To wonder if a lot of people are still against drag ?

Shows like Drag Race have become incredibly popular. I have tickets to see the live show in May, and I think drag culture is amazing. It shows how far we have come that such a show is so popular on TV, and I think it should be celebrated.
I asked some friends if they wanted to come to the show with me and they very firmly and quickly told me that they were not fans of that sort of stuff.
When I was a teenager, I used to think Drag Queens were just some middle-aged men on Canal street with a blonde wig and high heels, and I was quite intimidated and scared of them in a way. I wonder if some people still feel that way, and don't judge them for it, just curious.

Oh well, that’s me off to ‘glorify in my womanly essence...‘ (otherwise know as getting under the kitchen sink to sort out the blocked u bend again)

MimiLaRue · 15/02/2020 19:24

Perhaps we could set up our own drag act if only we were talented enough to dress up and put on make up

Yes! Such a shame we dont have a penis- our makeup would look rubbish without one. What could have been eh? Grin

INXS998 · 15/02/2020 19:36

It's not only drag queens who refer to each other as 'she' and 'bitches'. I've heard several gay men do that who are not drag queens. They are not being misogynistic.

Anyway, there's debating and there's some real venom on here. Rudeness towards other posters who are sharing an opinion, implying they are not intelligent. No need for that whatsoever.

fuckitywhy · 15/02/2020 19:44

Yeah, I hate to break it to you, but they're not being pro-female either

12345kbm · 15/02/2020 20:07

Just because a man is gay doesn't mean he likes women. A man who only refers to women as a 'bitch' or a group of women as a 'pussy party' or a 'seafood platter' doesn't like them very much. It's not said with affection.

Playing nice means that this crap continues and before you know it, you're reduced to describing yourself as a 'menstruator' in order to retain what few rights you have.

Winesalot · 15/02/2020 20:07

Why do you think calling each other bitches is not misogynistic? Please help me to understand your thinking ?

When my DD came home calling her friends baitches, I asked her why. ‘Don’t you know Mum, we women have taken it back and use it for empowerment!!!’ I explained to her that it was still a perjorative to so many women in the world. Women who are not allowed to have any voice, not allowed to go to school to get an education, not allowed in their home when they are menstruating. Was she speaking for their empowerment? Was it helping them?

I am interested why you think two gay men using it is not misogynistic?

Pettyargument · 15/02/2020 20:13

I haven’t read the whole thread but just wanted to add that I went to a drag show last month as a friend was performing for the first time (gay male in drag as a woman). However, the show also included a woman doing faux queen and actually singing, a guy just doing a dance as a guy and a female to male drag act. The female to male was an absolute standout. She/he? was a lumberjack and stripped down to tapped boobs and a strap on penis and won the judge and crowd vote. I have never watched rupauls drag race or anything like that but would people feel differently if these shows had proper inclusion like the one I went to?

GCAcademic · 15/02/2020 20:27

@INXS998 Anyway, there's debating and there's some real venom on here. Rudeness towards other posters who are sharing an opinion, implying they are not intelligent

I’ve repeatedly asked you to explain what, specifically, drag “celebrates” and “respects” (your words) about women. Please detail some of those things. It’s not surprising that posters are inferring things about your intelligence given your apparent inability to back up your assertions.

INXS998 · 15/02/2020 20:28

There has been an episode of Drag Race where women were dressed as men.
Stop thinking you are better than us for being against drag ! 'I hate to break it to you' tssk..
We respect your opinion and have argued our points too, you are implying that we are stupid and coming across as aggressive and angry in many posts.

Classy and hilarious

INXS998 · 15/02/2020 20:30

What a disgusting thing to say. I will not let anyone question my intelligence. If I believe drag celebrates beauty and femininity that's my choice. I have said that some of it is offensive, now you get off your high horse and think about why you need to insult people, the issue lies with you.

OP posts:
cavabiensepasser · 15/02/2020 20:32

How exactly does it celebrate beauty and femininity? You made a statement, you should be able to defend it, otherwise your point is invalid.
And if drag 'celebrates women' (which it really, really doesn't), why doesn't it celebrate old women, or 'unfuckable' women, or women who don't wear makeup?

VeryBowie · 15/02/2020 20:33

@INXS998 agreed, not even read all this thread but can easily see there is some nastiness on here. Thought women are meant to support each other not drag each other down and be horrible about their different opinions. 🤷‍♀️

Mrsmummy90 · 15/02/2020 20:35

The talent I was referring to is makeup (I'm impressed when both men and women have fantastic make up skills) and it's not just on the face, a lot of them use prosthetics and body art, designing and sewing their outfits, they have dancers, singers, circus acts, contortionism etc.
It's not just Gary from the pub in a wig, singing Sweet Caroline!

BovaryX · 15/02/2020 20:35

If I believe drag celebrates beauty and femininity that's my choice

Nope. That's your opinion What that says about your understanding of aesthetics? That's open to debate.....

cavabiensepasser · 15/02/2020 20:35

Erm, I'll quite happily support women when support is needed, but supporting women doesn't mean endless gushing, hunning and 'YASS QUEEN' ing over anything any woman says, even if she's talking nonsense.

INXS998 · 15/02/2020 20:36

@verybowie thank you for your support.
Some drag queens dress as older ladies, or middle-aged. Look at Charlie Hides, Ben de la Creme, Kasha Davies.
I think that many do drag because they think women are beautiful and they aspire to be like them. Some later realise they want to transition to female.

INXS998 · 15/02/2020 20:38

@Mrsmummy90 i fully agree with you.
And to the PP, it's both my choice and my opinion.

So many hateful people on here

Babybel90 · 15/02/2020 20:41

I think that many do drag because they think women are beautiful and they aspire to be like them.

Some of us don’t think that being beautiful is our only or most important achievement and would rather be celebrated for the things we do than the way we look. HTH.

fuckitywhy · 15/02/2020 20:42

Christ, so now its hateful to say "men dressing up and taking the piss out of women is not okay".

Mrsmummy90 · 15/02/2020 20:43

Actual it's hateful to say that being trans is a fetish

INXS998 · 15/02/2020 20:43

Oh, as if that's all that's been said 😂
