To wonder if a lot of people are still against drag ?

Shows like Drag Race have become incredibly popular. I have tickets to see the live show in May, and I think drag culture is amazing. It shows how far we have come that such a show is so popular on TV, and I think it should be celebrated.
I asked some friends if they wanted to come to the show with me and they very firmly and quickly told me that they were not fans of that sort of stuff.
When I was a teenager, I used to think Drag Queens were just some middle-aged men on Canal street with a blonde wig and high heels, and I was quite intimidated and scared of them in a way. I wonder if some people still feel that way, and don't judge them for it, just curious.

MrsMummy
Can you clarify? What do you mean by 'hateful?' Many posters object to drag because they think it is a caricature of femininity Can explain why that interpretation is inaccurate? Can you also explain how is drag qualitatively different from Rachel Dolezal's claims to be African American?

Dozer · 15/02/2020 20:46

“Whinged at”: what a respectful way to describe posts.

fuckitywhy · 15/02/2020 20:46

For some men, being "trans" definitely is a result of their fetish - look up autogynephilia. They get sexually aroused by imagining being fucked as a woman. It often starts from "sissy" porn apparently, and it's something that's acknowledged and talked about on reddit support groups for the condition for example.

dustibooks · 15/02/2020 20:47

Not particularly my cup of tea, but each to their own, that's what I say.

cavabiensepasser · 15/02/2020 20:47

Women not lining up to kiss men's arses is hateful.

It's hateful to belittle other people, transphobia is hateful.

And drag is different as these people aren't walking around claiming to be women but are impersonating as an art form. Drag has been around for centuries and personally I find it very fascinating.

If you and others disagree, that's fine but some of the comments on this thread have been unnecessarily aggressive.

fuckitywhy · 15/02/2020 20:48

I don't think the OP was ever out to have their mind changed or to debate, to be fair, just to wonder if their friends were weirdos for hating the idea.

Pettyargument · 15/02/2020 20:49

MrsGridah Classy and hilarious

I guess you had to be there, it wasn’t hilarious at all, it actually felt really raw and brave and not a side of drag we usually see

GCAcademic · 15/02/2020 20:49

Oh dear, now you’re having a tantrum because you can’t back up any of your assertions, OP. Still no answer to my questions. Never mind, I didn’t expect there to be.

Dozer · 15/02/2020 20:49

Which posts are transphobic and/or in breach of MN guidelines?

Russellbrandshair · 15/02/2020 20:50

After 22 pages, still not one explanation how bitchy drag is “celebrating” women.....

MrsGrindah · 15/02/2020 20:50

Raw and brave? What on earth is brave about that?

fuckitywhy · 15/02/2020 20:51

Ah no, you can't explain it, it's just a feeling - which can't be questioned or you're being mean.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 15/02/2020 20:52

And drag is different [to trans] as these people aren't walking around claiming to be women

Tell that to Stonewall and their massive umbrella and and they'll have you on the wall quick smart for such horrifically bigoted,
violent remarks.

GCAcademic · 15/02/2020 20:52

Women not lining up to kiss men's arses is hateful.

Nail on head.

Notimeforaname · 15/02/2020 20:52

This is insane. Its performance art. Nothing to do with being transgender.
My best friend is a drag performer and an incredibly talented make up artist and dancer. A champion dancer at that. This is art. And entertainment.

Dozer · 15/02/2020 20:53

So said the “black and white minstrels” and similar.

INXS998 · 15/02/2020 20:53

@GCAcademic youre a lovely person too 😊

cavabiensepasser · 15/02/2020 20:54

Black and white Minstrels was supposedly Entertainment back in the day too.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 15/02/2020 20:54

This is insane. Its performance art. Nothing to do with being transgender.

Again, the umbrella begs to differ. Are you saying you know better?

To wonder if a lot of people are still against drag ?
