To want more bloody toast with my pate?!

Twinklebinkletoes · 12/02/2020 13:15

Every single time I ever get pate at a restaurant there is never enough bread/toast. Never ever ever! And it is doing my head in!

Last night I had pate and it came with a crostini the size of a 50 pence piece. Great. What am I meant to do with the remaining slab of pate on my plate? Grab my dessert spoon and scoop it directly into my mouth like some bizarre meat ice cream? Confused

My regular pub only gives two tiny triangles of toast with a massive ramekin of pate and chutney. I asked if I could be cheeky and request an extra slice of toast as there is never enough, and was told I could have an additional bread basket but they would have to charge me. No no no! I don’t want a whole bread basket (which would then be too much bread, oh the irony!), I just want one extra piece of toast because there is never enough! Just charge me for one extra slice of toast if you need to!

I don’t understand this because surely cost per gram, pate is more expensive to buy/make than bread? Especially if you are using bog standard sliced loaf and just toasting it. Yet everywhere insists on giving you a slab of pate covering half the plate which will be wasted as there’s never enough bread!

I love pate but am thinking of boycotting it forever now. Please tell me I’m not the only one! Grin

I totally and utterly agree with you. I do not want a 2 inch layer of pate on a cm square of toast.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 12/02/2020 13:21

I feel you!

Also when you have a cooked breakfast and they give you a tiny amount of butter for your toast

Also ordering soup and roll as a starter...always stingy with the butter then too

Yanbu. The cheese board at a pub with 5 big hunks of cheeses and 4 crackers surprised us recently. In fairness they supplied extra crackers when asked, but why would they think anybody is going to put 200g of cheese on one skinny little cracker?

hopeishere · 12/02/2020 13:28

Total bugbear of mine. Never enough crackers with cheese and then you look like an utter gorb asking for more.

Twinklebinkletoes · 12/02/2020 13:28

Oh yes, I forgot about cheese and crackers! That’s another one that always baffles me!

There’s a local place which charges a fortune for a ‘luxury’ full English
(all organic sausages and free range eggs and fancy mushrooms, home made black pudding etc.) It’s pretentious AF but on occasion we will go to this restaurant and DH will treat himself (I don’t care for a full English). They give you ONE slice of toast. Absolute joke for what they are charging!

You are most definitely NOT being unreasonable. There's even a hashtag devoted to this important issue 😅. #neverenoughtoast

ThisMustBeMyDream · 12/02/2020 13:28

Well pate is awful in my opinion, so I can't comment on the toast vs pate quantity issue! But YANBU about it in a general theme because it seems to be an issue across many delicious foods that served! Not enough butter for toast. Not enough beans with a cooked breakfast. Not enough gravy with a roast (that is my biggest annoyance!). Quantities are all out all over the place! Surely restaurants should know how to get a meal right?!

MontanaSkies · 12/02/2020 13:29

I agree. The hummus vs. dippers ratio is never right either. But I always ask for more bread and most places happily provide it (and don't charge extra). Helps if you're nice about it, "this pate is just so delicious I need more bread to finish it"

DontFundHate · 12/02/2020 13:30

Hmm I've never ever found this, I must use loads of pate per bite!

FraglesRock · 12/02/2020 13:31

I generally only order it in a restaurant and when explained that there's no balance between the two they usually send a bit more bread out.

ElfDragon · 12/02/2020 13:31

Oh, yes, OP, absolutely.

I love pâté, but there’s never enough bread or toast. I would happily pay for an additional (meagre) portion of toast, but don’t want an entire bread basket.

It’s so annoying, you’re not alone.

worriedmama16 · 12/02/2020 13:31

No one ever serves pate as I like it!
Never enough bread, no butter or a wedge of lemon!

TheQueef · 12/02/2020 13:32

This has happened because potted meat went out of fashion and became refined and poncy.

If we just applied the old potted meat rules we would avoid all this disappointment.

The French have a lot to answer for.

pinkdelight · 12/02/2020 13:33

Yanbu!!! This has plagued me for 40+ pate eating, toast insufficient years, and it's about time it was brought to light. Thank you!

PapayaCoconut · 12/02/2020 13:39

Same with baked camembert.

InOtterNews · 12/02/2020 13:55

YANBU! To add to the bread/toast and crackers thing - I'll also add the teaspoon of tartare sauce they serve with fish and chips.

Recently I had fish and chips in a nice (gastro) pub. To be fair I did ask them to bring extra tartare sauce - but I ended eating both and my friends (who doesn't like it)

MinesaPinot · 12/02/2020 13:59

I agree that there should be more toast with pate and more crackers with cheese.

In addition I would add that when I order smoked haddock and poached egg for breakfast, I would like a bit of haddock that is bigger than 2 inches square which seems to be the norm nowadays.

IHaveBrilloHair · 12/02/2020 14:02

Oh I happily eat the pate/cheese on its own.
Perhaps I'm weird?Confused

PurpleDaisies · 12/02/2020 14:02

I agree. I normally ask for more, much to my MIL’s horror.

woodencoffeetable · 12/02/2020 14:02

I blame the current low carb trend for everything that's wrong with the world atm

Kirschcherry · 12/02/2020 14:05

YANBU. I completely agree

Artus · 12/02/2020 14:08

See also ploughmans lunch.

TheQueef · 12/02/2020 14:08

We had it made.
The crust from the loaf carefully adorned with a scrape of best butter and an even quart inch layer of potted meat, perfection. (Potted heid and heel for you Scots)

What did we expect with things like crostini, melba toast and pate?

buttermilkwaffles · 12/02/2020 14:08

I once ordered a fish pate and got a huge ramekin of it but nothing else! Had to ask them for some bread, which then took ages to arrive. What did they expect me to do, just eat it from the ramekin with a spoon? Smile

I agree there is often not enough toast or bread, but in that case there was none whatsoever. And when they did eventually bring it there was nowhere near enough, so had to leave some of the pate.

IHaveBrilloHair · 12/02/2020 14:10

Buttermilkwaffles
I'd have eaten it with a spoon!
