...to think a hot cross bun is a snack?

I just love them. Buttered and sandwiched back together or toasted and buttered. In place of a cookie/crisps/slice of cake as a snack. DH thinks they’re a sandwich alternative and should be filled with cheese or jam and eaten with crisps/fruit etc as part of a meal.

I will only eat them with lots of butter and lemon curd. However, I have yet to have one as I have a self imposed rule that I will not eat them until the 1st of March (I have no idea why!) I will not let a mince pie cross my lips until the 1st of December either!

LostInTheColonies · 16/02/2020 23:28

Go to Bermuda if you think cheese is grim. They are eaten there with fish cakes... This tastes about as good as it sounds 🤢

Butter all the way!

Ritascornershop · 16/02/2020 23:30

Next to crisps? Good god no, we are not animals. Toasted with butter and a sharp cheddar? Yes please!

MermaidinJeans · 16/02/2020 23:33

Technically...... They're revolting ;)

But definitely a revolting snack and not revolting meal.

user1494182820 · 16/02/2020 23:39

They're vile and should be abolished

Saxifraga · 17/02/2020 00:00

Your husband is definitely the unreasonable one! 😁

katy1213 · 17/02/2020 00:11

They are all a massive disappointment these days, not like they used to taste warm and sticky from the baker's. Supermarkets have destroyed them - and there are some disgusting ones out there. Toffee, chocolate, that is not a hot cross bun. Not even when reduced to 10p a packet!

dressingdrown · 17/02/2020 00:13

Normal ones, toasted with extra mature cheddar.

But I eat cheddar with fruit cake too.

🤷🏻‍♀️

Blueuggboots · 17/02/2020 00:29

Hot cross buns with cheese......YES. Bloody lovely!!!

managedmis · 17/02/2020 00:31

I reckon I could eat at least 4 at once. With a pack of lurpack

ThePurpleMoose · 17/02/2020 00:34

Your DH is BU, not you!

Sonichu · 17/02/2020 00:48

Tbh I can't see how eating them with cheese or jam could make them taste any worse than they already do.

ilovedjerrymore · 17/02/2020 00:56

Cheese- I actually want to be sick at the thought of cheese and hot cross bun togetherConfused

Please no, I don’t think I could be someone like thatGrin

On another note added them to my shopping list this week...Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 17/02/2020 00:57

When I was growing up they were pretty much just for breakfast on Good Friday morning - toasted and buttered, of course.

Now they've essentially just become a fancy teacake - which should also be toasted and buttered but can be eaten for elevenses, with tea in the afternoon or supper. Or any time really. But

Scott72 · 17/02/2020 00:59

It depends on their size, what's in them and what you put on them.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/02/2020 01:02

I had the M&S chilli and cheese ones

Whatever it says on the label, and regardless of whether they're nice or not, hot cross buns are not savoury. Or chocolate, or toffee. All these newfangled variations are just buns. Hot cross buns are sweet, spiced and usually have sultanas or raisins but nothing else.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/02/2020 01:04

And anyone who doesn't toast them.... the 'hot' isn't optional and doesn't mean chilli.HmmGrin

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 17/02/2020 01:07

I had the M&S chilli and cheese ones

Why does this exist? Who at M&S was responsible for this culinary abomination?

Ilovesausages · 17/02/2020 01:16

I like them toasted or un toasted with butter. Also nice with jam, Nutella or thick honey.

Ritascornershop · 17/02/2020 02:32

I think a wee bit of dark chocolate is quite nice in them, so long as they have the traditional spices and dried fruits. Chilli is just weird though.

you can have a hcb for breakfast, elevenses, afternoon tea, pudding at lunch or supper (but not part of the main) or as a separate snack between meals. but
(a) adding cheese is a vile travesty, the best combo is to lightly toast, spread with salted butter and strawberry jam, but don't sandwich back together.
(b) they shouldn't be eaten before Palm Sunday.

maddiemookins16mum · 17/02/2020 06:05

We had two buttered HCBs for lunch on Saturday 😊

Nitw1t · 17/02/2020 06:17

They are lovely with cheese on. They're basically bread impregnated with pickle, you don't know what you're missing.

That said. HCB&cheese is still a snack, not a meal and jam is a big no.

KatherineJaneway · 17/02/2020 06:18

They are a snack, not a meal.
