Not underwear... And general everyday wear...

When DD was at school she could often make a skirt or pair of trousers last a whole week between washes

The girls' uniform at my son's school is a kilted skirt made out of traditional woollen kilt material. I'd be very surprised if the girls could not make them last the whole term. The officially approved trousers for the boys' uniform were made out of non- washable woollen trouser material. I wasn't aware of any of the children being particularly spongy.

DobbyLovesSocks · 15/02/2020 12:00

Work wear - I wear a pair of trousers for 3 days and then change (work 6 days a week). Tops I will change everyday - not sure why as they are not dirty per se. I wear the same cardigan for the week unless it gets visibly dirty.

When I get in from work I will change into leisure wear (joggers & t-shirts). These get worn for a few days and then washed once visibly dirty. Pyjamas, if worn, are washed when visibly dirty

DS's clothes get washed when visibly dirty - school uniform is washed daily as he always comes home muddy/dinner dripped down his jumper. Depending if he has been out playing or not his jean/joggers and tee-shirts can usually get worn twice (I frequently 'rescue' clean clothes from his washing pile).

DH will wear a fresh shirt daily but alternate trousers (navy/black/grey depending on the shirt).

Bedding is washed weekly/fortnightly depending on soiling
Towels are washed weekly/fortnightly

My washing machine has a 30 minute, 30 degree cycle most of my washing is done on. Towels and bedding are done on a 60 degree

QuixoticQuokka · 15/02/2020 12:47

So ghastly manmade fibre with all that entails being washed weekly with the environmental damage that entails. No. I wash it at half term, so six times a year, it's worn five days a week over a shirt (DC doesn't wear a jumper). I don't have a choice of the fabric.

drina27 · 15/02/2020 12:51

Once.

QuixoticQuokka · 15/02/2020 12:52

Most school trousers are synthetic too, so I don't see the difference between them and a blazer. They are covered with mud by the end of a week if not sooner, so I wash one or two pairs of those weekly.

tempnamechange98765 · 15/02/2020 12:55

Totally depends on the weather and what it is. In the winter, jumpers/long sleeve tops definitely get more than one wear, unless it's a really cheapy fabric in which case I'll only wear once before a wash.

In the summer, t shirts or vest tops if it's hot will only get one wear. In a heatwave EVERYTHING tends to get one wear.

I always give the armpits on things a sniff Wink

Kids wise I have two DS', 4 and 1. 1 year old everything goes in the wash after 1 wear as he's a dribble monster, crawling etc. 4 year old I check if it's dirty or not, and he'll wear things more than once if not (excluding pants/socks).

Sarahlou63 · 15/02/2020 13:01

Whenever I have a shower, which is generally twice a week, everything goes in the laundry basket. Can't believe the enormous waste of water, power and soap in this thread Sad

Kittensinmysupper · 15/02/2020 13:06

Unless you are exceptionally sweaty /do a heavy manual job or work outside and get filthy.. the looppp all this wear once and wash is extremely wasteful.

lljkk · 15/02/2020 13:14

I go on smell and how they look.
Teen DD thinks she's a once-washer. Actually, we pick items out we know she barely wore & hand them back merely pretending we washed them. She never figures this out. I bet her keen-ness for frequent washing will abate after she moves out (did with older DS).

raspberryk · 15/02/2020 13:31

Some things need washing after 1 wear, rarely does a top/t shirt after being worn all day not have a slight tinge of body odour even with daily showers and anti persperant deodorant. Certainly not for dp.
An hour of dog walking means we have also sweated enough for a clean top. Those of you who don't wash clothes daily are you completely inactive?
My leggings and tights need washing after one wear as do most dresses.
I avoid jeans for dirty activities generally so I do get a few wears out of those, 3 or 4 max.
Cardigans and jumpers can sometimes be worn twice, so could a skirt if I ever wore them.
I genuinely can't understand how you'd get away with washing less, but it probably explains the smelly people I come across Envy < obvs not envy!
I've never heard of people owning wardrobes full of these non washable and apparently smell and dirt repellent wool dresses and trousers, cashmere jumpers, merino cardigans that get washed once a year.
It is the norm of people I know - friends and family to wash their clothes regularly.

Bisforbert · 15/02/2020 13:34

Pants and socks once, everything else when it smells or looks dirty.
A lot of things give me the rage nowadays but one thing is the message on some clothes labels that says " if it's not dirty wash it at thirty" how about " if it's not dirty don't wash it" but I suppose it benefits retailers if people are fading and wearing out clothes by washing them when they don't need to.

Louisaweezer · 15/02/2020 13:47

@raspberryk crikey!! Have you seen a GP about the sweating? What a waste of water and detergent!

QuixoticQuokka · 15/02/2020 13:59

An hour of dog walking means we have also sweated enough for a clean top. Those of you who don't wash clothes daily are you completely inactive? No, I don't work up a sweat walking at this time of year though. I regularly hike 5 or 6 plus miles at 3 to 4 miles per hour depending on the terrain.

raspberryk · 15/02/2020 14:00

@Louisaweezer - no why would I? It's a normal bodily function, not sure I know anyone who doesn't work up a sweat after an hour's exercise. This is not a stroll in the park it would be a fairly decent pace - I would struggle to hold a conversation the whole way, cover a few miles, and I get hot. Therefore sweat happens. Surely this is normal?

Skyejuly · 15/02/2020 14:04

I would never re wear stuff I have walked far or excersised in.

wonkylegs · 15/02/2020 14:05

No hard and fast rules
Depends on what it's been worn for, how messy work/ I've / kids have been, how hot and sweaty I've been (I'm generally cold rather than hot) and if I've been around any smells (smoke / greasy smells / pollution etc)

Jeans can be a couple of days
Pjs a couple of wears (I wear pants under)
Vest tops/ t-shirts / shirts tend to just be a single wear
Socks and pants once
Bras 1/2 wears

Persu · 15/02/2020 14:05

When dirty/smelly.

Jeans, at least a week. Tops, like a fleece or shirt, maybe 4/5 wears. Except my exercise gear, which I wash after ever wear coz it's sweaty and gross. Fresh underwear daily, bras though...4/5 days.

Basically whenever an item doesn't feel clean, it gets washed. I do think it's too much to wash everything after just one wear, but each to their own.

Louisaweezer · 15/02/2020 14:07

i walk over 2 hours a day and don’t work up a sweat at all even when I’m wearing 2/3 layers. I’m a HCP and personally I think that’s quite a lot of sweat. How old are you do you mind me asking? It could be a hormonal thing but to me, that sounds like too much sweat if it’s causing you to have to wash your clothes so often.

QuixoticQuokka · 15/02/2020 14:11

I would never re wear stuff I have walked far or excersised in. Not even for the same activity? I wear hiking trousers and a merino top, they are re worn many times, but I wear everyday clothes before and after.

LolaSmiles · 15/02/2020 14:24

An hour of dog walking means we have also sweated enough for a clean top. Those of you who don't wash clothes daily are you completely inactive?
Nope. I'm moderately active most days and I wouldn't sweat walking the dog for an hour.
I only get sweaty enough to warrant changing a top if i've been to the gym, taken the dogs for a morning hiking in the hills, other exercise, it's a hot day, or I've been stuck somewhere with the heating on high.

I wonder temperature the daily washers have their houses during the day. My house is only heated to 18 degrees during the day. With a poorly baby we've had it warmer and I'm washing a lot more because I'm so warm, despite walking around in just one layer.

raspberryk · 15/02/2020 14:37

I'm early 30's but I've always been the same , even when young, slim and fit. I'd always be stripping off down to a thin top during horse riding lessons by 20 mins in even in mid winter as a child.
It's not like I sweat without being hot, I just think I overheat easily/quickly.
I can't stand a hot house, despite getting cold hands and feet my body is usually hot.
I'm a window open in the bedroom during winter and doors and windows open when I'm doing housework in a T shirt as otherwise I'm too hot.
I always put it down to growing up in houses with no central heating.

Alsohuman · 15/02/2020 14:41

Those of you who don't wash clothes daily are you completely inactive?

Nope. At least an hour’s dog walking every day. I don’t sweat though, never have.

SpottyShoeBow · 15/02/2020 14:53

We've had the threads of competitive under eating, under showering.. Now it's competitive under laundering. None of these things are a bloody competition!

KatherineJaneway · 15/02/2020 14:55

Depends but in the majority once. I wash items when they need to be washed.

QuixoticQuokka · 15/02/2020 14:56

We've had the threads of competitive under eating, under showering.. Now it's competitive under laundering. None of these things are a bloody competition! Equally we've had competitive over eating, over showering and over laundering.
