To wonder if a lot of people are still against drag ?

Shows like Drag Race have become incredibly popular. I have tickets to see the live show in May, and I think drag culture is amazing. It shows how far we have come that such a show is so popular on TV, and I think it should be celebrated.
I asked some friends if they wanted to come to the show with me and they very firmly and quickly told me that they were not fans of that sort of stuff.
When I was a teenager, I used to think Drag Queens were just some middle-aged men on Canal street with a blonde wig and high heels, and I was quite intimidated and scared of them in a way. I wonder if some people still feel that way, and don't judge them for it, just curious.

Im not going to put up with this bitchiness

You're now referring to women debating something as 'bitchiness'.

Seriously?

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 15/02/2020 21:17

The title of this thread is (in full)

Am I being unreasonable to wonder if a lot of people are still against drag?

No you are not unreasonable - a lot of people ARE against it.

So what's your problem with the comments again? Did you want to be unreasonable?

Notimeforaname · 15/02/2020 21:25

Each to their own. We must all be free to have our own opinion. For me, as a woman, it does not bother me or insult me.

Usemyname123 · 15/02/2020 21:37

Looks like the PP has disappeared which is hardly surprising since a lot of PPs ganged up on him/her in a way.
Each to their own, agree with PP we must be free to have our own opinion.

Usemyname123 · 15/02/2020 21:38

The OP* sorry

Usemyname123 · 15/02/2020 21:43

On Drag Race they also feature a lot of semi-naked young men known as the 'Pit Crew'.

GCAcademic · 15/02/2020 21:46

Agreed. And, on a discussion forum, it’s normal for people to be asked to justify their opinions and to engage with questions about those opinions. Ignoring questions, simply repeating the same thing again and again, and then throwing a tantrum does not a discussion make.

I think I'm the only person who hasn't seen this! (Despite being one of the drag apologists Grin)

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 15/02/2020 22:05

I have never seen it, clicked on it, searched for it (or for similar), but I can't get the BBC to stop shoving it in my face every bloody time I open iPlayer!

For an otherwise excellent and frontrunning streaming platform, their inability to offer a "no thanks" personalisation feature is weird.

M3lon · 15/02/2020 22:30

Oh god..so now taping your boobs and strapping a fake cock on is also 'brave and raw'?

The mind boggles.

There is no issue whatsoever with women dressing up as caricatures of men, or men dressing up as caricatures of women. Everyone can wear whatever the hell they like and do their make up how they like too.

Cheerleading people who do this as 'brave', on the other hand, is frankly very odd behaviour...and when so many people involved in this (if the ru-paul selection is anything to go by) have mental health issues or deep emotional scars of one sort or another, it feel double inappropriate to be a 'fan'.

I wonder - if they weren't all in pain, and misunderstood, rejected by their families and desperately seeking acceptance, would anyone still be watching? And if that's the reason your watching, isn't it nothing but mass market pity porn?

VeryBowie · 15/02/2020 22:43

Wow...just wow. The OP has been absolutely bear baited here. Vile.

Whatever happened to a good old fashioned debate and being able to have opinions? This is pure bullying. OP if you're still reading this I hope you are ok. Don't let anonymous internet trolls get to you.

WhatKatyDidNot · 15/02/2020 22:47

I see this thread is going well!

Usemyname123 · 15/02/2020 22:48

I agree things got out of hand. There have been some very important points made about why drag is considered offensive (the Molestia Child thing is absolutely disgusting and should be banned from performing under that name). And also very interesting points for drag.

I think the OP became a bit defensive and annoyed for sure, but saying that those who like drag are not intelligent, hunnish, view women negatively etc. Is just really uncalled for.

Winesalot · 15/02/2020 22:53

The world of drag is very big. I have a question for all those who say they know someone who does it. Just because the person you know who performa drag does not necessarily perpetuate the misogynistic elements of drag, do you acknowledge that too many of the performances do. Do you not think it derogatory that terms like fish are used? Even on TV shows? And if you do, why are you so prepared to ignore this ?

Luckystar777 · 15/02/2020 23:00

@INXS998 can you link to some videos of drag acts you like please? I want to see what it is you like.

Notimeforaname · 15/02/2020 23:27

Winesalot, many of my friends are drag performers.
Entertaining, talented men and women in many areas.
The word Fish does not bother me either. New words and phrases are constantly being introduced. It's just a word.

Notimeforaname · 15/02/2020 23:30

Im not ignoring anything. It simply does not bother nor offend me in the slightest.

Hi @luckystar777

There are some good examples here

Thelnebriati · 16/02/2020 01:22

If I want to see a celebration of women, I can look at the achievements of women.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 16/02/2020 01:48

People are so quick to accuse people who have different opinions of being nasty bullies.

It's 2020 and women who refuse to be belittled by men are accused of being bitches. Kind of says it all really, doesn't it?

Don't post a thread on a controversial topic if you're incapable of defending your point and of having an adult conversation without resorting to petty insults and then playing the victim.

You've combined a discussion about drag queens and transgender people - they're two completely unrelated topics.

You haven't explained (sufficiently) how drag celebrates women, or isn't misogynistic.

You completely ignored the bit about drag queens reading to children in libraries too. What do you think about that?
Should we take our children to see them because they're 'empowering women'?
Should we let our children roll around on the floor with a man in makeup? Would you let your child roll around on the floor with the same man if he wasn't wearing makeup?

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 01:53

Take your child if you want. Don't if you don't.

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 01:54

It's that simple.

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 01:55

I've seen children at parties roll around the floor with a clown... A man in make up.. Grin

Winesalot · 16/02/2020 02:51

Notimeforaname thank you for answering. I understand that you don’t find the word fish offensive, but as you can see many women do. And just because drag queens use the term actually has not changed the word at all.

peanutbuttercup Glad to hear your friend found a place to use his talent. I, on the other hand, have heard it used by participants of the Ru Paul show. And I hadn’t heard it for a long time. Probably due to it being decades since seeing my last one. Now that I have, I have heard it more often in association with other drag. I guess my question remains in relation how you continue to the support genre knowing that it does treat women this way?
