Acquitted but still impeached ... Trump thread 99

I’ll tell you a funny story. I’m a member of a very right-wing US politics online discussion group for kicks. The moderator of the group controls - and gets involved in - every discussion. (I should say the membership of this group is over 50K and the number of posts a day is generally 30 or so.) She’s also a typical Trumpian in that she reels off the standard “lamestream mass media” etc lines” and she mutes anyone who disagrees with her.

Anyway, I took her on eventually. She said that the Democratic candidates wanted to get rid of the Constitution. To this, I replied Trump flouts the Constitution on a regular basis. “What? Provide examples!” she replies. “Emoluments clause,” I replied. “That’s just one.”

GUYS. SHE HAD NOT HEARD OF THE EMOLUMENTS CLAUSE.

She then just spat something about she doesn’t read mass media lies and that’s why she didn’t know and muted me.

And citizen has the right to comment on anything he or she wants to; a president really ought to be more circumspect

Leannnb I understand your position, but it is “pragmatic” opinions like this that left us with Trump in the first place. I’m glad the Democrats didn’t allow his lawlessness to slip by unchallenged simply because an election was looming. I would have last respect for them if so. This is bigger than that. I’m sorry you’re not able to see that.

Across - when do 'tickets' need declaration?

AcrossthePond55 · 15/02/2020 02:52

Cozie not exactly sure what you mean. But if you mean when are the candidates selected that happens at each party's national convention which takes place after all the primaries are over. The presidential candidate is selected by vote* and VP candidate is selected by the party committee in consultation with the presidential nominee.

*Each state holds a primary or caucus at which time the voters select the preferred candidate. Then each state's party committee sends delegates to the national convention who are committed to voting for the candidate selected by the statewide vote. Some states have a 'winner take all' primary, some states split their delegate votes between candidates.

Thanks Across.

'There's no art in the man.'

That's for sure--everything about this man and his Presidency is ugly as sin.

Today, he is trying to quote Emerson via the NYT..

Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump

“Ralph Waldo Emerson seemed to foresee the lesson of the Senate Impeachment Trial of President Trump. ‘When you strike at the King, Emerson famously said, “you must kill him.’ Mr. Trump’s foes struck at him but did not take him down. A triumphant Mr.Trump emerges from the.....

.....biggest test of his presidency emboldened, ready to claim exoneration, and take his case of grievance, persecution and resentment to the campaign trail.” Peter Baker

Good to see Emerson trending on Twitter though.

All I can say is that this campaign season is going to be UGLY. I mean once we're down to Scrotus/Pence and whoever our nominees are.

I hate it, but I think this is going to be one election where we're going to have to fight fire with fire. Going high when they go low is not going to work, the party already has our votes. It's the 'undecideds' that they're going to have to really convince. And most of those undecideds aren't going to be the people who supported other Dem candidates and have to be convinced now to support 'whoever'. I think they (we) all realize that we cannot sit out the election as a 'protest', like happened in 2016. The 'undecideds' this time are going to, by and large, be people who voted for Scrotus and are now regretting it or the just plain 'aren't sure' voters. I don't think polite discourse, reinforcing our ideals, and turning the other cheek is going to convince them that 'new is good' over 'the devil we know'.

It's really not the Democratic Party's modus operandi to 'get ugly' but they may just have to. Sigh. We may, no WILL, get rid of Scrotus but I'm afraid our Country has undergone a 'sea change', and not into something 'rich and strange'.

Which devil?

Lweji · 16/02/2020 11:06

I think the only way is to demonstrate how the Trump presidency affects each household.
Education
Health
Taxes
Cost of living
The threat of another crisis
Security
The position of the US in the world
Promises vs accomplishments

A problem is that measures to protect the vulnerable will be presented as socialist - the devil.
It shouldn't be presented as a war between us and them. The them will barricade behind the GOP candidate. The deplorables debacle fed into the dicotomy.

It will have to be "if you want this you vote for me", "if you don't want that, you vote for me".

TheNorthWestPawsage · 16/02/2020 18:19

Still trying.

House Uses Trump Impeachment Legal Team’s Arguments in Filing Seeking His Tax Returns

Lweji · 16/02/2020 20:04

On a similar vein, I think, an interesting point:

It's either allowed for Congress to investigate things that are not related to legislation or it's not.
If it is, then the House will be able to continue investigating Trump's alledged crimes regarding tax, etc.
If not, then they won't be able to investigate Biden etc.

cozietoesie · 16/02/2020 23:02

Thanks for your kindness, Across. II'll confess to some fretting over timing, which may well get worse. How Nancy sleeps I don't know.
