To want more bloody toast with my pate?!

Every single time I ever get pate at a restaurant there is never enough bread/toast. Never ever ever! And it is doing my head in!

Last night I had pate and it came with a crostini the size of a 50 pence piece. Great. What am I meant to do with the remaining slab of pate on my plate? Grab my dessert spoon and scoop it directly into my mouth like some bizarre meat ice cream? Confused

My regular pub only gives two tiny triangles of toast with a massive ramekin of pate and chutney. I asked if I could be cheeky and request an extra slice of toast as there is never enough, and was told I could have an additional bread basket but they would have to charge me. No no no! I don’t want a whole bread basket (which would then be too much bread, oh the irony!), I just want one extra piece of toast because there is never enough! Just charge me for one extra slice of toast if you need to!

I don’t understand this because surely cost per gram, pate is more expensive to buy/make than bread? Especially if you are using bog standard sliced loaf and just toasting it. Yet everywhere insists on giving you a slab of pate covering half the plate which will be wasted as there’s never enough bread!

I love pate but am thinking of boycotting it forever now. Please tell me I’m not the only one! Grin

Amen, sister.

Tiger loaf too, none of this Rathbones shite.

Doggybiccys · 12/02/2020 18:40

It freaks me out! I don’t understand as the toast/bread is the cheapest part so I’m surprised it’s not the other way round. I had a portion of pate the size of a step the other week with less than a half slice of a small loaf!

Ohh this has reminded me of ordering a jacket potato in a cafe with extra butter (I explained I always have more butter than most people!) and cheese. They brought it out with 2 of those butter pats on the side. No butter at all on the potato, but they'd put the cheese on so I had to take the cheese off, add the butter then re add the cheese! Why?!?!

In a similar vein DH always complains there's never enough custard (usually about two tablespoons in the the aforementioned tiny jug) served with a lovely steamed pudding like a syrup sponge in pub-restaurants.

He always asks for extra. But then he's shameless.

Yanbu!

Ordered whole baked Camembert. Delicious but it came with ONE slice of bread cut in half! One! Wtf is the matter with people!

simplificate · 12/02/2020 19:18

oh good lord, was the slice cut in half diagonally at least???

I'm with you all on the toast / bread / carby measliness but confess to ALWAYS having loads of milk left over however tiny the jug that comes with tea or coffee.

wedding33 · 12/02/2020 19:30

I don't understand why this issues hasn't been raised in parliament.
YANBU!

independentfriend · 12/02/2020 19:43

Thought this was a weird me thing with most people liking more pate with their toast than I do!

HavelockVetinari · 12/02/2020 19:52

Thanks @iklboo you've solved a mystery of many years! I'm a Scot by blood but not by birth and it's always puzzled me.

StoneofDestiny · 12/02/2020 19:55

Totally agree - more toasts needed with paté

iklboo · 12/02/2020 19:57

@HavelockVetinari - it's a Lancs thing as well. My nana used to like a 'posh' tea of brown bread, best butter and tinned red salmon Smile

DavenotChas · 12/02/2020 19:58

Ask very seriously when ordering for a toast:pate ratio. If it's less than 2 slices, refuse it. That might make the buggers think again (or at least offer more toast)

Fannia · 12/02/2020 20:03

Maybe these chefs are on some kind of keto diet? You have a great point about the price of bread compared to the pate or cheese.

Greenpolkadot · 12/02/2020 20:07

I'm on the 'more toast' camp too. As another poster mentioned, I also squirrel back some bread from the bread basket to eat it with

What about the ratio of clotted cream and jam in a cream tea.... Are we all getting enough? " The worse one I had was a lovely thick fluffy scone but accompanied by two small ramekins of cream and jam. Only enough to paint a thin layer over the two halves. A scone need lusciousness damn it!!

Yanbu. So annoying.
I always order the cheeseboard when available and I don't think I've been given enough crackers ever. It makes no sense.
If you're having pate as a starter they don't give a lot of bread as they want you to order more stuff and not fill up on cheap bread. But a cheeseboard is the last course, there is no reason to limit the crackers. I think this is one of the most important issues of modern times.
