To ask how often you wear an item of clothes before washing

My dad has a pair of 'self cleaning' heavy woolen socks that apparently haven't been washed for ten years. Apart from the fact they are likely now largely made up of a self-sustaining bacterial colony, and there's probably very little wool left, they don't smell at all. Really. He threw them at me recently and they smell of...nothing really, faintly biological, but in a not unpleasant way.

He has recently taken up wearing no shoes at all.

But that's another story!

Crazy to be washing things after one wear, unless someone has poured a bucket of mud or similar over you.
Really bad for the environment, and such a waste of time when you could be doing something far more useful/interesting.

I’ll wear my running stuff two or three times - I don’t really care if I run past anyone who thinks I smell either! If I sweat massively in hot weather I won’t wear the top twice but I will wear the leggings again 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm currently wearing a pair of jeans on their third wear, a T-shirt on its second wear and a fleece on its second wear. The T-shirt will go in the laundry bin tonight. Disclaimer - I haven't stepped out of the house since Friday afternoon.

If I do an easy 5-10km outside and plan to do another run the next day, it’s a total waste to wash it. No one is going to smell me running down country lanes on my own anyway 😂

If it doesn't smell or doesn't have crud on it, it doesn't need washing.

Jeans I can wear 3-4 times, and a bit more round the house. Work tops often need washing after one wear. Work trousers contain artifical fibres so smell after one wear but then after airing a day can do another day.

When I was at school (late 70s to early 90s) you got spots off clothes with a flannel and only washed shirts. Skirts got cleaned once a term or half term, blazers never. I'm very glad my kids have teousers/pinafore that can be washed but until ds got to the age of getting sweaty, I didn't need to wash more than once a week except for ketchup spills - to be honest, they didn't really need washing then, either, but the social pressure from the 'your child will be bullied if they aren't spotless' brigade got to me.

It was a bit of a shock to have dd the muck magnet, who did need clean clothes daily because of paint, glue and yoghurt and lunch. At least now she's 7 that's getting better!

When questions like this come up I always think of men with suits ..... how long do they wear them before they go to the dry cleaners?

My husband has 8 work suits. I asked him and he takes suits to the cleaners about once every 2 months. I looked up a specialist dry cleaning website, who obviously have an interest in selling dry cleaning and that is in line with what they suggest.

If it’s dirty or smelly I wash it. If it isn’t I don’t.

And anyone who says “i can tell even if you think you can’t” is full of pish. I don’t iron, I don’t over wash and never have I ever had comments. And I have very blunt work colleagues but that’s one thing that they never say anything about.

I was a once-washer and had to stop because it knackers new clothes.

Never wash jerseys after every wear, ruins natural protective oils in wool.

Pants nightwear sheets towels - always at 60. Everything else on ecowash, comes out fine.

T shirts for me once, jeans at least two or three times. Jumpers two or three times. Underwear once.

Jeans or leggings about once a week. T shirts a couple of days. Jumpers when they need it. Bras about once a week which is not often enough. If I spill something or they are muddy straight in the wash. I am horrified by the one wear policy.

Otherwise tops every day. Skirts/trousers 2-3 days. Jumpers maybe a week but they don't get worn all day.

Work trousers and cardigans, two days - the top underneath the cardigan is clean daily. Jeans I can do three days.
DD is the same with School Uniform, clean blue shirt daily but her pleated skirts last two days and she changes her jumper on a Wednesday or Thursday (but she is 15 so it’s not covered in paint or food anymore). DP has a clean shirt every day but will wear his work trousers 2 or 3 days.

Jeans - 2 or 3 days. Jackets can be weeks unless they are visibility dirty (dropped food etc). Anything else - once.

Oh and also the "wear once" brigade - my kids will get changed into home clothes when they arrive home from school at about 4pm. Then get changed into their pyjamas at 8pm for bed.

I am firmly of the "not until it's dirty" camp. Knickers/tights daily. Everything else - no firm rules.

Of course over-washing is going to ruin your clothes, and moreso if you're washing at high temperatures, using lots of washing powder, and fabric conditioner. And then I am assuming most of the "wash after 5 minutes" brigade are sticking stuff in a dryer too - not great for your stuff and rubbish for the environment too.

As an aside, I don't want my clothes to smell of anything. I hate those ads which have some vacant woman pulling a jumper out of a cupboard and getting this weird expression on her face as the voiceover says "that just fresh smell lasts for weeks!" I don't want my stuff reeking of fabric conditioner thanks. It's disgusting artificial stuff.

Jeans two days? Wtf. Absolutely no need to be wearing clothes once or twice and washing them, think of the planet! Fair enough If I'm getting sweaty or dribbling stuff down myself then stuff will go in the wash after one wear, but if something doesn't smell and has no stains on it's getting worn again!

I wonder if that explains the difference. I doubt I own anything made of polyester. The vast majority of my tops and dresses are 100% cotton, silk or wool and are dry clean or hand washable. I've been looking at laundry/ dry cleaning websites and even dry cleaners websites which have a vested interest don't remotely suggest the obsessive level of washing or cleaning some of you go in for.
