To wonder if a lot of people are still against drag ?

Shows like Drag Race have become incredibly popular. I have tickets to see the live show in May, and I think drag culture is amazing. It shows how far we have come that such a show is so popular on TV, and I think it should be celebrated.
I asked some friends if they wanted to come to the show with me and they very firmly and quickly told me that they were not fans of that sort of stuff.
When I was a teenager, I used to think Drag Queens were just some middle-aged men on Canal street with a blonde wig and high heels, and I was quite intimidated and scared of them in a way. I wonder if some people still feel that way, and don't judge them for it, just curious.

@12345kbm

Exactly. Spot on.

TaniaArse · 16/02/2020 14:39

I'm with you @notimeforaname. Although I've not noticed drag queens calling women (as a class?) cunts, and I don't remember ever hearing fish being flung about.

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 14:42

Absolutely entitled to your opinion!!

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 14:45

but this thread is about drag performers and not racism.

Egghead68 · 16/02/2020 14:49

What @12345kbm said.

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 14:50

TaniaArse, same here. Never heard a drag queen call a woman a cunt. I've heard them call men some mad names though Grin

MondeoFan · 16/02/2020 14:51

I think it's awful and not even remotely funny. I was always a fan of Julian Clary though.
Hate men dressing up as women full stop.

Thinkingabout1t · 16/02/2020 14:57

INXS, how is drag celebrating women? It’s just men dressed in the old sexist stereotype of femininity, but they can stop any time they like and claim their normal male privileges.
Were the Black-and-white Minstrels celebrating black people?

MsTSwift · 16/02/2020 15:27

Even as a child I felt uncomfortable at the pantomime dames. Seems an odd thing for a woman to enjoy and defend. So many other art forms in the world why defend this to the hilt and challenge those of us that don’t like it? Odd hill to die on

isabellerossignol · 16/02/2020 15:31

I don't much like pantomime dames either, always found them creepy. And I've never taken my kids to a pantomime either (although I admit that I have not actually stopped them going when their school took them, because I didn't want them to feel they were missing out on something that their classmates were getting to enjoy. So I'll hold my hands up to hypocrisy there).

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 15:34

Drag has drastically changed from "men dressed in the old sexist stereotype of femininity"
Perhaps it's been a long time since you've been to a drag show...its not old men in caberet style beaded dresses anymore. Well, not in my experience anyway but I understand that won't be the same experience for all.

Fairenuff · 16/02/2020 15:53

but this thread is about drag performers and not racism

Doh!

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 15:54

Some fine words there, Fairenuff Grin

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 15:55

Great input Smile
I am not angry nor mad at anyone's opinion. I'm happy we have a place to all express how we feel.

MsTSwift · 16/02/2020 16:09

I resent drag being on tv though especially bbc as we basically paying for it. Easy to avoid when in clubs or theatres but don’t appreciate that rupaul thing being trailed all the time rammed down our throats

Fairenuff · 16/02/2020 16:12

It's been explained in detail why womanface is as offensive as blackface but some people just don't get it. I'm not going to spell it out again. Hence the Doh Grin

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 16:26

Womanface GrinNo that's fine! Your opinion is your opinion. Absolutely acceptable. As is mine.
I don't need it spelled out for me but thank you for investing so much in meWink

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 16:27

It's offensive to some, not for others. That's very clear.

Fairenuff · 16/02/2020 16:30

It's offensive to some, not for others. That's very clear.

You could say the same of racism.

Notimeforaname · 16/02/2020 16:31

I could. But thats not what I said.

FloraGreysteel · 16/02/2020 18:08

12345 woah, yes, that's pretty much how I see it!👏

AngelsSins · 16/02/2020 18:45

Whereas society at large, expected you to act in a certain way, especially during the time when being gay was illegal for men. Being 'different', being ostracised et al can make your mental health fragile and Drag is no different in that respect

Right and how do you think it was for women, especially lesbians? Any ideas?!

VeryBowie · 16/02/2020 19:27

BTW, "Fish" is not used a derogatory expression on the drag scene. Just sayin'.

Russellbrandshair · 16/02/2020 19:32

What does it refer to then? Specifically?

12345kbm · 16/02/2020 19:34

@AngelsSins How is that relevant to the discussion? I'm not sure I understand what you are asking.
