...to think a hot cross bun is a snack?

I just love them. Buttered and sandwiched back together or toasted and buttered. In place of a cookie/crisps/slice of cake as a snack. DH thinks they’re a sandwich alternative and should be filled with cheese or jam and eaten with crisps/fruit etc as part of a meal.

What the hell is wrong with him?!?!

Lordfrontpaw · 17/02/2020 07:55

Toaster with some butter and a cup of tea. About teatime or when I get home from work.

Rockingham1 · 17/02/2020 08:00

Not a sandwich and not a carrier for anything other than butter

pastapestoparmesan · 17/02/2020 08:09

I like them untoasted with a slab of butter in the middle. They also make outstanding French toast. Last year I made some, it took forever and was a load of hassle but they tasted amazing. I only like normal flavour fruity spicy ones.

rosy71 · 17/02/2020 08:15

I have had them for lunch but just buttered and toasted, not with any sort of filling.

userabcname · 17/02/2020 08:20

Filled with cheese and eaten with crisps???!! Is your DH ok??! He sounds unhinged.

Gogolego · 17/02/2020 08:52

Filling a hot X bun with ham and cheese is definitely grounds for LTB!

I like mine as a snack or for breakfast

earlydoors42 · 17/02/2020 08:59

How am I in a 3% minority?! It's the same size as a sandwich! It's your lunch not a snack. And they are much better with cheese in :-)

lottiegarbanzo · 17/02/2020 09:07

Can't you tell the difference between sweet and savoury baked goods, do you have a very sweet tooth, or do you just not care?

earlydoors42 · 17/02/2020 09:26

I don't have a sweet tooth at all. It tastes like bread to me, not a cake. Cakes are not made to be toasted though - bread is!

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 17/02/2020 09:30

I’ve ticked YANBU but it depends on my mood. Sometimes I’ll have them as my lunch, sometimes I’ll have the as something sweet after my lunch. The dc like them for an afternoon snack after school (& I might as well have the last one in the pack), especially if it’s been a cold & wet walk home.

earlydoors what about tea cakes then? They have cakes in the name (aren’t that different to a hcb) & are best toasted a la Little Chef in the 90’s.

MarvellousMrsMouse · 17/02/2020 09:33

Too sweet for me. I’d say they are confectionary.

Selfsettling3 · 17/02/2020 09:34

Snack or surely an Easter breakfast.

PermanentlyFrizzyHairBall · 17/02/2020 09:35

WTF? LTB! Although you are also unreasonable as now I want a hot buttered hot cross bun and it's hailing outside.

FizzyIce · 17/02/2020 09:37

Eww.. your husband is very unfair !
Only like them toasted with butter but we have them as a snack or breakfast

OlaEliza · 17/02/2020 09:42

I'd eat them with cheese in as a snack 🤷

mawbroon · 17/02/2020 09:44

Krentenballen are eaten in the Netherlands with cheese/ham/salami and a hot cross bun is a good substitute here.

Don't knock it til you've tried it!

earlydoors42 · 17/02/2020 09:51

Bernards...

Tea cakes are made out of bread though! It's just a misnomer. You toast them because they are made of bread. It's bread with some currants mixed in.

Icecreamdiva · 17/02/2020 09:58

@TrainspottingWelsh is quite right. Putting a cross on top of a blueberry/chocolate/caramel/any other flavour cake doesn’t make it a hot cross bun. It might be a tasty cake with a cross on it but it’s not a HCB. They are flavoured with fruit and spice ONLY.

I’ve always been firmly in the camp of splitting, toasting and buttering but I am tempted by the idea of cheese with one.

tangled2 · 17/02/2020 12:39

Really nice with cheese, in the same way fruit cake is!

tangled2 · 17/02/2020 12:41

But a croissant, crumpet, English muffin etc should also always come with cheese too.

motheroftwoboys · 17/02/2020 13:17

I eat them warm, with butter and a hard boiled egg! Tis a local thing here in the North East. But only at Easter. Too soon as yet.

Lordfrontpaw · 17/02/2020 14:20

Are you sure... mum (and her lot) were Geordies and I never heard of that!

Deelish75 · 17/02/2020 14:55

We have them for breakfast with jam on.

whatevertr · 17/02/2020 15:33

If you've never tried hot x bubs with cheese DO NOT knock it!

Bun n cheeeeese
