Light-hearted.

Examples. As a teen I worked in a shop, sometimes something doesn't scan and the customer (if paying attention) without fail would say, "Oh, that's free then?" Followed by a chuckle.

I wear very high heels a lot, I get told all the time, "How you don't break your neck in those, I'll never know!"

The latest one, my DP is a head chef, people always say, "Oooh, I bet you get loads of lovely meals cooked for you!" I bloody wish, it's a Busman's Holiday for him, he doesn't want to cook after a day in the kitchen. 😆

@Icanseethepigeon birthday twin, I always have to
explain that I wasn’t born in a leap year Grin

WelcometoCranford · 16/02/2020 21:13

I have a similar name to the daughter of a famous dead pop star. No I wasn't named after her/my parents didn't/don't like his music. It's beyond tedious at times.

trumpisaflump · 16/02/2020 21:18

"Oh did you not fancy any more kids then?" I've got one child.
My DS is nearly 10 and I still get asked this on a weekly basis. I could list the multiple reasons I don't have more than one child, most of them out of my control but TBH I'm fed up telling everyone my personal medical history!

dementedma · 16/02/2020 21:19

On hearing my name, people launch into cheesy song of same name and grin inanely as if its the first time anyone has done it!

Stravapalava · 16/02/2020 21:23

While working in Poundland when I was a student "How much is this then"? Ho ho ho, how I laughed. Not.

ThisHereMamaBear · 16/02/2020 21:24

Oh god, I realise I have met lots of you in real life. I apologise!

SymphonyofShadows · 16/02/2020 21:26

Has anyone ever told you that you look like that woman from Gavin & Stacey? (Nessa)

WelcometoCranford · 16/02/2020 21:29

Working in a framing and art gallery business that is predominantly framing orientated, advertises this widely and has prominent signage - "Do you frame pictures?" . I was only there one day a week, and I think one Saturday it had happened three times in quick succession and it was a testing, busy day..... so when number four came in and asked me IN FRONT OF A BENCH LOADED WITH FRAMING TOOLS AND ARTWORK I replied deadpan "No, we bake cupcakes". And he had no sense of sodding humour even when I apologised, alot.

I was in a fish and chip shop in Glasgow that offered a wide range of foods in addition. A couple came in and studied the pizza menu then asked the man serving if they served chips. I was actually a bit scared what he was going to come out with in response.

Kayleigh?

lotusbell · 16/02/2020 21:30

"You're small, aren't you?"
"Yes."

@GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery

Unfortunately I am not Mary. My nursery rhyme is much more fucking irritating and actually quite unpleasant!

Gingerkittykat · 16/02/2020 21:35

*I have a rescue dog who came from Romania.

People ask me quite seriously if he understands me telling him to sit or stay or whatever in English. It is truly truly amazing how often that happens.*

My friend took on an elderly Welsh dog from her friend who went travelling. She had to learn all of the commands like sit and bed in Welsh so the damn dog would understand.

I have alopecia, still got quite a lot of hair but a lot of patches too.

Every time I talk about it the first thing they say is that it could be my thyroid and I should get it checked. My thyroid is fucking fine, as were all of the other blood tests I had but the scalp biopsy showed up the reasons for it.

Absolutepowercorrupts · 16/02/2020 21:35

@SymphonyofShadows
I'm curious now, I knew a woman that could be Nessa's double. Not Ruth Jones, Nessa.
Same jet black hair, very green eyes and all of Nessa's attitude.

emelsie · 16/02/2020 21:36

My DD is 11 , I had her in my late teens , whenever I talk about my children and their ages I have always got "you look too young to have a child of 'X' years old " and this has been said her whole life whether she was 1 , 2 or 11 years old , I do wonder if I will ever look old enough to have had her Confused

SymphonyofShadows · 16/02/2020 21:38

Absolute I’m not welsh if that helps? I’ve got very green eyes though.

GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery · 16/02/2020 21:40

@SymphonyofShadows Nessa is the best character to be fair.

My son was in a wheelchair for a few months and strangers would stop and ask what was wrong. After a few weeks we got bored of explaining so would just say "oh, nothing. He's just lazy"

SymphonyofShadows · 16/02/2020 21:43

I haven’t (yet) taken DS out carol singing armed with a card machine. We’d end up singing punk classics anyway

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 16/02/2020 21:44

It happens to well-known people as well.

To ask for the question you always get asked, when the person saying it thinks they're the first person to say it.
emelsie · 16/02/2020 21:44

**Oop missed out , the question is always "how old were you/are you? "

PeppyPiggy · 16/02/2020 21:47

Since I had DD I am always asked in really roundabout ways how old I am, like "are you her big sister?" being the main one. My DD is clearly my child, they are asking it because they are treading on eggshells about saying I look young. And before anyone says lucky you, I'd much rather look like an attractive woman of my age (27) than the acne ridden teen mess I look like to others and not have the kind of gross disgusting men it attracts when they think you are younger than you are.

Trunkysaurus · 16/02/2020 21:49

I'm in car sales. If I had a pound for every test drive that begins with "oh, it's just like being on my driving test", I could retire and not have to laugh along with the arseholes.

Robstersgirl · 16/02/2020 21:50

You should get a telly. Big family.

EssentialHummus · 16/02/2020 21:51

Re identical twins - for about a year I used to take toddler DD (female, pale, white blonde, chubby) and her mate (male, brown hair, skinny as anything) out for a wander in the double buggy, and I'd get questions about whether they were identical every.sodding.time. And every other time someone would assume that they were twins, and ask me how I'd conceived them.

PhoneTwattery · 16/02/2020 21:52

@MamaJoon

When customers see my name badge "Ohh like the amazon thing"

"Alexa play some music"

"Alexa what's the weather"

I’m so sorry but that did make me laugh out loud! 😂
