To want more bloody toast with my pate?!

Every single time I ever get pate at a restaurant there is never enough bread/toast. Never ever ever! And it is doing my head in!

Last night I had pate and it came with a crostini the size of a 50 pence piece. Great. What am I meant to do with the remaining slab of pate on my plate? Grab my dessert spoon and scoop it directly into my mouth like some bizarre meat ice cream? Confused

My regular pub only gives two tiny triangles of toast with a massive ramekin of pate and chutney. I asked if I could be cheeky and request an extra slice of toast as there is never enough, and was told I could have an additional bread basket but they would have to charge me. No no no! I don’t want a whole bread basket (which would then be too much bread, oh the irony!), I just want one extra piece of toast because there is never enough! Just charge me for one extra slice of toast if you need to!

I don’t understand this because surely cost per gram, pate is more expensive to buy/make than bread? Especially if you are using bog standard sliced loaf and just toasting it. Yet everywhere insists on giving you a slab of pate covering half the plate which will be wasted as there’s never enough bread!

I love pate but am thinking of boycotting it forever now. Please tell me I’m not the only one! Grin

Yes, I hate having to ask for it, just provide it, bread is really very cheap, and better to add an extra 50p to the cost if they're really that bothered...

And yes, re gravy and a roast. As standard now when they bring it out I always just ask for more gravy immediately as there's never enough and saves the faff of flagging someone down.

@Artus I saw a thread on the Ploughmans lunch the other day! I’m ashamed to admit I thought it was a type of pie! Like a Shepard’s pie or Cottage pie!

I’ve never seen a Ploughmans on a menu in my life! And I’m 34! I’m from way down South though so maybe that’s why?

Yanbu op I had this last night in a restaurant. I'm afraid I did eat it with a spoon but would of preferred another piece of bread.

KatherineJaneway · 12/02/2020 14:25

Also when you have a cooked breakfast and they give you a tiny amount of butter for your toast

Tell me about it. One small patty for two slices. I mean, really! One piece of toast on a cooked breakfast is also awful toast is two pieces, not one.

Also agree about the gravy, there is never enough on a roast.

Blueuggboots · 12/02/2020 15:24

I have found my people!!!

RachelTension · 12/02/2020 15:29

I agree with all that's said about pate v toast portions. Also, cheese and cracker ratios. Infuriating!

BigSandyBalls2015 · 12/02/2020 15:34

I'm not keen on pate so haven't noticed his, but def to the cheese and crackers!!! Ridiculous amount of cheese, that would last a family a week, and 3 crackers!

Juliette20 · 12/02/2020 15:36

I agree, and the pate must be the expensive bit, the bread isn't. They could actually serve a bit less pate and just get the bread to pate ratio right.

Juliette20 · 12/02/2020 15:37

Another observation: only about one in ten breakfast chefs can cook a tomato properly.

Juliette20 · 12/02/2020 15:42

Also say, at the bar in the hotel they serve decent filter coffee. At breakfast, however, when it is most required to be strong, it is as weak as piss. Most 4* business hotels can general do ok restaurant food, provide a comfy bed and a reasonable room.

So the differentiation for me is: ability to cook tomatoes, make decent coffee and provide mushrooms by default as a breakfast option. Also when I ate meat, it was whether they offer black pudding.

Juliette20 · 12/02/2020 15:45

And also whether they offer water and a decent-sized tumbler to put it in. I don't want an eye bath-sized glass.

What I want in the morning: decent coffee, water in a reasonably-sized tumbler, mushrooms, eggs, beans, tomatoes, hash brown (fried bread also acceptable).

Lucked · 12/02/2020 15:48

Yes I agree, if I know I am having pate and there is bread served I hold it back. I have had much better luck asking for more crackers for the cheese though as it is not like they make them so have never been told there is a charge.

iklboo · 12/02/2020 16:14

This annoys DS as well. He loves pate but one slice of bread cut in half is not enough. He's a growing lad!

My issue is that whatever I want to order, wherever we eat, they've don't have any. It doesn't matter what time of day either. It's a conspiracy, I tell you.

BrimfulofSasha · 12/02/2020 16:34

I always think this with the veg, especially roast dinner type meals. 3 big slices of meat and one tiny stick of carrot and a sad floret of broccoli. Veg is the cheapest thing on the plate, load it up!

Cauliflowerpower · 12/02/2020 16:39

reminds me of a comedy sketch when they bring out a thimble full of ketchup to the comedian, he looks at it, sniffs it, then drinks it... looks back to the waiter and says "yes - I'll have the bottle now"! :)

@BouleBaker

I totally and utterly agree with you. I do not want a 2 inch layer of pate on a cm square of toast.

Why not? Blush

Scoobydoobywho · 12/02/2020 16:45

Not enough butter for the toast really grates my cheese. But then to put the small pat of butter you do get on top of the toast and then put the plate under a warmer, so you end up with a melted mess. 😔

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 12/02/2020 16:47

Never enough toast/crackers with pate/ cheese
Rarely enough veg
Also I never understand why steaks are always so HUGE. I don't want 10oz, 5oz is plenty. With all the trimmings still, obviously.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 12/02/2020 16:48

I hate it when there's not enough bread. I ordered a fondue recently, a massive bowl of melted cheese came with one rivita size slice of bread. And that was it. I didn't even get a spoon, I had to eat it with a fork!

Lack of veg annoys me too. Massive hunk of meat or fish, potato and then one French bean. Why? Why would I ever only want one baby carrot or one bean?

BouleBaker · 12/02/2020 16:49

Because the crunch to squish ratio is wrong!

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 12/02/2020 16:52

I do not have a problem with too big steaks Grin

Quadrangle · 12/02/2020 16:53

Yanbu

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 12/02/2020 16:53

Totally agree with you all ..we need more bread! We don;t just want it we NEED it !

Choccyp1g · 12/02/2020 16:56

Juliette20 Another observation: only about one in ten breakfast chefs can cook a tomato properly

9 out of 10 don't cook the tomatoes AT ALL!
You'd think they'd notice all the raw tomatoes left on the plates.

However, I had soup in waitrose today, and they gave me 2 pats of proper butter for one large roll. It was delicious and generous and made me very happy.
