To wonder if a lot of people are still against drag ?

Shows like Drag Race have become incredibly popular. I have tickets to see the live show in May, and I think drag culture is amazing. It shows how far we have come that such a show is so popular on TV, and I think it should be celebrated.
I asked some friends if they wanted to come to the show with me and they very firmly and quickly told me that they were not fans of that sort of stuff.
When I was a teenager, I used to think Drag Queens were just some middle-aged men on Canal street with a blonde wig and high heels, and I was quite intimidated and scared of them in a way. I wonder if some people still feel that way, and don't judge them for it, just curious.

So typical - I have no way of debating this so I’m going to resort to insults and flouncing. Pathetic.

Mammatino · 15/02/2020 16:07

About 15 years ago I had to go to one of those god awful hen nights that start off with a bunch of oiled up men waving their bits at you and doing an odd pumped up dance thing. I went outside and smoked through that and came back for the drag act. An enormously over weight 50 something hobbled onto the stage in high heels, fishnets and a mouth like a wound. He proceeded to screech about his effing fanny, his saggy c**t hurting because he was on the rag and telling us how to suck a cock properly. I left.

I absolutely understand people admiring the skill that goes into the look, the dress etc but please please know that it's a man showing you how to "do woman", because you can't do it as good as he can. It is mysogynistic. It isn't inclusive of you. the concept is about either parodying womanhood or just doing it better than you. It's not nice. So people don't have to be nice about it. Defining a woman by her filthy smelly c**t is appalling. Fishy for goodness sake?

I am a huge fan of drag, as are my family and friends. Even my husband watches drag race with me and has been to a show with me before.

Drag has evolved so much over the years and there is sooooo much talent involved.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 15/02/2020 16:24

and there is sooooo much talent involved.

Like what exactly?

Even my husband watches drag race

What do you mean "even my husband"? Why is that significant?

Grumpelstilskin · 15/02/2020 16:32

What talent is involved?

TaniaArse · 15/02/2020 16:42

What talent is involved?

Dressing up, make up, impersonation, singing I guess. It does depend on the drag queen and her particular act.

MrsGrindah · 15/02/2020 16:43

Dressing up is a talent? Fuck me Id better update my cv then!

MimiLaRue · 15/02/2020 16:46

Dressing up and makeup is a "talent"? have you see drag queens? they look ridiculous - thats the entire point- they are a caricature of women.

As for the singing?- LOOOL every drag queen ive heard sounds like they gargle with jack daniels and smoke 80 a day

VeryBowie · 15/02/2020 16:50

I'd kinda say doing good make up is a talent. Although I'm absolutely SHITE at it so anyone who can apply a winged eyeliner is a genius in my book

Winesalot · 15/02/2020 16:50

So again, and again we get back to ‘let’s overlook the misogyny and the dehumanising of women to caricatures’ but so we can look at the amazing talent and fun bit. Nothing at all derogatory here...... all about fun and mayhem for all the family.

VeryBowie · 15/02/2020 16:53

@Dozer dunno about you but I'm getting Hitler vibes from that post!? Neo Nazi and all that...
Can't believe a post on drag has caused this shit storm, might get the popcorn out reading these comments Grin

WhatKatyDidNot · 15/02/2020 16:53

Drag has evolved so much over the years

I think it's devolved. From outsider humour mocking the oppressive society into cheap, commercial tat.

Russellbrandshair · 15/02/2020 16:54

Wearing makeup is a talent now? Oh, you mean what a large proportion of women do every day?- apply makeup? They wear more, heavier makeup is all. Do you also think Kim kardashian is talented?- she wears a lot of makeup and gets dressed up a lot. She must be hugely talented then too

12345kbm · 15/02/2020 16:55

I've just watched some of Drag Race on youtube as I've never seen it before. It's a bunch of blokes calling each other bitches. They wear clown make up and put each other down all the time. I also note that they talk about their Queen persona in the third person. They dress up as famous women and talk about taking it up the arse and having STDs.

I'm afraid the only talent I spotted was spite. They're very good at it.

M3lon · 15/02/2020 16:58

No No you idiots! Wearing extreme make up/sequins/high heals isn't a talent in itself....it only becomes a talent when its done by someone with a penis.

I can't believe you don't get it!

Winesalot · 15/02/2020 17:01

Ahhh! Thanks M3lon!

MimiLaRue · 15/02/2020 17:09

Sorry M3lon!

hangs head in shame

TaniaArse · 15/02/2020 17:15

Agreed that some of their make-up and singing needs work Grin. It very much depends on the drag queen, and her particular slant and abilities 🤡👹💅💃🎶💄👠

MrsGrindah · 15/02/2020 17:17

@MimiLaRue..ahem I do have to say our usernames sound a bit....draggy.. Grin

TaniaArse · 15/02/2020 17:18

MimiLaRue..ahem I do have to say our usernames sound a bit....draggy..

Ooooh - speak for yourself, duckie Hmm

MrsGrindah · 15/02/2020 17:19

What?

MimiLaRue · 15/02/2020 17:20

@mrsgrindah

haha! They do, I'm named after Tori Spelling's adorable pug (RIP) though.

MrsGrindah · 15/02/2020 17:28

And mines from People Just Do Nothing! Perhaps we could set up our own drag act if only we were talented enough to dress up and put on make up.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 15/02/2020 17:41

please know that it's a man showing you how to "do woman", because you can't do it as good as he can. It is mysogynistic. It isn't inclusive of you. the concept is about either parodying womanhood or just doing it better than you.

This sums up all of my feelings about drag, far more eloquently than I'd have been able to. It doesn't feel like a celebration of me, my womanhood or my femininity. It feels like yet another direct shot taken by yet another man.

AngelsSins · 15/02/2020 18:09

Well, I for one am not going to stop watching RuPauls Drag Race and attending drag shows to appease you neo-feminists

What a surprise that someone with your views would think the word Feminist is a insult.
