...to think a hot cross bun is a snack?

I just love them. Buttered and sandwiched back together or toasted and buttered. In place of a cookie/crisps/slice of cake as a snack. DH thinks they’re a sandwich alternative and should be filled with cheese or jam and eaten with crisps/fruit etc as part of a meal.

Cheese is good with HCB.

or toasted with butter.

Not keen on other toppings

MashedSpud · 16/02/2020 22:23

Crisps? Sacrilege.

Toasted with butter.

SuperFurryDoggy · 16/02/2020 22:24

Jam??? CHEESE???

No.

They should be eaten with butter for breakfast or afternoon tea/snack.

Or binged on of an evening.

GorkyMcPorky · 16/02/2020 22:24

I'm having to eat mine for breakfast, otherwise I'd be having the equivalent of an extra meal a day. I'm on the fence. Cheese? WTF? But yes I make a sandwich out of mine (with Nutella!)

SparePantsAndLego · 16/02/2020 22:28

He’s a monster. I may have to go and toast one, slather it in butter and eat it just to check, though...

MintyMabel · 16/02/2020 22:37

They are vile however you eat them.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 16/02/2020 22:38

I'm confused. What else other than a snack would they be? Your husband is mad in the same way as whichever lunatic in America decided to make a burger using donuts instead of buns.

TrainspottingWelsh · 16/02/2020 22:38

It's hardly surprising op's dh has shared his blasphemous recipes with all the references to ready ruined hot cross buns.

Hot cross buns should only ever be hot cross bun flavoured. Not these stupid flavoured impersonators.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 16/02/2020 22:40

Breakfast or snack. Jam is good (ducks!) or plain buttered, but cheese? Absolutely not!

Now I want to go and buy hot cross buns though.

Ginkypig · 16/02/2020 22:41

I don't actually like them but I definitely think of them as firmly in the same camp as for example

Scones
Crumpets
Pastries
Croissants
Possibly English muffins

All of those can be a snack for me or they could be a breakfast or lunch type smaller meal.

ExpletiveDelighted · 16/02/2020 22:42

There are very few things that are not improved by the addition of cheese. Hot cross buns are one of those things. Definitely a snack not a meal.

LellyMcKelly · 16/02/2020 22:42

No, they’re from the same family as iced buns, malt loaf, maybe a crumpet or a croissant. They are breakfast, or an alternative to a cake or biscuit. They’re not lunch or dinner.

Tartyflette · 16/02/2020 22:48

Toasted, slabs of unsalted butter laid in top, drizzle of honey.

Mid afternoon or traditional tea-time snack. Or late at night.
Optional extra - slice or three of Soreen malt loaf, also with slabs of butter laid on top.

HuntingCuns · 16/02/2020 22:49

Absolutely definitely a snack. Hence I love them but don't buy or eat them, as I don't snack.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 16/02/2020 22:50

I could live with someone putting cheese on a croissant, though, but on a hot cross bun? No. They have icing on top. Ew.

Christmadtree · 16/02/2020 22:50

They are a snack, or excellent breakfast with loads of butter and crispy bacon added!

WhatKatyDidNot · 16/02/2020 22:51

Snack.

PSA: do not buy Tesco Finest salted caramel and chocolate chip hot cross buns. They are vile. I do not know what possessed me to buy them.

PenguinsOnParade · 16/02/2020 22:56

DH and I would both agree on them being a snack. However I must have them cut open and toasted then buttered. He just eats them straight out the packet. No cutting them open, no butter, nothing.

BohoBunney · 16/02/2020 22:58

Cheese in a hot cross bun like a sandwich is actually lovely! Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! It works sweet / savoury as cheese and grapes / apple. I wouldn’t eat it as a meal with crisps though!

Toasted and buttered is still best though.

BohoBunney · 16/02/2020 22:59

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a hot cross bun with icing on.

Weffiepops · 16/02/2020 23:03

They're a snack your dh is foolish and lacking in wisdom

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 16/02/2020 23:08

So the ones you get don't have the little icing cross on the top?

AnxietyDream · 16/02/2020 23:12

What a waste of a hot cross bun to treat it like a bread roll. I am now wondering if there are people out there spreading egg mayonnaise or making BLTs with iced buns...

lottiegarbanzo · 16/02/2020 23:12

The cross is made with pale dough, Iceed HTB are a travesty - and how do you toast them?

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 16/02/2020 23:15

Carefully so the icing doesn't melt and drip on the bottom of your oven!
