to not know the difference between flu and a cold!

I spent the night not moving because I felt so ill, freezing cold, despite many (many!) layers, and needing a pee all night but feeling too ill to have one, despite it eventually really hurting by about 3am. I didn't sleep all night because I just felt too bad and freezing. Is this a cold?

Why can't I tell? Cold the night before, cold again tonight, feeling woozy and wobbly, cough, and pathethic!

Ah, well, you are one of the few then to actually claim to having had flu.

Why were you tested? As its not routine, and you hadn't said this, just that GP dx

OP posts:
usernameishistory · 23/02/2020 14:18

You said GP dx when he was called out by your DH Confused

Also,

I pretty much think if you are able to pick up your phone and post about it then you don’t have the flu!

What you think is wrong-think

Christmashope19 · 23/02/2020 14:18

I didn’t know that I had to put my full medical history on here...!

usernameishistory · 23/02/2020 14:21
Grin Ha ha! Was that necessary, silly. You were wrong-thinking and you misled with your claim that GP dx when dh called him out to see you, yet couldnt have known.

Oh well. Your bad.

We don't want your medical history thank you

You are now rambling and boring me
Sooo glad you don’t have the flu
Bye

Yes mild flu and severe colds do have a crossover.

It's interesting with this coronavirus you can have it and seemingly not be ill. That probably goes some way to explaining why people react differently to different viruses.

I've had flu once. What you describe as your symptoms last week would lead me to think flu. The whole £50 note thing is a myth but I think in society it's handy to have the social norms of believing this to prevent the people who have 2 days off work with "the flu". (Clearly they felt ill but was more likely a cold!).

It would also help if people realised a cold can be bad and can force a few days off work.

I ha d cold a few weeks ago. Sudafed sinus and paracetamol helped for the worst few days. NOTHING stopped my sore throat. I managed to work despite feeling shit because I could manage temp with meds.
I was actually worse after 5 days when it cleared - I had the hugest post viral slump and that's when all the comments about how pale and ill I looked started HmmGrin

usernameishistory · 23/02/2020 14:53

A cold can kill
And Over 70% can have flu and be symptomless.

No crossover, different viruses, but can have similar symptoms.

Hope you feel better now weird

Another one that thought they had flu but it turned out to be pneumonia here! Put off going to docs as I couldn't even think straight. Only went coz dh made me an appointment and took me. Got sent straight to hospital and they thought I had sepsis for a bit. Never been through A+e so fast. They were waiting for me when I arrived

itsgettingweird · 23/02/2020 21:30

I meant crossover in severity not viruses 😂

Eg a bad cold can be worse than mild flu.

I'm a lot better thanks. Wasn't really right for 2 weeks but the worst thing for me was having to avoid my parents as dad is having chemo. (And mums finished 2 months ago so she spoils easily catch the virus and spread it as immune still low)

usernameishistory · 24/02/2020 17:20

Ah, yes, I'm with you.

Glad you're on the mend. I am hopeful of an end in sight!

Sending you good wishes for you and your parents.

I had flu a couple of years ago that turned into pneumonia. I was off work for 3 weeks all told and chunks of my hair fell out. I've never felt worse in my life. To be fair that was pneumonia but even when it was "just" flu it was dreadful.
A cold and you go to work, flu and you don't even go downstairs.
Hope you feel better soon OP.

You'll see you're wrong if you read the thread birdie

Well sorry OP but @MNHQ need to start dealing with people like that with an attitude problem.

ScrambledSmegs · 24/02/2020 19:21

Glad you're feeling a bit better OP. I don't know how you can tell the difference between a cold and the flu either, judging by this thread.

My DM made me play in a tennis tournament when I had flu as a teen. She didn't 'believe' I had it because I could get out of bed occasionally to use the loo. Worst match I've ever played - I won, but only because I suspect my opponent thought I might die if she made me run for the ball Grin. I was a wreck afterwards, totally ruined my school holidays. Never got sick in term time, such bad luck.

She believed I'd had it when she caught it though.

usernameishistory · 24/02/2020 20:47

Birdie I assumed you and the Birdie above you were one and the same, was referring to that post.

Haven't RTFT but anyone who doesn't know the difference has never had flu! Proper flu. Not a heavy cold

usernameishistory · 24/02/2020 21:13

The rtft before posting such nonsense ffs

Ok i live in Japan. The minute anyone has even a slight temp they run to the doctors and get tested for flu. In my opinion some flu is very similar to those described so far. Cant move etc. I have had colds that were worse than some flu! The reason I know is i too have to go get tested. My kids have had flu but the next day jumping over the sofa and because it is tested as flu they have to stay off school for a few days. The good point of everyone being test crazy here is i think the corona virus will be controlled way better than the more stoic, i am not going to the doctors until i am dying brits .

Whyamiwastingtime · 24/02/2020 21:22

Also as everyone runs to the doctors for testing it means that Flu is controlled everyone knows if flu A or flu B is in the schools.

Sunshine1239 · 24/02/2020 21:24

Actually if you google and go on nhs you will see that 30% of people with flu are actually asymptomatic so it could be a cold or flu

greasyspooncafe · 24/02/2020 21:26

I couldn't walk when I.had flu. My legs completely gave up on me

I was bedridden for 10 days. No sneezing. Just high temps and the shakes constantly.

Sunshine1239 · 24/02/2020 21:26

Sorry I never read all thread my bad! Ignore me 😂

usernameishistory · 24/02/2020 22:19

Actually its 70%+ asymptomatic [flu]

Sounds like Japan has it nailed! Wish we had that now with covid19 around!

This thread is an education. Not just about the flu - about how many people actually read the full thread, or even just the main points covered in it.
