Not underwear... And general everyday wear...

Jeans a few times, jumpers a couple of times.

Same, anything in contact with skin once. I am paranoid about body odour from school days/working in an office/generally being in close contact with people, especially as I use natural deodrant as others itch. They are much better these days than they used to be e.g. dr organics teatree from h&b, if you shower daily and wear fresh clothes.

Apart from bras, maybe 2-3 days. That is habit from not having many bras. I might change that to 1-2 days.

womaninblue · 15/02/2020 09:34

No wonder bees and insects are dying and the seas are polluted with all this detergent and fabric softener getting into the eco system. And all that drinking water being used to wash barely-worn items. It's not sustainable. Has no one here learned anything from Extinction Rebellion?

Knickers clean each day, bras and socks when they need it – more frequently in summer, less frequently in winter. I don't do heavy sweaty work and don't have stinky feet or pits.

Tops a couple of times if they're in direct contact with skin, then the sniff test. I wear merino wool long-sleeve underlayers at this time of year and they are famously resistant to smells and sweat. Jeans and trousers are worn until they go baggy or they're visibly dirty, jumpers worn over base layers ditto – often a week or so. I rarely wear the same tops and trousers on two consecutive days so sometimes a pair of jeans can be worn six or seven times before washing.

Once you get into this 'must smell of fabric conditioner' game you're lost to it.

RiftGibbon · 15/02/2020 09:37

It depends on many factors.
Where I wore it (farm park, school, party, etc)
How long I wore it for.
Whether it was dirty (surface dirt visible)
Whether it was smelly
What sort of fabric it was.

So jeans I wore to my friend's house ( who has three dogs) would probably need washing when I got home. The t-shirt I wore over another top for warmth on the school run can be worn again.
PJs put in for half an hour in the evening can go in the weekly wash.

KimikosDreamHouse · 15/02/2020 09:41

I said it before but I sincerely and truly hope the "can't wear more than once" is an only on Mumsnet thing (like actually caring about Elf on the Shelf is)

I bet all the only wear once brigade throw out food as soon as it reaches its "best before date" (which is another piece of wasteful nonsense)

cowboy · 15/02/2020 10:15

Underwear only once because anything else is, quite frankly, minging.
Tops, tee shirts once.
Jeans probably five or six times unless they get muddy or dirty.
Pjs three or four nights.
Jumpers probably only once as they go shapeless but hoodies a lot longer.

QuixoticQuokka · 15/02/2020 10:17

How do you wash a school blazer? Ours are polyester, so a normal 30 degree wash like everything else.

Newmetoday · 15/02/2020 10:21

Jeans about 3 days. Light tops once, jumpers 2 days. Depends on the weather. I wash my work clothes after every wear though

Newmetoday · 15/02/2020 10:22

Pj’ are about 4 days but I don’t wear them in bed

Thymelord · 15/02/2020 10:24

Agree. I'm dismayed at how many people are saying they wash after one wear.

Em012 · 15/02/2020 10:25

Once

MelAndShoe · 15/02/2020 10:25

Once. But I'm quite a sweaty person. I would wash less if I could. Skirts can be more than once.

DBML · 15/02/2020 10:30

I generally wear t-shirts; blouses; dresses etc once.
Hoodies can be worn twice, if I wore them over something and for a short space of time...and if it’s clean.
Jeans - depends on where I’ve worn them. For a couple of hours to visit family, I might wear them again. If I’ve trekked through the local park, then once.

My son who is 14 will wash his clothes every half a day, which drives me up the wall. He might put a hoody on, decide to change immediately and throw first hoodie in the wash 😡

My husband will wash day clothes every day to every other day...but his comfy around the house tracksuit needs to be chiselled off him to be put in the wash.

Weffiepops · 15/02/2020 10:30

If it has dirt marks I wash immediately, otherwise a lot of stuff I'll wear 3 or 4 times

Franticbutterfly · 15/02/2020 10:31

New top every day because I’m mucky, jeans 3 days sometimes. Kids clean every day, we all get food down us lol

Alsohuman · 15/02/2020 10:32

I must be filthy! Knickers and socks one wear, bras and T-shirt’s a couple, bottoms at least a week, jumpers last the entire winter unless they get something spilt on them. Washing wrecks clothes and is really bad for the environment. I don’t mind replacing knickers and socks regularly but not other things.

Alsohuman · 15/02/2020 10:35

Oh and I detest the smell of fabric conditioner and haven’t bought it for at least 20 years.

ShakespearesSisters · 15/02/2020 10:41

Socks and pants once, my work tops once as they are a horrible material that gets a bit sweaty, but for everything else as long as it's not dirty and doesn't smell it will survive another day or more.

PlomBear · 15/02/2020 10:44

Only once, I get really sweaty!

Ginfordinner · 15/02/2020 10:52

How do you wash a school blazer?

I used to wash DD’s blazer every half term as well, and sometimes more often. It was made from recycled plastic bottles (I think) and DD used to get very sweaty wearing it as the school was very strict about the students wearing their blazers all the time. It was machine washable and washed very well.

I'm dismayed at how many people are saying they wash after one wear

Same here. My mum used to do the washing every Monday. This was back in the days of the twin tub. There was no way that people wore a complete set of clean clothing every day back then, and they didn’t smell.

When DD was at school she could often make a skirt or pair of trousers last a whole week between washes. She had a clean shirt and underwear on every day of course.

I simply don’t understand why so many posters on here get hysterical about needing to wash absolutely everything after one single use. They must be martyrs to the washing machine.

Strawberrycreamsundae · 15/02/2020 10:53

Bras every two or three days unless I’ve got sweaty, jeans probably after half a dozen wears unless I’m gardening or decorating in which case it’s when I’ve finished what I’m doing.
T-shirt’s two or three days, jumpers four or five wears but if grubby or stained obviously sooner.
PJs twice a week, bedding weekly, bath towels weekly, hand towels/tea towels two or three times a week unless grubby.
It really totally depends on what I’m doing, how hot /mucky I’ve got, where I’m going- quick trip to shop or out for a meal ( when I would obviously where clean clothes).
I’m totally relaxed about it, no set rules in my house!

Aibuto · 15/02/2020 10:54

2 or 3 times

Spudlet · 15/02/2020 11:04

DS is going through a wet pants phase, so it’s rare that his bottoms last more than a day, sometimes not even that. I wash the clothes he wears to preschool every time, but apart from that I just wash things when they get mucky (which to be fair doesn’t take long).

For myself, bras every two or three wears, jeans probably 4-5 wears unless they get muddy. Jumpers about the same, t-shirts two days tops. The only things of mine that I wash every time are pants, socks and sports kit - actually even my running tops can last more than one run, but leggings and sports bras need a wash every time. I have enough kit to last a week though, so I can save it up and do one sports wash a week.

I try not to do too much unnecessary laundry, it’s not good for the planet. Still adds up to one load most days with DS, but hopefully that will start to reduce a bit once he stops peeing his pants quite so often!

ILikeyourHairyHands · 15/02/2020 11:32

I'm wearing a cashmere jumper now that I bought in September, it's a cosy 'house jumper' so must have been worn 20 or 30 times. It's not been washed yet and it doesn't smell at all.

I change my pants every day and don't wear a bra but if I did I can't imagine they'd need washing that often. Do the frequent bra-washers have really smelly tits? Does the elastic not perish if you wash them frequently? If I was a bra wearer I'd probably rotate them and wash them very rarely.

I've just got images of greying undergarments in which the elsatic has gone.

KimikosDreamHouse · 15/02/2020 11:36

So ghastly manmade fibre with all that entails being washed weekly with the environmental damage that entails.

The blazers at my son's school were traditional wool suiting so not washable.

my2bundles · 15/02/2020 11:43

School shirt and PE kit once because my DS is in the sweaty teen phase. Everything else 2-4 times worn.
