To think Labour are not a party for women/girls

Long-Bailey, Rayner and Nandy have all made public their support of a statement that demands the expulsion from the party of anyone who doesn’t agree with basically replacing current sex based rights/laws/social norms with gender/identity based rights - so if you think women are female, that female sports and prisons etc should be for females etc -then you are a transphobic bigot and should be thrown out of the party.

Argh I clicked on YABU by mistake. Sorry.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 12/02/2020 20:59

It's so painful to watch the self righteous stupidity with which they are destroying our only chance at a decent opposition to Boris.

SpindleBerry · 12/02/2020 21:00

Starmer has got to get a grip on this madness as soon as he's in

Ikeasucks · 12/02/2020 21:01

This is the Labour representative earlier today on Daily Politics Live confirming you have to conform and believe this identity ideology or you’re gone - in case anyone had any doubts mobile.twitter.com/fanny_adams28/status/1227697160185163786

While they concern themselves with this identity politics stuff over serious issues the Country is facing they are toast.
The average person on the street couldn’t care less about gender queer, non binary etc, and when they see Labour framing this as the issue of the day, you can see why they lost the last election, they don’t look like a serious party.

TheRealMcKenna · 12/02/2020 21:01

brexit really taught me a lesson about LISTENING to the other side.

Yes, this is like a ‘Gillian Duffy‘ moment all over again.

Bartlet · 12/02/2020 21:01

Why would they raise this now? Did they learn nothing about the free broadband fiasco of the GE? Stay on message about the important things which matter rather than pandering to vocal lobby groups.

EC22 · 12/02/2020 21:03

Are any of the main parties?
At least the torrid have kicked GRA reform into the long grass. Everyone else is pushing ahead with it and self ID which will devastate women’s rights.
I’m in Scotland and the SNP are very much on the same page as labour, so disheartening.

CallofDoodee · 12/02/2020 21:04

YANBU - it's absolute madness.

I'm really hoping Keir will sort things out and stop the crazies.

wonderstuff · 12/02/2020 21:05

I'm not happy about this at all. But women are disproportionately affected by austerity, we are poorer, we rely more on public services, we are more likely to be on benefits, we're more likely to be carers..
The Conservative Party have not been good for women, and those are are choices. Lots of problems with Labour, but it's a darn sight better than the alternative.

WineAndTiramisu · 12/02/2020 21:06

I think they're on the way to becoming the least electable (serious) party in the history of the UK.

Bartlet · 12/02/2020 21:08

That may be so Wonderstuff but I refuse to vote for someone who doesn’t think my fundamental rights or identity as a woman is important and that if I don’t agree with the crazy position they’ve taken then I can sod off. Way to win votes there....

Waxonwaxoff0 · 12/02/2020 21:09

I'm a lifelong Labour supporter and voting for Starmer.

But really, NONE of the major parties are good for women.

Peregrina · 12/02/2020 21:11

That's the problem though, isn't it wonderstuff? The Tories are not good for women, and unless they have a major personality transplant, aren't likely to be any time soon. But do we have to put up with this from all the Opposition parties? Come on - we are half the population, why do a few trans (men's) rights trump ours?

Binterested · 12/02/2020 21:12

I think telling women to leave a mainstream party for having views that the vast majority of the population shares puts Labour quite far out there tbh.

Bartlet · 12/02/2020 21:12

We don’t need to vote for the tories for them to win the election. Just abstain from voting in key seats will be enough. There are not enough trans people or trans allies (who don’t already vote Labour) to make up the deficit of women and our male allies repelled by their position. What are they thinking?

Binterested · 12/02/2020 21:15

There just aren’t quite enough votes available from Professors of Gender Studies at former Polytechnics to make this an election winning strategy for the Labour Party.

Courtesy of someone on Twitter but I’m using it.

ScreamingBeans · 12/02/2020 21:19

You're not wrong OP, the Labour Party are the party #forthemen-y

They have nothing to say about:

whether 7 year old girls coming out of the swimming pool should have the right to not see an adult naked penis in the next shower

whether 16 year old girls who've just gone to a spin class should have the right to change away from the male gaze

whether frail 90 year old women have the right to ask for intimate care to be done by an actual woman and not be called a bigot or a transphobe if they notice the one the agency sends has five o'clock shadow and a penis and they're therefore not comfortable with them giving them a bed bath

whether women patients having catheters removed and intimate examinations after having had an operation, should have the right to not have a male bodied person in the bed next to them

Etc etc., it goes on and on. The restrictions to our lives that self-ID threatens, is something the Labour Party simply have nothing to say about.

They can fuck off. I will never vote for them as long as they are embracing this crap. And I'm another one who has never voted for any other party in a general election until this one, when I voted for some idiot protest socialist bloke who got about 100 votes.

Skysblue · 12/02/2020 21:20

Wow. So Women’s Place is a “hate group”?
Wow.

Someone asked me for a definition of extremism the other day and my first thought was “the belief that people who disagree with your ideas don’t matter.”

There are very scary ideologies on both right and left at the moment, in which large numbers of people believe that “people who disagree with us are wrong” (a common view) “and therefore they don’t matter” (a bloody terrifying view).

Something I find very odd about the transwomen desire to invade spaces set up for biological women, is that transwomen simultaneously say that they need these spaces to feel safe, but also say that if this makes biological women feel less safe, then those women are wrong and don’t matter. Extremism.

If transpeople don’t feel safe in male spaces then create additional trans spaces. But how anyone can claim a right to make others feel unsafe in order to feel safe themselves... Broken thinking.

It does seem like no-one hates women as strongly as some gay men. Women are to be defined by what they wear and if they like traditional feminine roles. Biological women are not allowed to say what women are; this debate is to be led by transwomen ie biological men.

I’m peri menopausal with crazy hormones, and damaged by childbirth, and I know more about being female than I ever wanted to know. It has nothing to do with make up and skirts which is just as well as I’m mostly in pyjamas.

Would love to see more transwomen identifying as women with hairy legs pyjamas no make up and frizzy hair actually but that doesn’t seem to be a thing.

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 12/02/2020 21:21

YANBU. I'm so disappointed.

ScreamingBeans · 12/02/2020 21:21

And you know what else is simply enraging?

I don't think they have EVER told people to leave the party because there's no place for them there if they don't support women's rights. Or if they're racists, or homophobes, or ageist or sexist.

Only transpeople get this special treatment.

PerfectParrot · 12/02/2020 21:25

I voted labour last time despite some pretty deep misgivings. With this latest stunt I cannot hold my nose tight enough to vote for them again. Which is depressing because I'm a life long supporter with nobody else to vote for. But I'd rather spoil my ballot than vote my own sex-based rights away.

TheRealMcKenna · 12/02/2020 21:28

I don't think they have EVER told people to leave the party because there's no place for them there if they don't support women's rights. Or if they're racists, or homophobes, or ageist or sexist.

Maybe they should expel all religious groups that don’t hold their views on abortion.

Maybe they should expel all religious groups where women have to sit on one side of the meeting and men on the other.

Maybe they should expel all members who don’t believe in gay marriage and force all religious leaders to perform gay weddings.

But, no, it’s women who have to leave.

tobee · 12/02/2020 21:29

I hope this comes back to bite Long-Bailey, Rayner and Nandy on the bum!

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 12/02/2020 21:34

Another example of Labour supporting the few to the detriment of the many. Seems almost like self-sabotage! Madness!
