Not underwear... And general everyday wear...

Seems crazy how much washing is going on. What a ridiculous waste of water, electricity and money.

Underwear is only worn once, tops worn at the gym are only worn once because they're sweaty. But other clothes only go in the laundry basket if they're dirty or smelly. Some stuff like jeans and hoodies can be worn dozens of times before they need a wash.

PumpkinP · 14/02/2020 22:53

It’s definitely not a “MN thing” I would feel dirty if I wore the same clothes more than once.

Ginfordinner · 14/02/2020 22:55

Some overly fastidious people on here Hmm

artio0 · 14/02/2020 22:57

Woah I am shocked at all the wash after one use posts!!! It's like our planet is fine and we have no worries at all about our environmental impact...... Seriously!?!

Underwear and socks I wash after one use for obvious hygiene reasons, the rest once it smells or looks dirty, ie it needs a wash..... Trousers can last 6-7 days, tops 2-4 on average, and certain wool jumpers can go half a year without washing, just air them out after a wear (no they don't feel dirty and don't smell dirty...). Baby clothes get washed a bit more often usually cause they get dirty quicker.

FarTooSkinny · 14/02/2020 23:13

Underpants - wear once
T shirt - couple of days ok
Jeans - couple of weeks
Jumper - most of the winter
Coat - never washed, ever.

Try soap and water.

Lucylivesinamushroomhouse · 14/02/2020 23:21

I had a conversation with a friend IRL about this. I was astounded to discover she washed all her clothes and kids’ clothes after one wear. Whether they were dirty/smelly or not. I told her we rewear things as long as possible - better for the clothes and the environment, saves time and money etc.

The next time I saw her she said “Lucy this has changed my life.”

With the kids I’m particularly lax, a bit of paint or tomato sauce isn’t going to hurt anyone and I’ve heard nursery staff prefer kids to come in a bit grubby as it takes the pressure away from them to keep them clean.

Pants do get washed after one wear. As do leggings I have run in.

I’ve always wondered why people on MN do so much more laundry than me. It’s almost like we’re not having an environmental crisis. Bonkers.

PumpkinP · 14/02/2020 23:25

Try soap and water.

I do obviously, but there is no way clothes that have been worn for days don’t smell, Keep deluding yourself all you want but the rest of us can smell it!

BackforGood · 14/02/2020 23:27

Oddly enough - when they are dirty, or need a wash.
So, I'd look at them, and if they look clean then I might smell them and that will decide if need a wash or not.
Completely ridiculous to be washing jeans, hoodies, cardis, skirts etc after one or two wears Confused

PickAChew · 14/02/2020 23:29

Until it's dirty.

Quadrangle · 14/02/2020 23:33

Anything in direct contact with my armpits, bum and feet once. Other things a few times

KimikosDreamHouse · 14/02/2020 23:35

It is ridiculous. Skirts in particular.

Do all these wear only once people send tailored suits to the dry cleaners after one wear?

Skyejuly · 14/02/2020 23:36

Once apart from jeans and hoodies

Quadrangle · 14/02/2020 23:38

The anything in direct contact doesn't include pyjama tops as i rewear them a few times

LuluJakey1 · 14/02/2020 23:49

PJs once, nighties/bed t-shirts twice
Pants once
Tights once
Bras probably every 3 days
Cardis a week unless Ds2 is sick down one
Other things a couple of times unless they need washing.

Children have all clean clothes every day. The three of them are never clean by the end of the day. DD in particular (almost 3) is always messy by tea-time.

DH has clean pants, shirt, socks every day and his suits get dry cleaned after a week. Jeans every couple of wears. T shirts or casual shirts once or twice. Football kit every wear.

Coats get washed/ cleaned when they need a wash.

KimikosDreamHouse · 15/02/2020 00:12

and his suits get dry cleaned after a week

Even a site selling dry cleaning thinks once a month/once a season is fine.

whiteroselaundries.co.uk/how-often-should-you-dry-clean-your-suit/

This site suggests even less frequently.

www.menshealth.com/style/a19531369/q-how-many-times-can-i-wear-the-same-suit-in-one-week/

Once a week is bonkers. Waste of money, waste of nasty chemicals and probably drastically reduces the lifespan of the suit.

rosiejaune · 15/02/2020 02:15

Until they smell or are dirty.

1300cakes · 15/02/2020 02:49

Jeans getting washed after 1-2 wears Shock. That seems like a lot to me. I wash mine every 2-3 months, or sooner if I spill something on them.

T shirts 2-3 wears.
Jumpers every 2-3 weeks or until something is spilled on them
Bras once a week.

safariboot · 15/02/2020 03:01

Yes, I am sweaty, thank you very much Judgey McJudgefaces. In any season except winter I'll probably get out of the car seat with sweat on my back. And my armpits too whatever antiperspirant I've tried.

So no, I'm not wearing a t-shirt or shirt two days in a row.

BusterGonad · 15/02/2020 03:08

I can't get over the amount of people that wear things just once, global warming anyone??? It's crazy.

NewInTown08 · 15/02/2020 04:18

Once. Denim not often. I won't say how not often Hmm Clothes that don't reply touch skin, such as cardigans, couple of wears, maybe more. DC clothes get washed after every wear.

Putyourdamnshoeson · 15/02/2020 04:46

I'm another person shocked and frankly disgusted by all this totally unnecessary washing.

It's so bad for the environment in terms of water use, detergent use, wear on clothes, energy use. A PP mentioned the shedding of microplastics from synthetics.

If it smells clean and has no stains that can't be spot cleaned, don't clean it.

Bedding fortnightly and towels weekly.

Honestly, unless you're a sweaty bastard, this is what you need to do.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 15/02/2020 05:52

I have to say. The world has turned. Up until about 18 months ago you were a stinky twat on MN if you didn't bleach every orifice hourly

Now you're a planet destroyer if you don't wear dirty knickers for three weeks

I do enjoy righteousness.

It's so much fun!

ILikeyourHairyHands · 15/02/2020 05:59

I'm just quite pleased my inherent grubbiness has become quite fashionable.

I always knew it was a winner.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 15/02/2020 06:03

(It was always under the auspices of nice stuff)
