Jeans/Trousers /skirt possibly two days.. Top one day, jumper/cardi possibly two. Depends wether it has absorbed cooking smells etc.

This time of year I'll wear clothes 2 or 3 times before washing. In the summer probably only once.

This should depend on quite a few factors -

  1. have you spilt anything on it
  2. have you been frying stuff or been nearby, especially onions
  3. do you smoke
  4. have you been especially sweaty

In any of the above cases, wash after a wear. Pants and socks obviously the same - although as I only have one bra that fits it goes several days. PJs, a few days. Jeans several days.
Otherwise, people wash clothes far too obsessively imo and also use too much detergent etc- you need far less than the manufacturers say.
Find a balance between reasonably clean and consideration for the environment.

Jesus, no wonder there's an eco-crisis!

I wash jeans every 5 or 6 washes, I think. Basically when the knees go baggy. I don't wear them every day though so they might keep going for weeks. Obviously if they're noticably grubby I'll wash them sooner. Tops like thermal vests and t-shirts and tunic tops probably wash after 1 or 2 washes - sadly, as I get more perimenopausal, my sweat stinks by the end of the day. I use Mitchum deodorant and people assure me I don't smell, but finding I can't really wear skin-hugging tops more than once or twice. Sad Dresses, which I mostly wear, I'll wash if dirty or they're armpit-hugging. In winter I wear dresses with long-sleeved thermal tops underneath so I won't wash the dress after just one wear.

Jumpers and cardis (only wool) I will wash when they're dirty or if I can detect an odour. Woollens really don't need washing that frequently as they shed odours and light dirt, and since I hand-wash all woollens I try to avoid it too often!

Underwear obviously I wash after one wear apart from bras and tights. I'm one of the Filthy Unwashed Bra brigade! Grin But if it whiffs I wash. PJs now I wash the tops after one wear because like I say, perimenopause is kicking my ass and I frequently wake up soaked in sweat.

Don't any of you worry about electricity/water bills, microplastics shed into water, detergent use, etc?? Not to mention the vast time it takes to do laundry if you're washing everything every wear.

I wear an apron work in the kitchen. I ventilate the kitchen when I’m cooking.

I wear anti perspirant and have a daily shower with real soap ( not shower gel ) so I don’t smell.

I wear old clothes for dirty work like gardening. I spot clean items where possible.

Thankfully this means I don’t have to wash my clothes half as much as most of the people on this thread. At clothes last more than one wear except socks, underwear and school shirts / t shirts for teenagers.

Some of you sounds completely mad TBH. You must have money to burn and not enough hobbies.

Jeans - worn for a week or two unless visibly dirty
T-shirts - worn for two or three days in winter, one or two in summer
Pyjamas - worn for two or three days
Jumpers - washed when visibly dirty
Coats - washed if wearer has fallen in the mud
School blazer - washed at half term
PE/Games kit - washed at half term and when it's put in the laundry in between

Depends on the item of clothing really but generally I wear them until they're either visibly dirty or they're smelly. Jeans = a week or more. Work trousers = a day. Tops = once or twice. Jumpers = two or three times. Washing clothes too often ruins them and isn't good for the environment.

Other than pyjamas and underwear (including leggings), until they smell or are stained/marked.
It seems wasteful to me to be washing after single wears unless they are genuinely sweaty/marked.

People on this thread are washing their clothes way too frequently. You're environmental nightmares. Jeans shouldnt be washed often at all!

I wash my clothes when they are dirty/ whiffy! The less washing the better for their longevity (and my finances)!

Until they're dirty.
I don't sweat much, so unless my clothes have a stain or smell strongly of cooking or wood smoke, I will hang them back up for another wear. I'm sure some of my work dresses get worn once every few weeks, and get hung back up 6 or 7 times before getting washed.
The DC (6 and 9) wear uniform until it gets marked, which tends to be more frequently. They might wear 3 polo shirts in a week, two cardigans or sweaters, and two pairs of trousers.
Honestly, those who say once; I really think that, unless you are especially grubby or have a problem with excessive secretions, you are overdoing it. Women seeking virtue in over-laundering, over-cleaning, over-grooming, over-shopping, over-replacing household goods etc have a lot to answer for environmentally.

Jeans 5 days, but often if I'm indoors I will change into tracksuit bottoms then put jeans back on if I need to go back out so don't really wear them a full day.

Tops once, hoodies two-three times.

Kids wear their clothes once they are messy little things Grin

I used to wash everything after one wear (except jeans maybe), but now I am trying to be greener and wash stuff less. Most things (except pants) probably four or five times, unless I chuck something down it.

I've just invested in a spin dryer, so that I can hand wash more, it's brilliant.

This is why synthetics are bad, jeans with elastic in go baggy after a few wears, nylon and acrylic don't let the skin breathe and smell sweaty, so all need washing more frequently, they also look shabby more quickly so need replacing more often.

They also feel utterly rubbish.

Seconded. I can't get over thinking a skirt needs washing after one wear. Are you particularly grubby/ sweaty/ incapable of feeding yourseves without spilling food/ allergic to soap and water?

For those of you who have partners who wear tailored suits they can't possibly send them to the cleaners after one wear?

Everything once - far too much washing but I hate things not being clean

I am another in the wear it several times camp. Only pants and socks get one wear. Nighties a week. Tops get 3 wears. Trousers 4 and jumpers are worn for more than a week. I think some people create pointless washing for the sake of it.

Report
couchlover · 14/02/2020 21:00

Depends very much on what it is, how long the wear was, what time of year and probably most importantly, what I ate in it!

A lot of things I can get two wears from, jumpers possibly more, jeans lots more times.

Jeans - 7-10 wears. I don’t wear everyday and do air them out too so I could probably go longer.
Tights - 1
Bra - 2-3 As I don’t sweat much normally and don’t wear them at night
Coat - 365.

Think of the planet . . . it really is unnecessary to wash jeans after 1 wear. Mine go at least 10 days. Tops a couple of wears, sweaters maybe after half a dozen or so wears, bras 4 or 5 days. It really is silly to wash things after 1 wear. Even my stinky mucking out clothes last more than a week, they just get slung in the garage for the next day. And I handwash most stuff in the summer 😃

I wash clothes when they are dirty or smelly.

Report
dudsville · 14/02/2020 21:18

Hardly ever in winter. Wool and thick cotton trousers and skirts, that are loose fitting, that don't get food, etc., on them get washed end of season. I tend to wear duties tights though, so there's a layer between pants and skirts/trousers.

In summer practically nothing gets more then one wear, even though it's all thin cotton. Partly because of sweat, even if just mildly tacky skin, and partly because it needs an iron.

Once. I occasionally rewear a cardigan as I don't keep them in for long, and I will wear a nighty for a second night but not pyjama bottoms. I wear bras for 1 day and then switch, but will wear it again before I wash it, maybe 2-3 wears but never on consecutive days. Otherwise everything else is every wear and I include jeans in that.

My dressing gown gets washed about once a year though Blush

My kids it's after every wear, often my toddlers coat and shoes need a wash and everything. He has 3 coats for this very reason.
