguished from flu/cold

*It's me with the dd in the ski resort - French Alps.

She is not feeling at all well, but has promised to go to the pharmacist after her shift this morning. Dry cough, had upset stomach, I'm quite anxious about her actually. Hope she calls me later to says she's got some fantastic French medication, they are usually pretty generous compared to what we can buy OTC here*

This won't account for the cough, but it could be a stomach/sickness bug.

My son has just returned from an Italian ski trip (airport about 40 miles from infected region). 2 days before he went, his hotel hit The Sun newspaper as 40 school children had contracted norovirus, with some on drips.

We were assured by the school the day before that all was well and the hotel had had a deep clean and that it was safe to go.

However, it seems half my son's group did catch Noro on their trip, including his room mate/coach mate and my son returned late yesterday, so waiting to see if he has it.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, had said on his official website that rumours of the virus in Iran were caused by foreign propaganda aimed at disrupting their election.

So that’ll be helpful Hmm

2 more deaths in Iran.

I wonder if these are some of the ones that disappeared yesterday. At one point yesterday they were reporting 5 new deaths, and then it went down to just 1.

8 deaths in Iran in total according to the latest Worldometer report.

Indeed, very helpful.

I feel sorry for the everyday people in Iran.

Shares that there is hope to have a vaccine start clinical trials in 16 days.

Reassured me that there is a lot going on “behind the scenes”...

WaterSheep · 23/02/2020 10:18

8 deaths in Iran in total according to the latest Worldometer report.

For hours yesterday it was showing as 9. Then the new deaths dropped from 5 to 1 without any explanation.

NemophilistRebel · 23/02/2020 10:19

The Iran thing is confusing, it doesn’t seem right and could very well be political

They have very limited connections to China so to have such immediate cases including death compared to say UK or America is unusual to say the least

NemophilistRebel · 23/02/2020 10:20

Remember the plane not that long ago?

Iran ‘no we didn’t shoot down any plane’

Few days later

Iran ‘oh that plane, yes we did, oops’

Why aren't we getting advice on visiting Italy?
Countries with less cases are on our "be aware of symptoms" list.

Because it has happened so quickly, I presume. At the beginning of last week, we received an email at work informing us that no one was to travel to the affected South East Asian countries and that, if we did, we would be have to be self-quarantined for 14 days. No one was even considering Italy. A colleague in my team was in Italy this past week (and that’s just my team so there are likely to be others elsewhere in the firm given that it was half term). It’s going to be interesting to see what the next email says.

NemophilistRebel · 23/02/2020 10:21

On Italy reporting I’m surprised people aren’t hearing about it

I wake up each morning to my radio being switched on to the 7o clock news and both this morning and yesterday the main headline was Italy cases and closing down campuses etc

The military are being bought in somewhat like Wuhan too

We're Living In China During The Coronavirus Outbreak. Every Day Is Now Deeply Unnerving.
"When we got to Starbucks, the employees would not let us come in. While we waited for our lattes, [they] took our temperatures and recorded our information."

About the psychological impact of shut down life in China.

RedToothBrush · 23/02/2020 10:27

Because it has happened so quickly, I presume.

It kicked off on Friday. Today is Sunday.

We are a backward nation and civil servants won't discuss travel advice or health advice until 9am Monday morning.

PinkGinAndTacos · 23/02/2020 10:27

Very glad I've got my stash. Feels like a small insurance policy.
My bf doesnt live with be and is in another town, I do worry if it got bad here that we might end up separated

NemophilistRebel · 23/02/2020 10:27

It must be terrible for people who are affected in the hot spots of China in that way

Hopefully it’s keeping them safe

The friends I know living in China do not have this yet and are going about their daily business

They also don’t know the severity of what’s going on in neighbouring cities due to media blackout

AvocadoOwl · 23/02/2020 10:31

I don't think the outbreak in Iran is too hard to believe. All it takes is one infected (possibly even asymptomatic) person to arrive and spread it around unchecked. No measures were taken to control the spread in Iran because the government didn't want to risk affecting election turn out figures and as a result its likely been spreading there for weeks.

If SuperSteve had been left to roam free rather than us hospitalising him with strict infection control and tracking down all his contacts we could be seeing the same levels of infection here too. As it is I'd say it's pretty likely many countries have it silently spreading and it's a matter of time before a cluster of pneumonia cases uncovers hotspots, just as Italy have experienced.

#BREAKING Venice's famous Carnival is going to be suspended due to the new coronavirus outbreak in northern Italy, says Luca Zaia, the president of the Veneto region

ofwarren · 23/02/2020 10:34

I agree avocado it WILL happen here. Why would it not? There are literally no measures in place to stop it.

Iran has significant economic connections to China. I posted earlier that a Chinese consortium is building Iran’s high-speed rail link between Tehran, Qom and Isfahan. That’s just an example - according to this 2019 article China is Iran’s largest trading partner. So I don’t find it at all surprising that the virus has found its way to Iran.

Snowdropsdelight · 23/02/2020 11:06

I don't understand why all countries couldn't immediately ban travel from China except for repatriation and then under quarantine conditions..

DD1 has been to the pharmacist, they didnt immediately shout 'plague' but gave her 2 different types of cough syrup. I've sent her back in to buy a thermometer - 2€.

LarkDescending · 23/02/2020 11:11

I was addressing a pp’s earlier point - that Iran “has very limited connections to China”
